With a title worthy of a slasher film, this one is unlike any Fear Street book I've ever read. Taut and tightly-paced, the sense of panic is palpable. Imagine being disgraced and never getting accepted to any reputable college again, all because a close friend plans to turn you in for something you all participated in, due to a belated attack of conscience. Think of your future, all of that golden potential going to waste because of one disloyal, holier-than-thou snitch. Makes your trigger finger itch, right?

And when it seems like a (crappy, criminal) solution is just within reach, an even more voracious beast rears its ugly head. One by one, your circle's bright futures get snuffed, this time for good. Yup, your victim has turned the tables against you.

All of this because you had to cheat, because even if you had the brains to perform well in a college prep test, you just had to make sure smh. You always knew that Karma reaps its dividends sooner or later, just not that it would be using Death's sickle to collect.

At just 128 pages this book is packed, a nightmare plunge that you can ride in one sitting. It doesn't give you time to pause and think, and you only get to catch your breath when everything's finally explained. And it was all going so beautifully - right until the climax. That freaking resolution was such a cop out. Ugh. What a letdown.

If this book succeeded in one thing, it's in rekindling my interest in retro YA horror. Just as one can see a tornado barreling towards him from a distance, methinks I'll be succumbing to another phase yet again, and soon.

In any case, I'm rating it 6.5/10 or 3 stars out of 5.

Scream Jennifer,Scream from the New Fear Street book series is a book I was really excited  to read.Ive heard this book was really good and recently learned this book was an inspiration for a Fear Street movie back in the day from a fellow YouTuber named Goosebumps Completionest. This was also a buddy read,so im thankful for that. The story stars six friends Shelli,Del,Danny,Mayra,Liam and last but certainly not least Jennifer. We start the book with the kids hanging around talking about this prep test thing that they took. This test means alot to them as it is a certified way to get into a good college. We learn that the kids cheated on this test by buying the answers on the internet.Jennifer feels very guilty and states she is going to confess about cheating on the test. All of the kids try to talk her out of it but she has none of it.Jennifer ends up leaving and the kids are super mad because this is going to interfere with their future so they come up with a plan. This plan is the only logical way for characters in Fear Street to do and that's kill Jennifer.Shelli doesn't want to do this because Jennifer has been her best friend since kindergarten. She even has a necklace that she got from Jennifer that she always wears. But Shelli is pretty much blackmailed into doing this. They end up making it fair though by cutting a piece of paper with numbers on it and the one that gets the highest number is the killer.Danny is the lucky winner and gets to decide a way to kill her which is running her over in a parking lot.The night of the kill though something  happens. And it's simply awesome.I don't want to give it away because it is a major character that this happens too.But I'll reveal this Jennifer is still alive and one by one these characters go after jennifer only to fail. This book was really simple with a very good structure. This book was ridiculously  gory. The scene with the glass in the eye will stick with me for a long time. There is also mentions of suicide which is very dark.I had a lot of fun with Scream Jennifer, Scream. If I had one complaint,it would be close to the ending, shelli doesn't mention she was basically blackmailed to do this. Its just kind of skimmed over. Also I predicted something at the end but obvious isn't a bad thing here.I give Scream Jennifer,Scream a perfect five out of five stars.

I scream, you scream, we all scream.

If your friend declares she’s going to rat you out for cheating on an exam, your immediate response probably shouldn’t be PLOTTING HER MURDER (I’m looking at you Liam, you psychopath).

Everyone gets what they deserve here and it is GRISLY. I was not expecting gore or that twist at the end, so that was a fun surprise.

Very quick read with plenty of swift deaths.

I didn’t expect much from this book because I was only looking for a light read to brush up on my Dutch. Surprisingly, it was really thrilling and difficult to put down. Sort of like a supernatural, YA horror, Secret History dupe. It’s all a bit silly!! The good kind of silly.

