Valera longs to escape her sheltered life and overbearing mother. She just never imagines that her opportunity would arrive after being kidnapped. Now she has a decision to make: face a world filled with danger and discover her own power, or return home where it's safe and live in a gilded cage.

Escape Aether is the second novel in The Trinity Key Trilogy by L.M. Fry and allows readers to explore the world of Aetherland even more as Fry continues to develop her exhilarating series.
Picking up where the first novel left off, Escape Aether sees Valera Stein kidnapped by the recently discovered Aetherland-born Julia who is desperately seeking her part of the Trinity Key. Agreeing to help Julia find her missing piece allows Valera to do the one thing she’s always wanted; escape Aetherland Isle and see the world. Yet as Valera and Julia journey through both Aetherland and the human world, enemies change and dangers increase until both girls must decide to work together if they have any hope of finding Julia’s piece of the key.
Having enjoyed Into Aether, I found Escape Aether to be a fantastically written and wonderful follow up to its predecessor. Escape Aether explored different parts of Aetherland and allowed us to discover new areas of L.M. Fry’s dashing steampunk world, as well as get to know new characters.
Unlike Into Aether which took place through Theo’s eyes alone, Escape Aether unfolds through the varying POV’s of Valeria, Theo and Julia, allowing readers to follow all three of Danu’s daughters and members of the Trinity throughout the book. The back and forth POV’s really do allow you to get to know all three girls and learn of their hopes, fears and motives as the story unfolds. Nothing and no one is completely black and white as we come to learn, especially Julia.
I really enjoyed getting to know Valera and Julia in this book. I knew I was going to like Valera and she doesn’t disappoint—she’s just a happy, sweet person, plain and simple, although L.M Fry certainly takes her on an emotional journey with Escape Aether. While Julia on the other hand surprised me; she really was just misunderstood—someone who had grown up simply wanting her father’s love and someone who was willing to do anything is wanted in order to facilitate that. Julia isn’t really a bad person. She just needs someone to genuinely care for her and I think Theo and Valera can be those people if given the chance.
Mixing all the characters from the first novel—Theo, Victor, Nessie, Vivi, Valera and more---with new and exciting additions—most notably Gideon as a love interest for Valera, Escape Aether is a fast paced and adventurous sequel that highly entertains and leaves me ready to read the next book in the series!

The last member of the Trinity is now known, but will she join her sisters to fulfill their ultimate purpose or will she continue on her father's footsteps? With Julia wanting nothing more than hold her piece of the Trinity Key to unleash her dormant powers and take her place as one of Danu's daughters many challenges swing her way. Meanwhile, Valera also part of the Trinity, is shocked with the reality of being outside Aetherland Isle (Where she has been her whole life) and finds herself not wanting to go back home but venturing the world free of her family, will Valera be able to follow her own desire or will she forfeit the little freedom she got and go back home to Theo and her family?
Excellent sequel to "Into Aether" this book is a page turner and I just love how the story line becomes more interesting and dense by each chapter!
In this sequel there is a lot more "magic" and a lot of character development, I was really surprised by this as characters undertook more serious roles in the story, while this is good there is a downside which is leaving out some other characters (I was really hoping to see more of Vivi, I'll just have to wait to read the third book).
The story is awesomely good! The pacing is fast and a lot happened in the book but its easy to keep up and very entertaining, I loved the first book and this one is no exception!.
Note: I received a digital copy courtesy of the author, thank you!
This series just keeps getting better and better! I really enjoyed the first book, INTO AETHER, so when I was offered the opportunity to read the rest of the series by the author, I couldn't resist. And I am sure glad that I didn't.
In ESCAPE AETHER, we are given the opportunity to really get to know the second of the Trinity, Valera, as well as meeting the third, Julia. Valera feels smothered at home as her mother tends to be overbearing and has rather firm ideas on just how a young lady should behave. She had dreamed of visiting the human world though nothing is quite like we dream.
I really enjoyed watching Valera discover herself and her strengths as well as getting the chance to meet Julia. Both girls grow and learn quite a bit about themselves and each other. We also get the chance to revisit Theo as she faces the music back at her new home.
ESCAPE AETHER is a great coming of age story set in world of airships and automations with danger lurking about every corner. Perfect for all ages, this story will capture your imagination and hold it until the very end.
What an amazing 2nd book of the Trinity Key Trilogy!!
This book starts off right where Into Aether (review here) leaves off….Valera being shoved off the airship platform after being kidnapped by Julia. Julia kidnapped Valera because she believes that Valera can help her merge the rest of the Trinity Key. After saving Valera, they head straight away to Subterria where Julia believes that her father had kept her part of the Trinity Key. Unfortunately, Subterria is in the middle of a civil war (caused when Lazarus, Julia’s father, attacked Harmony’s Circus and Harem of the Horrific. While they are there, they meet up with Marcus Corvus, Valera’s step uncle, who was even more evil than I remembered in the first book. It is in Subterria that Valera starts harnessing aether and discovers that she can use/control heat (like shooting fireballs out of her hand or making herself so hot that no one can touch her).
