Jack Whittaker is an Alaskan bush pilot who lives for the thrill and danger of flying in some of the most inhospitable conditions on Earth. For ten years he developed a reputation as one of the best rescue pilots in the business, saving countless lives, until a disaster made him swear off search and rescue work forever. But everything changed the day Calder walked into his life, beautiful and tough and stubborn as hell, insisting he fly one more rescue mission.
Calder’s ex, Avery, is lost alone on one of the most dangerous mountains in the world after a ski trip goes nightmarishly wrong. As Avery struggles to survive in the bitter Alaskan wilderness, Jack and Calder search for him, both knowing that he is most likely already dead.
Jack tries to treat it as just another rescue mission, but from the moment he set eyes on Calder it has been more than that. His feelings for the other man force him to confront things about himself he has long denied. Their tempestuous relationship only grows more intense as the danger increases, both of them risking their lives in the search for a man Jack is certain will take Calder from him, one way or another.

*** Avery, Dan and their guide become stranded. *** Tough Jack flew his plane on delivery missions now. He'd given up on rescues.
But, along comes red headed Calder, looking for a rescuer to hire for his stranded friends, Avery and Dan. After some arguing, drinking, and stubbornness, Jack agrees. Alaska's weather conditions were extremely cold and dangerous, having one blustery storm after another. I liked the men right away. Each had grit and tenacity, and each needed the other.
This marvelous story/romance, is full of excitement. The men brave the wilderness in search of survivors, sharing heat and sex. Simultaneously we see Avery's struggle, alone, to survive. Jack and Calder are in the midst of their own survival when the plans sinks. A lot is going on as we see the story piece together.
Well written; this thrilling, fictional adventure is great. We learn about survival, a marauding bear, and our men are pretty savvy outdoorsmen. (it's fiction folks)
We read their thoughts, see their conversations, likes and fears exposed, and the slow moving love that develops between Jack and Calder.
A BIG surprise at the end, and a beautiful epilogue. I can see why so many friends have recommended this one. I highly recommend it. ENJOY ! =================
“On Thin Ice” is a real adventure into the remote, dangerous parts of Alaska and the emotional parts of Jack Whittaker that he would rather keep secret. But when Calder came looking for his ex, Avery, the damn sexy Calder had Jack agreeing to go beyond his comfort zone in more ways than one.
Jack wasn’t the only one that needed to come out from hiding, Calder had his own hang-ups as well and it’s Jack that made Calder look within himself for some serious answers. Avery had broken it off with Calder and moved on to another man that Avery loved dearly, Dan. Dan’s a semi-pro skier and was helping Avery break into the ski industry.
Dan and Avery decided to ski down Mount St. Elias, the most dangerous mountain in the world, to get some major corporate sponsors for some ridiculous reasons. Others had tried the same stunt before and died from trying it. During the trek up the mountain something seriously went wrong when the guide came back dazed with severe hypothermia without the other two men and the guide had been in a coma since making it back.
A rescue was attempted by a bush pilot who crashed and was killed. Then all rescue ceased about a week after the pilot was killed. Everyone felt the other two were dead, that was everyone but Calder. Calder knew in his heart that Avery was still alive and all he needed to do was go find him. Jack tried his best to make the pushy, impatient Calder understand that what he asked for was impossible.
After their initial meeting and a night of talking, drinking, and getting drunk, Jack had agreed to something he’d regret in the morning. Jack didn’t think Calder took him seriously when he agreed with the drunken man, but the two ended up flying out in Jack’s old plane, named Ann in search of Avery anyway. Calder really didn’t fully understand the kinds of dangers that could lay ahead for the two of them in the wilderness.
It was also that night a drunk Calder didn’t want to sleep alone on the couch and climb the loft ladder to Jack and it was the beginning for them as Calder curled up with Jack for the night. During their time together the two went through many heated arguments about rescuing Avery and came down to Jack confronting Calder about what Avery really meant to him. The turmoil each man went through started the seed of caring about each other. Emotions were high and intense.