3.5 stars :)

Moral of the Story: It's easier just to study hard for an exam than to plot killing your closest friend because she is going to snitch on you.

Body Count: 4, Danny, Mayra, Liam and...

The Usual Suspect(s): Jennifer

The Actual Suspect(s): Jennifer

Tagline: Getting into college can be murder...

Plot: Jennifer, Mayra, Liam, Danny, Del, and Shelli have all cheated on their College Placement Exam. Most of them have good grades, but they are all under a lot of pressure to attend only the finest of institutions. No community college for any of them!! One of them has a conscience, however, and regrets their decision to cheat. She tells everyone that she is going to report them as soon as she can. She just feels awful about what they did and cannot get over it. Look out, Jennifer!

Everyone immediately gangs up on Jennifer. She flees the house party in distress. Shelli is Jennifer's best friend, and she tells everyone that once her mind is made up about something then she isn't going to change it. They all fear the worst for their futures. Danny suggests that they kill her and make it look like an accident. If she really isn't going to change her mind about snitching then it is the only option they have. The boys all muse that it can't be THAT hard. They all have the smarts. This coming from a group of cheaters, mind you.

Danny's brilliant plan is to hold a lottery to see who will kill Jennifer since they can't all do it at once. Whoever gets the highest number has to do the dirty work. It comes down to Shelli and Danny. Danny draws a 5. He must kill Jennifer. Since they used to date, he knows her schedule and where she works. His plan is to run her over the following night. He tells them if anyone else is around he'll just give up on his plan.

Tensions are high the next night at Shelli's house. Everyone is sitting around waiting for Danny to come home. By 10:30 he's still a no-show. They decide to drive down to where Jennifer works to find out what's going on. The scene that awaits them is not pretty. They see Danny's car crashed into a light pole. When the police pry open the driver's seat a bunch of Danny's blood comes gushing out. Danny has a glass shard through one of his eyes, which I thought was a nice touch.

Talking to the police is, lo and behold, Jennifer! She's alive and well, though Shelli notices blood on her jacket. Hmm... Jennifer stares at everyone with cold and lifeless eyes, but none of them talk to her. The remaining four head home and discuss what to do. Jennifer is still alive, and they are all still concerned that she will tattle. Shelli wants them to quit talk about murdering Jennifer. She never wanted this to happen. Del volunteers to try and talk some sense into Jennifer the next day at school.

While Mayra, Liam, and Shelli wait for Del the next day, they start to notice some commotion on the upper floor of Shadyside. Before they can react, they see something come crashing through one of the upper windows and land with a sickening splat on the ground. Shelli just knows that it's Del. He has broken most every bone in his body, but the doctors tell the remaining three that he is in stable condition. He won't die.

Jennifer pays her remaining "friends" a visit the next night. She sneers at them and glares at them with dead eyes. She tells them that SHE killed Danny and pushed Del out of the window. She tells them that she has to kill each one of them since they tried to kill her. Then she leaves. Shelli chases after her to no avail.

Liam STILL thinks it's a good idea to keep trying to kill Jennifer. Shelli thinks he's crazy. So do I. They hold the lottery again, and meek Mayra is the winner. She has to kill Jennifer the next day. She's a nervous wreck, though, and she knows she can't do it alone. Shelli and Liam agree to be available as back-up. The plan is for Mayra to tell Jennifer that she wants to speak to her and let her know that she agrees about the test. She wants to set things right. They will meet an old bridge that is abandoned during the winter. Liam tells Mayra she has to push Jennifer off the bridge.

Jennifer agrees to meet Mayra. As Liam and Shelli approach the bridge the next day, they see a bunch of flashing lights. Mayra hasn't appeared yet, but they figure she must have succeeded in pushing Jennifer off the bridge. Shelli asks a cop for the name of the person who died. He tells her it was Mayra Simone.

