More than anything, Pat the bat wanted to be special. He wanted to be different. He wanted to be a super-hero! Making himself a super-hero costume one day while his friends slept, he declared that he was Superbat. But what special skills and powers did he have, his friends wondered? Everything he could do, from flying to echolocation, was something they too could do. Then, in the process of rescuing a mouse family under threat from a cat, Pat displayed an important quality that all heroes (super or otherwise) should have... courage.
An engaging picture-book adventure from British author/artist Matt Carr, Superbat taps into the childhood fascination with both bats and superheroes. It's sort of a cross between the classic Stellaluna and such titles as Superhero Instruction Manual. The colorful artwork, with its bold design and cartoon-style layout, reminded me a bit of the work of Bob Shea, and is well-matched to the text. All in all, a fun addition to the growing body of picture-books about the concept of superheroes, and the young people who long to become such heroes.
If you want a super cute book about a bat who wants to be a superhero which also talks about bats and bat facts, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!!! My boss and I were fawning over how cute it was.
This book was so much fun!!!! The book teaches about what bats can do. The story shows how one little bat who wanted to be a super hero, and was not any different than the other bats did something heroic that made him stand out and be admired and respected by his peers. There is a good teaching moment in this book. Then for a simple craft at the end the children can decorate their own superbat.
Loads of kid appeal in this high-action, super-colorful story rendered in Day-Glo colors. Plus, its always fun to see bats as the good guys in a story!
Pat the bat is bored. He wants to do something exciting and special. Like a superhero! He sews himself a suit and when all his bat friends see it, the tease him because all of the super powers he says he has (echolocation, flying, super hearing) are what all of the bats can do. Just as he is about to give up his grand idea, he hears a call for help from across town. He rushes to the scene and finds a cat about to eat a family of mice. Once he scares the cat away he realizes he does have a super power: courage.
This is a really cute idea for a book. I thought there was too much time spent on the things that Pat could do that were the same as everyone else, so the story lagged a little for me, but the final concept of courage being a super hero, was a worthwhile highlight.
1. No awards 2. Kindergarten 3. Pat the bat does not feel like he stands out among the other bats in the cave, so he makes himself a superhero costume so that he can be a SuperBat. However, his bat friends make fun of him and tell Pat that the only 'super powers' that he has are the traits that all bats have. Once saving a family of mice from a mean cat, the bats realize that Pat's true superhero power is his courage. 4. This book reminds the reader that all people have their own, unique super powers. I like how Pat the bat does not listen to the other bats who are trying to convince him that he is not special. Pat displays an important message to the reader 5. There are many rhyming words in this book that can be incorporated into an activity which teaches rhymes to the students. In addition to this, the book also provides facts about bats, meaning that a lesson plan can be made that revolves around teaching students about bats before and after reading the book.
This book is a beautiful tribute to Comic Books, Superheroes, the innate desire to be helpful and of course, BATS!
Gorgeous colour palette of BOLD primary colours with the onomatopoeia comic book style vocal bubbles Thwack/ Kapow/ Bam etc
There is a page where the Bat is up late ‘at 1 0’clock in the afternoon’ and he is making a superhero costume drinking tea and this just cracked me up. I want to live in this world please.
The book then goes on to list all the ‘superpowers’ that Pat the Bat has, but are actually just really awesome typical Bat powers. (Absolute top notch way of slipping informative knowledge into a story!) Then his REAL superpower; courage, shows up and saves the day, well, night.
Highly recommend to all in need of a giggle, lovers of Bats and their awesomeness and/ or need a reminder that we are all superheroes when we help those in need.
The book Superbat is about Pat, a bat who is bored of their life. As a result of this boredom, Pat sets off to become a superhero. When trying to determine exactly what Pat’s superhero powers are, they realize all of their bat companions can also do the same things Pat can. Feeling discouraged, Pat plans on giving up, but at that moment hears a cry of distress. Pat flys to the rescue and displays courage. The other bats, as well as the victims, all applaud Pat for saving the day and they explain that Pat’s powers are courage!
This book is a wonderful way to show children that they all have unique powers. While other children may also display the same talents and attributes your child does, it still shows they are capable of great things, even with similar abilities! Wonderful book and I would recommend to families with young children and teachers.