Jerry Cole writes a compelling story of peril, despair, danger and faith of three men as they each in their own way try to survive the freezing temperatures and dangers of the Alaskan wilderness, personal injuries, and depression. I loved all the characters but of course Jack and Calder were my favorites. You cannot go wrong in reading this incredible book. I highly recommend Jerry’s newest book, “On Thin Ice”.

Overall book rating: 4.5 Audio Book: N/A Book Cover: 3.5
Yes. I liked this. I LOVED that we got not only duel point of view from Jack and Calder but also from Avery! I really have to give the author brownie points for that because let’s face it. This book would not have the impact it had if not for the insight into what Avery experienced throughout the story. BRILLIANT!
I have one little snaggly bit to grumble about. I’m not going into it as I absolutely hate it when things are spoiled when people say a little too much so don’t read the “spoiler” if you have not read the book!!! Okay?
I absolutely loved Jack and all his prickly ways. I loved how he was a different kind of character that struggled with who he was inside. Someone complex and ashamed of something that was such a big part of himself with no real reason other than the box he sees society wanting a tuff bush pilot fitting into.
Calder was lovely. But not perfect and that made him special as well. He has so many flaws but he more than makes up for them. And Avery. I swear at some point I was holding my breath for a three way here. I wouldn’t have minded that either but I think everything turned out pretty damn awesome in the end.
This was an amazing book that this author has written. An adventurous love story that is set in Alaska. Jake is a bush pilot with a reputation for being one of the best rescue pilots of his day. Giving up a year prior after something happened. Calder is a omega kind of man. Always leaning on his best friend and ex-boyfriend. Now Avery is with Dan and they on one of the, most dangerous mountains in Alaska to ski down the mountainside.During a snowstorm they are separated and lost. Calder manages to talk Jack to helping him with a rescue mission to try to save Avery, but everyone believes the men are dead. Avery must step up his survival skills learned from his father in order to survive. Calder and Jack face the same challenges as they attempt to find Avery on this dangerous mountain that has storms and high winds that occur without warning. This book brings us adventures, hypothermia, frostbite, possible of limb, starvation, grizzly bears, plane crashes, dangerous ice fields, loyal friends, lust, hot sex, closeted gay, finding ones sexuality, love and a great HEA. Excellent book. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.
Jerry Cole is new to me author, and this is my first book of his. I choose this book because the blurb intrigued me and make me curious.
The story successfully gripping me right from the start. I think at first I'll get boring with all the 'rescuing' things, but I think I was wrong. On the contrary, it IS the long journey of the attempt to rescuing things that was make this story hard to put down.
The tensions and emotions that mingling between Jack and Calder feels so strong in playing reader emotions.
Calder stubbornness on finding his ex, Avery who missing on his way to Mt. Elias climbing with his new love, Dan and how Jack trying to convince him that there's probably no hope to find them alive and the growing feelings between the two also the nearly death experiences they both have really make this book totally worth to read!
I really enjoying this action-adventures-romance story and recommended this book to everyone!
This was a pretty good read this was also my first time reading this author. His feelings for the other man force him to confront things about himself that he has denied. This was a good read with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more from this author
Jack and Calder's story takes you on a wild adventure through the harsh and hostile landscape of Alaska. On a rescue mission to find a lost ex, the two encounter perils waiting for them. On the edge of your seat as you follow their dangerous adventure.
Jerry transports you to the cold snowy environment where you feel everything the characters are going through. It has lots of action as well as lovely tender parts. All the characters are well written and create the atmosphere of the harsh life they live.
I love this book, giving the reader an inkling into the daily lives of people who live in extreme places. I was gripped from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book, a wonderful adventure with a great backdrop and lovely characters.

This was everything I'd ever hope an m/m romance to be. The characters were well-developed. The writing was excellent. Did you just hear that? This has great prose style. Cole used just enough description of just the right type to transport you inside this story. I know: it's hard to believe in this genre.
The story came first. There was tension in every scene, propelling the action forward. The romance came in a close second. There was friction and obstacles and a serious connection formed outside of physical attraction. The sex was a distant third. This is how it should be.