That night, Shelli is at home drinking cocoa to calm her nerves and watching the news to find out more about Mayra's death. She is shocked to hear the death has been ruled as a suicide. A note posted to Mayra's mirror at home flashes up on the screen: "I feel so guilty about cheating on the test. I couldn't take it anymore." Shelli is shocked.

Liam's twisted brain tells him that he and Shelli are still not safe until Jennifer is dead. Shelli is sick of all this tragedy. Liam vows he's still going to get Jennifer, and Shelli realizes that she has to stop him before he dies too. She now believes what Jennifer said about killing them all one by one. That night she goes over to Liam's house, but he isn't there. She calls him on a gigantic old-school cell phone but gets no answer. She goes over to Jennifer's house and her parents tell Shelli that Jennifer is working on set construction for the play at school. Shelli rushes to Shadyside High and hopes that she isn't too late.

The creepiest death yet is awaiting her. When she gets to the auditorium and flicks on the huge lever that lights up the stage, she is greeted by Liam's dead form rocking back and forth on a rope that Jennifer used to hang him. Shelli goes to take him down, but she can't bring herself to touch him in this condition. I cannot blame her. I couldn't do it either. Hanging is one of the most gruesome and creepiest ways to die. Have you seen The Virgin Suicides?

She finally runs into Jennifer at the bottom of the stairs. Jennifer admits that she DID kill Danny, Mayra, and Liam. Then she reveals something else too: that's it's not that hard to kill the ones who have killed you. And she won't stop until Del and Shelli are dead.

Yes, Jennifer is a ghost. She DID die that day that Danny ran her over. That's why there was blood on her jacket. But she couldn't fully perish because she had unfinished business with her "friends." So she begins to chase Shelli around the theater. Jennifer lets Shelli fumble around in the dark for a while before turning the lights back on. Then she goes to strangle Shelli...

...Only to find that she can't. Her fingers touch Shelli's heart pendant, the one that Jennifer made for her when they were kids. Shelli never took it off, not even when the others talked about killing Jennifer. Shelli never wanted her to die. She still wishes that Jennifer wasn't dead. Jennifer is conflicted. She wants Shelli to pay. She MUST pay. She tries to keep strangling her but is unsuccessful. She just can't do it with the heart pendant around her neck. So she stops and hugs Shelli and then starts fading away for good.

After all that Shelli heads home to find her parents waiting for her. They have her College Placement Exam scores. Remember those? Shelli, of course, has a perfect grade. Her parents have more news, however. Mayra WAS found to be cheating on the exam, as was another kid in a different state. So Shelli's current CPE score won't count. The tests are being thrown out, and everyone has to take them all over again.

Gaping Plot Holes: If Jennifer can't kill Shelli with the necklace on, then why doesn't she just rip it off her neck??

It was so much fun to go back in time and re-read one of the original R. L. Stine New Fear Street books. What's best about his books and series is that you don't have to read them in any order so you are able to start anywhere. "Scream Jennifer Scream" is number three in the New Fear Street series and I would be lying if I didn't admit that I re-read this one simply because it has it has my name in the title.

"Scream Jennifer Scream" is the typical 90s literary horror that I loved so much during my teenage years and I still love it today. It's a quick read at only 128 pages so you are able to power through the book in no time.

It focuses on a group of high schoolers who cheat on their college placement tests; but when Jennifer states she is feeling guilty about cheating and she has decided to come forward and report the truth about their cheating, the group of friends decide they must take matters into their own hands. They decide that Jennifer must die, but their plans go astray and they find themselves trying to stay alive instead. One by one they become a victim and those who are lucky enough not to meet their demise up front must try to stop their death before it is too late.

I absolutely love the fact that "Scream Jennifer Scream" reads like a classic slasher horror film. It has all of the fun of a 90s slasher horror film but instead you get to read about it and picture the movie inside your imagination. R. L. Stine can certainly bring a story to life and I can't wait to delve into another one.

