Yasmin is destroyed by the unexpected visits.
Well, I can definitely say that I don't know WHAT to say about this book. The reason? I found this title in a Christian Romance group on Facebook. But what I read definitely wasn't a Christian Romance. This is best described as a dark romance with cheating going on among a group of church leaders. And if you're a true Christian then you already know that cheating is anything but Christ like. Especially among church leaders.
And if sleeping around with other people wasn't disturbing enough, the Pastor (Sidney Teal), his wife (Olivia), and other faithful church attenders (Yasmin and Amber-Rose) used profanity in their conversations. But to the author's defense, I understand that this is only fiction AND if a pastor is going to cheat, well, I guess profanity goes along with his true character.
One thing I would like to say about this book is that the author definitely stuck to writing what was on her heart, and as an author I respect that. If De Coster truly thought she was crafting a Christian Romance, she left the 'safe/clean writing zone' that this genre normally calls for. De Coster put her words out there for the world to read despite any potential criticism. This is the reason I gave this title three stars instead of two.
The ending was very abrupt. Too bad it didn't include a repentance scene from each character where we could see each person go before the Lord and repent of their sins. We could see a wonderful moment of re dedication no matter how their lives turned out after their 'screw-ups'.
After all, the road to Jesus Christ is never pretty, clean and smooth. It's ugly, full of heartbreak and destruction. We get forgiveness for EVERYTHING and this is what makes our savior, Jesus Christ SO powerful!
The last point I'd like to make is the 'brand name' dropping. At times I was pulled out of the story when the characters would shop for clothes...the constant reminders of Jimmy Choo shoes or Ralph Lauren polo shirts. LOL I suppose the author likes brand name clothes. But yes, I'll probably check out De Coster's other titles anyway.
Our society's idea of marriage comes in many different forms nowadays. The one thing that is constant is you BOTH have agreed to forsake all others ~ but do we really know what that phrase means? Forsaking all others means of course being with only your spouse but in addition to that it also means putting your marriage and your spouse above everything else, except God of course. When you start to put things in front of your marriage you lose sight of the real purpose, to love and honor them forever. Were you being truthful when you entered into this agreement or were you being selfish?
Pastor Sidney Teal is the pastor and founder of Holy Word Holiness Church. He has a beautiful wife, Olivia and three beautiful children and a very successful church. They have worked hard at keeping up appearances but something has been feeling off in their marriage as of late. Could it be that Pastor Teal is spending so much time at the church he is losing his connection with his wife or is there something else underlying? Being a pastor should he just have the upper hand on relationships or should just being human like the rest of us come into play?
When The Vows Break is an intense novel. I went through many emotions while reading and at one point had to stop reading to prevent from crying. You are so drawn into the story line that you almost forget that you are reading a book, it feels more like a lifetime movie or a major motion picture. You are so in tune with the characters and they are so relatable that you feel their turmoil. The writing in this novel just flows and keeps you right in the mix of the story and you are almost relieved when it is over so that you can finally stop holding your breath. I always enjoy DeCoster's novels and this one is no different, as usual I look forward to more! Great job!
This book was really good. It was about a pastor who was preaching one thing and doing the other. Pastor Teal was cheating on his wife with Yasmin for 3 years. She went on all the church trip with him. Her best friend April Rose gold her to stop interfering with pastors married life. So they set Yasmin up with Ambrose April Rose fiance Ronnies cousin. Ambrose plan a surprise trip to see Yasmjn only to hear Pastor Teal and Yasmin in a loud shouting argument . Ambrose found out about Pastor Teal and Yasmin love affair it out him back in a realm of what he previously went through, so he left Yamin. She found she is pregnant by Pastor get lawyer drawn up papers that Pastor will accept baby and she will get to know her siblings . . Love it. First I read by this author and I know I will read more
I was livid reading this book. I felt in the very beginning, once he started to describe her, that he wanted her. I don't understand how we as people forget, Pastors are human too. But, that gives them no excuse to dishonor their vows and stand in front of the very congregation and preach what they want uphold.
The women like Yasmin should be called out. She knew from the beginning he was married and chose to lay with this man for 3 years help in him in deceiving his wife.
I have zero tolerance for infidelity. If I can work hard in honoring our vows, so can he. I'm happy Olivia thought worthy of herself, to know she deserved more.
Pastors should practice what they preach. Unfortunately, Pastor Teal thought this didn't apply to him. He missed the signs that God gave him and had to reap what he sowed. Even though Yas shared the blame, she eventually came around so I had hoped that she would have a better fate. Hopefully, lessons learned all around. I'm not sure what my reaction would be in this situation if I were in Olivia's shoes as the faithful, dedicated, wife mother and first lady. This book speaks reality and consequences and was well written. Highly recommended.
Overall, I thought this book was OK. This is the first I’ve read by this author, and the message itself is good that when we do things such as this that are since find us out. However, what took away from the message for me where the swearwords. As a Christian fiction reader (if that’s what this is supposed to be) that was disappointing to me. It read more like a typical adult romance book, that’s why the 3-star rating.
An excellent storyline that grasps your attention, the details are very relevant to these times. Character development written in a way to help you relate to them. You will feel happiness, compassion and at some points even anger. This book is not bashing Pastors, but pointing out real facts. Not saying that all Pastors behave this way, but they are human first. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I recommend this five star read to all who enjoy reading a good story.
This book was crazy. Church people are the worst ones. It began with Sidney lecturing his friend about cheating and he ends up doing the same thing. Olivia was not to be played with either!! I hate that Yasmin didn't find some love. Karma came back around and didnt miss!
This story was enjoyable. When the cows break, it's hard to reconcile sometimes but I'm glad it didn't with Sidney and Olivia. I just wished Ambrose would have given Yasmine a second chance of wishful thinking but yes they're plenty of pastor who prey on the weak. Job well done!
This was just an OK read for me. Wasn’t fond of the subject matter and the way it was told left no room sympathy/empathy for any of the characters with back history of why the situations occurred. Yasmin was just wrong all the way around!!
I did not think this Pastor got a pass. I think his behavior was deplorable. Olivia was correct to leave her cheating husband. The Pastor needed to be brought down a peg....
Tsk tsk tsk. Typical church novel. This is the first time the preacher cheats, mistress gets pregnant, wife finds out & leaves. I do not blame Ambrose for leaving & not looking back. Yasmin should’ve told him the truth from the beginning. In the end everybody got what they deserved.
Yasmine Lewis found out too late that what she was doing was ungodly. She lost Ambrose because of past indiscretions. Sylvester and Sidney also lost because they did the unthinkable.
This book was extremely relevant to a lot of marriages today. One thing that people need to understand is that there is always an opportunity that presents itself; allowing one to do the right thing before everything falls apart. Great read!!!
This story was so realistic I feel like I know these people. Sidney and Yazmin were both selfish and wrong, they both got what they deserved. Off to find other books my this author, another one added to my favorites list!
Good story line.. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is real today in our churches. Many older saints feel you should stay despite the infidelity. I'm glad to see it was addressed in the plot.
This was a very interesting story. There were some things that I wanted to see happen but didn’t. A few things I felt was left undone but it really wasn’t. She closed it all. Good read.
This book was good! I’m glad the author showed that no matter what your religion is people will still cheat. I’m glad that Pastor Teal had to pay for his actions. Yasmin owned her mistake and lost a good man in the process.
