The emergence and evolution of Egyptian feminism is an integral, but previously untold, part of the history of modern Egypt. Drawing upon a wide range of women's sources--memoirs, letters, essays, journalistic articles, fiction, treatises, and extensive oral histories--Margot Badran shows how Egyptian women assumed agency and in so doing subverted and refigured the conventional patriarchal order. Unsettling a common claim that "feminism is Western" and dismantling the alleged opposition between feminism and Islam, the book demonstrates how the Egyptian feminist movement in the first half of this century both advanced the nationalist cause and worked within the parameters of Islam.

كتاب مهم يتناول نشأة التيار أو الوعي النسوي في مصر مع أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات العشرين حتى منتصفه وتقاطعات هذا الوعي مع الإسلام والقومية وكيف كانت الخطابات الثلاثة : النسوية، الإسلام، القومية متداخلة تداخل يصعب تفكيكه.
كما أنه ثري بالمعلومات التي كنت أجهلها جهلا تاما عن النشاط النسوي القومي والاجتماعي الذي كان أبرز من نشاط الرجال وأكثر فاعلية ولا يقبل المساومات، وهو ما جعلني استعيد كلام صلاح عيسى عن البورجوازية المصرية ونزعتها التفاوضية مع الاحتلال بما يضمن مصالحهم الاقتصادية، في الوقت الذي كان فيه عامة الشعب الفقير والمهمش لا يقبل أي مساومات، وبما أن النساء كن مجردات من المصالح الاقتصادية ويعانين التهميش، فقد كانت نزعتهم تساير عموم الشعب فلا يقبلن بالمساومات والحلول الوسط السياسية فيما يخص القضايا الوطنية وقضايا التحرير.

Very informative but very dry.
Felt like reading an encyclopedia or a dictionary.
Lots of names, dates and other details.
It served the purpose but I wasn't entertained reading it.