Pat the Bat wants to be special like the superheroes in his comic books, so he makes himself a costume. But all the superpowers that he can think of are ordinary bat abilities like flying and echolocation. After being laughed at by his friends, he dejectedly returns home. That's why he hears a cry for help with his super hearing and rushes to the aid of a mouse family about to be dinner. After he dive bombs the cat and scares him away, Pat discovers that his super power is courage. And he felt special after all.
This is a fun little book featuring one of my favorite mammals. It stresses the idea that there are many important qualities that aren't flashy such as courage and being willing to help others.
“HELP!” That was me while reading this book. Although this was meant to be a mouse yelling for its life, this was me. This book was about a crazy bat who thought it needed to be a superhero. This bat’s name is Pat. Pat was bored with hanging around in the cave. So she started thinking about things she could do that were special. She would mention these things to her friends and they would tease her and say that they could do it too. She wanted to make a difference in the world so she rescued a family of mice. I would recommend this book to no one. This book left me in need of a REAL superhero. Giovanna P. Age 12, Connecticut/Western Massachusetts
This book was so cute. The drawings, the comic book-like effects, the heartwarming ending?? I loved it.
While offering facts about bats, it simultaneously provides a fun plot with which children can identify--a bat who's seemingly normal in comparison to his companions, but special when he perseveres and shows a great deal of courage. I definitely expect to see this book make its rounds in the elementary school where I volunteer--I just know that all of the students there will love this book!
{My thoughts} – This book is simple yet entertaining. Super Bat is the story of a regular bat that wanted to be something more. He accomplished this by making a superhero costume and being the superhero he’d always wanted to be. The words on each patch match up nicely with the illustrations.
I highly recommend this book for any young child struggling to find their place in this world. It helps to show them that they don’t have to be like everyone else and that it’s okay to be different. I look forward to sharing and reading this book with my daughter in the future.
A cute, if a bit trite, book that delivers the message that we are all super and incredible, even if we seem like everyone else. Courage is a superpower. I don’t want to be too critical because I don’t really expect a children’s book to be able to deliver a message with more nuance given the limitations of the format, but I will say it didn’t strike me as an exceptional way to present the message. It is an important message, nonetheless, and it’s always fun to teach children about different animals.
Very simple and cute (I love books where bats are cute rather than SCARY, because they're just, like, flying mice and have no desire to suck your blood). A little bat wants to use his bat senses to be a super hero (super hearing, flight, etc) but his bat friends just laugh because those are things that all bats can already do, and doesn't make him special. I might consider this for a storytime in October if I wanted to talk about "scary animals".
I read this with Mister, and we cheered for Superbat and his unusual superpowers. Mister was feeling a bit smart because he knew about bats and echolocation, and being nocturnal, and all the other things the book mentioned (yeah science!). We read through the facts together in the back of the book, and he kept saying, "I knew that. I knew that." What can I say? We like bat books.
The eq in this book is terrific as are the bright, bold pictures. I'm saving this one to try it for a storytime.
Bat wants to be a superhero. So he sews himself a costume. But his friends point out that all the superpowers he lists are things they can do too. He thinks he's just a bat in a funny costume. Then he saves a family of mice from a cat, and his friends applaud, pointing out he does have a superpower: courage.
do you know how many picture books I just tried to read between just now and my last review.... storytime prep is the fuckin worst.
thank god this book was cute!! the illustrations are great and lil Pat is so evocative. you really do feel for him, and if I can say that with my heart of ice then you will certainly enjoy this!
I love bats!!! I think they're very cute and they're so, so, soft. They also suffer from an unearned reputation. Any book that gets kids to start with the right information is wonderful to me. And let's not forget that the illustrations are just as cute as Superbat.
Cute book with very basic bat facts. Probably good for kids who need entertained with their bedtime stories or to launch a conversation about researching bats.
Overall message is you can have the same abilities as others; how you use those abilities determines whether or not you're a hero.
Pat, an ordinary bat, wants to be just like the superheroes in his favorite comics. This is a very funny book, and I like the nod towards the Batman comics. It also includes a few real facts about bats, like they have echolocation and super hearing.
My husband is a superhero expert. (And, that is not sarcastic or over exaggerating.) Anyway, I was hesitant but excited to read it. This book was so clever. It made me laugh. It taught us things at the same time. What a hard and wonderful balance. Highly recommend.
A cute comic book like story about a bat who just wants to be a superhero. Her friends all tease her and tell her that she is no different from them, but when it comes down to it, she is brave and strong.