I love R. L. Stine as he was one of the first authors to introduce me to the horror genre and I have never looked back since. I will definitely continue to read his old school horror books and his new ones as well.

Scream, Jennifer, Scream! is the 3rd book in the New Fear Street book series that I really had a good time reading! It is a book full of suspense and I will say it is one of the most gory and morbid Fear Street books that I have read so far. It had lots of dark moments to say the least…( being that it has most scenes involving death and even talks about suicide) it definitely had more mature themes than other books I have read.
Overall to not give out any massive spoilers this book shows just how far people are willing to go in order to hide their deepest and darkest secrets. No matter what it takes, even if it’s morally wrong and if it means hurting their “best friends” just to protect themselves and to uphold a good image and keep pretending to have these “perfect lives”. (we all know that can never end well.) What can I say this book is full of bad decisions made by these characters, one bad decision after another…after another. Which makes things become a bit repetitive it came to a point where it wasn’t a big mystery of who the real killer was.
There is this one scene where a character is described to have a glass right in the eye and the whole crime scene description is very gory, which shocked me to imagine the very bloody scene and how it was described in great detail.
I will also add that one of the negatives is that it really didn’t have a big element of surprise or a massive twist but the very end was a bit shocking and quite ironic, I didn’t expect it. There was something towards the end that didn’t make much sense and I would have liked to have been given an explanation. But something I liked and I’m glad about is that the characters got a big life lesson at the end and didn’t get away with it. In conclusion, this was a really good book! so with that being said I highly recommend it! I give Scream, Jennifer, Scream! 4 out of 5 stars! :)

Found this for a decent price on Thriftbooks so all I need now is The Bad Girl of these "New" Fear Street books.

I probably would have given this book five stars if it wasn't very obvious to me at a point in the story just what was going to happen.

A title like this made me realize quickly that I was going to enjoy it...a kind of Let's Scare Jessica to Death vibe.

So, the reason that her friends decide to go after Jennifer with the intention of murder is because she wants to come clean to the principal that she cheated on a college placement test.

Unfortunately, so did her BFF Shelli and the others in their circle.

They have a winter break from Shadyside High and Danny thinks that will be plenty of time for Jennifer to have an "accident" and only Shelli is reluctant at this plan. Liam, Mayra and Del are totally down for murder though...

Danny plans to do a hit and run on Jennifer when she leaves her job at a strip mall late at night after closing. The others wait for him to call or arrive at Shelli's to inform them that the job is done but as time passes...Danny never shows up.

All of them decide to drive that way and they are greeted by the flashing lights of cop cars and an ambulance, a car also wrapped around a light pole. There is blood and a dead body...but not the one any of them expected.

Do I really need to tell you anything that you haven't figured out? No but just in case prepare for some slight spoilers.

Jennifer's anger for the betrayal of her friends sends her on a revenge spree.

The ending is both bittersweet but also, darkly hilarious in typical Stine fashion. Painful, heartwarming yet with such a black comedy twist.

Scream, Jennifer, Scream! is a decent read especially for the Halloween season so if you get a chance to find it is worth checking out.

A group of long time friends decide to cheat on a test that will determine their eligibility for college, however, one of them decides she cant deal with the pressure of cheating and announces to the group that she will be going to come clean about it the following week to a higher up. The group freaks out because this will jeopardize their future, so what do they decide to do? Naturally, they decide to murder their tattletale friend by running her over with a car because that’s what long time friends do, right? 😆

As always you have to suspend disbelief in these YA stories, especially the ones from the 90s and particularly RL Stine’s series. Being much older now, i find humor in these books and even though they are written for a YA audience it’s just so funny how quick these characters in Fear Street go from 0 to 100 in a split second without any reasoning, much like this book.

I will say that at first i didnt think i was gonna like this one. The first 20-30 pages are pretty filler and much more filler than normal for Stine, but after the first death it picks up really fast and becomes so over the top that it was fun and silly by the end.