Aspiring m/m romance writers take note. This is how it's done.
I really enjoyed this mostly action-adventure story. It was fun to see Calder manipulate Jack into agreeing to search St. Elias in the beginning. The uncertainty throughout the whole book of whether Calder, Jack, and Avery were going to survive was excellently done - I actually felt uncertain for a good chunk of the story that all three of them would make it. But despite the they'll of that uncertainty, I loved how Jerry added an additional twist to the ending that made everything so much happier for all.
This book must be one of the best Jerry has written. It has a very exiting storyline with lots of suspense. It is also very emotional at times, with disappointments, dispair, selfloathing and of course hope and joy. I found the book very exiting and could not put it down. If you like a nailbiting story, then this book is for you. You will not be disappointed. OMG! I started this book and couldn't put it down. You had me from the beginning. I felt Jack's angst as he wrestled with the internalized homophobia within. Calder also made a strong co-character with his own issues of loss and moving on. Jerry gave such depth to his mc's it lifted them off the pages and made them real. I found myself responding as if I were reading about real people and their lives. Great Job.
This was an exciting story. The author takes his readers into the Alaskan mountains to rescue a man's ex-lover. I found it very detailed and well researched. I liked the main characters. Calder and Jack had chemistry and it showed in their actions towards each other. I loved his story and I think the author keeps getting better and better.
Such a beautiful story I loved how Jack over came is issues with relationships and how he opened himself up to something new where he wasn't hiding anymore Calder loved Avery but he knew he couldn't continue on the path he was on Plus it takes a special kind of person to do what Calder and Jack did for Avery and Dan I just love the story
This was really good. I wasn't expecting to read Avery's POV, but it added depth to the story. He was a really cool character and I think a prequel about him would be good. Calder was a bit immature, therefore he annoyed me a little. I liked Jack. There was one tiny detail that bothered me in the end. Also Overall I enjoyed it, it was a good adventure-love story. Recommended.
i loooooooooooooove this story.. oh man.. the feelings.. the love.. the scenery that is described in such a way i felt as if i was back home... it was wonderfully amazing and perfect.. i am so glad i got to review it
👍 Jerry Cole has done it again! 👏 ON THIN ICE is more proof that Jerry Cole is a very talented writer who knows how to apply his skills to produce well-developed books that readers will really enjoy!
I didn't want this to end. This was a beautiful story. A slow burn I like I like it with a happy ending. I laughed , I cried, I read faster so that I could know what was going to happen. Beautiful story.
Was a great tragity to love story. The regular struggles of one who is afraid to losing the love you thought you wanted to all getting what their true heart desires and didn't know.
This actually took me way longer than necessary to read, because every few chapters I had to stop and play 'The Long Dark' instead, so I too could survive the icy wilderness after a plane crash and fight bears and make fires and try not to die of frostbite.
MM. I wild, roller coaster of a read. Jack and Calder are both in denial over situations in their lives. An emotional read set in the wilderness of Alaska. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Reading this made me feel the cold as I listened to the wind and rain outside and pictured the setting. A good story but still not a place high on my visit list!! 4 stars
This was one of my first reads by Jerry Cole and it got me hooked to the author. It was so well done and the story was amazing. Just enough drama. Loved it
Wow, very nice! Really enjoyed this book. This author's skills are better each time I read one of his books. And the variety of subjects are great! Many authors stick to a formula that varies little, but most all of your reads are very different from each other- (of course with that HEA that I'm looking for ). And good editing which makes or breaks a good book. Thanks Jerry!
I put off reading this for a while now, afraid it wouldn't live up to the reviews and my expectations, but it turned out I had nothing to worry about. It was absolutely amazing. Beautifully written, exciting and tender at the same time with well written and relateable characters. It is instantly on my favourites list. And oh my god, I read that there was a twist at the end, but I honestly wasn't expecting that one. Not sure how to feel about it, but it was manageable.
All in all, anyone who had the same doubts as me, fear not and read this now. It's well worth it.