Then the book shifts to Theo, who is still in Aetherland with her mother, father (yes father!!!), Victor, Vivi, Nessie and Victoria. Theo had discovered that she can cause storms and control lighting. She can also speak to Valera in her mind but that link has been muted for some reason. The only reason that she knows Valera is alive is that she can still draw on aether. If Valera was dead, then she wouldn’t be able to draw on it. She makes the decision, with Victor and Nessie, that she is going back to Subterria to get Valera back. They get to Subterria very shortly after Julia, Gideon and Valera but get held up after Theo is attacked by Rufus Corvus (Marcus’s brother and part of the triplet set). She is saved from him (and well, he was pushed to his death) by Victor and Benji, the strong man of Harmony’s circus. His death was awful. I had dreams of being crushed beneath gears for a few nights after I finished the book.
While they are there, they find out that Valera is willingly with Julia and that upsets both Theo and Victor. Valera does apologize to Theo, kinda gives an explanation and she wants Theo to tell her family that she loves them.
I’m sorry Theo. This is something I have to do. Tell my family that I love them.
They also find Titus, Victor and Valera’s stepfather, in the dungeon and decide to take him home to Victoria. When they arrive home, they are met by members of the Elder’s guard, which Theo takes out with aether. After she is taken into custody, she is charged, by the Elders of Aether, with heresy and treason. All because her and Valera combined their two keys.
On the Julia and Valera front, things aren’t going as well. After finding out that her father didn’t have the key in Subterria, Julia decides to head to Boulder, Colorado (where she pretended to be human to get to Theo) to look for a town called Goldsville to look for her father’s vault. She decides to take Valera out in the human world and it backfired on her. A trio of boys from the first book find them in a coffee shop and they, well, they piss her off and she firebombs the main boy’s car….lol. Whoops. While they were out on their adventure, Marcus find Goldsville and where he thinks the vault might be…Azure Springs. So they head off to there.
Not going to go much into the book after this point but I will say there is so much packed into the last half of the book, that it was hard for me to put down. Also, to see Julia and Valera’s personal transformations during the book was awesome.
I really had started off the book not liking Julia but as the book went on and you read more and more about her life, I started to feel bad for her. Let’s just say that she had it rough.
Valera had been hidden from the world by an overprotective mother and it showed in the beginning of the book. But, by the time Marcus came into the story, she was starting to develop a backbone and her interactions with Marcus just made her stronger.
The ending was not what I expected but it was very good. Not everything gets resolved and, actually, there are even more problems. I can’t wait to read the next book and see how the trilogy ends!!
How many stars will I give Escape Aether? 4
Why? A well written steam punk/dystopia/fantasy. Very vividly written with great world building, this is a series that stays with you even after you are done reading it.
Will I reread? Yes
Will I recommend to family and friends? Yes
Age range: Teen
Why: Very clean. No sex (just a few kissing scenes with Theo and Victor). Mild violence and no language.
**I received a free copy of this book and volunteered to review it**
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the author for allowing me the opportunity to continue reading this entertaining series!
Escape Aether is the second book in The Trinity Key Trilogy. Readers should definitely read the first installment before picking this one up. This is the continuing steampunk fantasy adventures of Theo, Valera, and Julia, the three young women who are part of the Trinity. It's not every day I comes across a series where the second book is better than the first. This story primarily focused on Valera, the girl who has lived her entire life in Aetherland Isle with her overprotective mother, and Julia, the girl with a tortured past who you're not really sure about what her intentions truly are. There's a lot of character development with Julia and Valera. The world building just keeps going as readers get deeper into the series. It's apparent to me that the author really took the time to plan out the whole world this series takes place in, and not just in terms of geography but the types of people as well. There's a little bit of romance, but it doesn't overpower the story, which I appreciate as a reader. By the end of the book, the three girls are brought together and are just beginning to understand how their union affects their powers. They're also just beginning to understand the consequences of their actions. This introduces a good foundation for the third book in the series, which I am very much looking forward to reading.
First of all I would like to thank L.M.Fry for sending me the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Escape Aether is the second book in the Trinity Key Trilogy and although it could be read on its own I think it definitely works best if it is read as it was intended. For teenage fans of Steampunk I would definitely recommend this trilogy. This book primarily focuses on Valera. Ever since Theo came into her life Valera has been feeling confined by her overbearing mother and her sheltered upbringing on Aetherland. When she is kidnapped Valera must make a choice between the safety and confines of her old life or her new powers and the dangers that come along with them. This is a continuation of the story. I thought the first book ended in a bad spot. Book 2 picks up right where the first one ended, with the three members of the trinity key being separated. I thought the book started slow, but it picked up speed as it went and I'm glad I stuck with it. It gets pretty exciting along the way. It ends with a cliff-hanger so I may get the third book to find out about the ending. The only thing I really hated about the book was the F-bomb. SO inappropriate for a YA novel. It wasn't necessary and added nothing to the story. For that reason, I can't recommend it to others.