Snippet: I feel like it had a lot of potential, but it didn't quite reach it in the end. The plot was as over the top as some of the original Fear Streets and it was super funny how quickly the gang decided to kill Jennifer, but overall it was a bit of a letdown.

I liked how quickly the story kicked off, although that meant we lost out on getting to know the characters. Shelli was a decent protagonist I guess, but I think the whole thing could have been avoided if she'd told Jennifer the gang's plan. But then I'd have no book to complain about!

I think Stine captured the pressures American teens face in the lead-up to college [I'm just assuming; as an Australian, I don't think it's entirely as big a deal over here] – with how serious education is over there, I can understand why the group cheated and were so desperate to keep it a secret.

Check out my full review linked up top for an in-depth recap :)

We are now entering the world of horror and are stopping at Fear Street. If you are curious as to why it is famous ask the residents of Shadyside and they can tell you why.

Imagine having the possibility to achieve the perfect grade without studying would you take it?

Imagine suddenly having a guilty conscious and deciding to tell your teacher you cheated

Imagine telling your friends about this. They are not happy.

Suddenly

A break in the friendship occurs thats leads to a catastrophic decision.

Let me introduce you to Jennifer. She has some warnings thar you need to hear. It will be deadly if you dont.

Never tell friends if you become kinder
Never speak about the past
Never leave a blank space as a blank space means death.

Are you intrigued to find out more?

If yes, pick up the book. Look at the cover see what it reveals.

Not as good as the first two books of “New Fear Street”, but it was still enjoyable. Extremely far fetched I’d say, what is it with the teens in Shadyside resorting to murder as the solution of all their problems? This one in particular they come up with the plan so quickly, I’m sure there could’ve been a less gruesome plan to keep her from telling the truth but ok... I’ve noticed the amount of nonchalant talks of murdering people is a trend in the Fear Street series. Also, the whole Jennifer being dead the whole time, that was weird, and doesn’t make much sense. Besides a few plot holes, it was still fun to read.

None of this would have happened if they had just study hard for the test but I can see why they did it. I liked how this story got straight to the point of them plotting murder against their friends who planned on snitching but the ending was a bit disappointing. It felt too short but at least 2 lives were spared.

As far as Fear Street goes this is a fun one. It sets up premise, and then it just goes. Characters start dying, and everything rushes toward the final "twist". This is both the books strong point, but also its weakness as we really get no time to know anybody in any way, so the characterization is thin, even for a Fear Street novel.

Still, fun and pretty bloody. I had fun with it.

A group of friends cheat on a test, but Jennifer decides to confess which leads them to decide to kill her...but will Jen kill them all first? The name of this book really stands out but not in a good way. It was a bit of a surprising twist, but mostly lackluster.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

The premise of this book was not my favorite. I mean, these guys are cheaters, so it was gonna be really hard for me to feel sympathetic when bad things started happening. And I was right.

One of the friends, Jennifer, felt really bad about cheating so she wanted to go to the principal and tell him what happened. But the other friends got super upset and offended, and one of them even blamed Jennifer for “being in this mess”—a mess that involved them planning her murder!!

Oh, please. Like you didn't buy the test and cheat in the first place. Ugh.

How did this happen? she wondered. One day we're a bunch of friends hanging out together. The next day we're a bunch of friends planning a murder.

It was messed up. But I was into the story way more than I thought I would be after reading the synopsis! Why? Because all the friends started dying off instead of Jennifer.

I’m sorry, but they deserve it. Lol. And the plot twist at the end? I really enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed this! Honestly, the kids had all that terribleness coming to them, and I enjoyed every second of it 😆 I ended up really liking the story and the switcheroo that happened. Plus, I really enjoyed the supernatural element to it. I always love when these books have a little something supernatural to them.

The Fear Street connection: Not mentioned, but I presume one of the kids lives on Fear Street?
