Author Jeffrey Johnson begins The Pursuit of Glory with this 'You and I are looking for something. Though we may not know exactly what it is, we continue to search for it. What is it? It is glory.' Explaining this pursuit as part of our human condition, the author considers the ways we try to fill that empty place in our hearts through happiness, purpose, freedom, companionship, truth, peace, holiness, and life. He shows us, from Scripture and personal experiences, why and how we will ultimately find satisfaction when our search leads us to the glory of God. Each chapter includes questions for further thought, making this an engaging and useful book both for individuals and groups. Table of 1. The Pursuit of Glory 2. The Pursuit of Happiness 3. This should be the new standard on Christian living books.
Jeffrey Johnson does a terrific job of taking the reader through various things we pursue by virtue of the fact that we were made in God's image, the way we go about pursuing those things wrongly because of our depravity, and the way we can pursue those things rightly in Christ.
The topics (chapters) he covers are:
The Pursuit of Glory The Pursuit of Happiness The Pursuit of Purpose The Pursuit of Freedom The Pursuit of Companionship The Pursuit of Truth The Pursuit of Peace The Pursuit of Holiness The Pursuit of Life
I highly recommend it for believers. And it could actually even be used as a great evangelistic tool to give to non-Christian friends/neighbors.
It’s a good, little book on why, what, and how we pursue glory. Created in the image of a glorious God, we intrinsically seek glory. We mistakenly think it’s ours that we need, which leads to sin and misery. What we truly hunger for and need is more of God’s glory and that is found through Jesus Christ.
This was very surface level in my opinion. Each chapter explored something that we pursue as limited humans—purpose, glory, happiness, etc. The idea behind each chapter was great, but it felt as if they each needed their own book to fully explore them. Aside from that, this book was very poorly edited, and did not seem very well thought through.
Gentle, approachable for all Christian readers. It helps us evaluate ourselves in light of what we are called to as Christians. Jeffrey Johnson reorients us from a life of complacency unto the pursuit of glory, happiness, labor, etc. .. I've enjoyed this book. I will purchase and hand to my young adult children.
A simple book that analyses the different pursuits (glory, happiness, purpose, freedom, companionship, truth, peace, holiness, and life) that every human has, and shows how their fulfillment is only found in Christ. This is helpful in seeing how these God given desires have been twisted by man because of sin, and the need for faith and God's grace to redirect them to Christ.
