Such cheesy summer goodness! This is what I think of when I think of horror: poorly constructed caricatures of people with somewhat irredeemable qualities getting their asses handed to them. Since there are three books in this omnibus I’m going to break it out accordingly. All are of varying levels of absurdity.
SUNBURN
The story starts with the main character waking up and finding that she’s been buried in the sand up to her neck with the tide coming in. How one sleeps through all of that I have no idea but we’ll just say Claudia’s an incredibly deeper sleeper and leave it at that. It’s the first strange thing that happens, followed by a random electrocution, a near-drowning, and a dog attack. These things are terrifying, people! TERRIFYING! Add to that there might be a ghost in the house that only Claudia seems to see and you’ll be shaking right out of your trousers.
Everyone’s scared out of their wits but instead of calling the police or going to stay at a hotel or something Claudia calls her mom who can’t come pick her up for a convenient amount of time because the plot still needs to unveil its twist. What would summer horror be without a twist? In proper Stine fashion what’s going on has a perfectly rational explanation (well, made not rational but at least non-supernatural) and those who wreak havoc get their comeuppance at the end and despite the fact that everyone nearly dies, and one person actually does, everyone gets over it pretty quickly and moves on with their lives. Plus boys. Because they make everything better.
THE DEAD LIFEGUARD
While it had it’s allotment of cheese I actually liked this one, definitely far more than SUNBURN. It was more psychological and the plot played with the characters’ heads and it really kept you guessing. Lindsay nearly loses her mind by the end of the book because she’s convinced herself what’s going on is one way but, of course, it’s another and it ends up all working out.
Except everyone is rather wholly accepting of the twist in this one, which is a bit of a reach, and for the body count in such a short amount of time no one seems all that disturbed by it. Or at least they get over it rather quickly. Sure, there’s tension and people are feeling on edge but cheer up, guys! The summer can still be redeemed! At least they try. Until more people keep dying and the events of the past come back to haunt everyone.
ONE EVIL SUMMER
The one truly supernatural story of the bunch it’s creepy in its own right and I think it’s the shortest on cheese. You still have the same rather shallow characters and the silly things that happen to them but I think Stine’s writing works best when not so grounded in reality. The characters don’t appear so ridiculous and the things that happen to them aren’t so absurd when what’s going on could very well be something out of this world. And I think it’s fairly obvious in his books when it’s something supernatural versus when it’s not.
Here Amanda is at odds with the new babysitter, Chrissy, who seems to have weird things happen around her. Of course Amanda’s parents don’t notice, think Chrissy’s god’s gift and so on and so forth. But the weird things that keep happening start amplifying and everything’s getting worse the closer Amanda gets to Chrissy’s secret until, well, the big reveal and everyone must die. Low on the body count for a Stine book but, like all others, the dead are forgotten pretty quickly and the end is wrapped up with a neat little bow and everyone hugs and it’s all good. No repressive therapy needed.
Overall SUMMER HORROR is a good smorgasbord of Stine’s writing, from the mega-cheesy to something a bit closer to the horror that I love, I’m glad I can add it to my collection.

Still need a couple to complete my Collector's Editions Set (a handful I've had since I was a teenager), but I getting there!
I know it may sound so silly, but with my childhood & adolescence, R.L. Stine's Goosebumps & Fear Street really helped keep me above water. It helped keep me swimming.
If I had not been such a huge "BookIt" book worm, and liking how books helped me use my imagination to temporarily escape the harsh realities that were, well...

Because this is an anthology of 3 Fear Street books, I give it an average rating of 3.5 Stars. The first 2 stories weren't that great. The Dead Lifeguard started off strong and then ended up having loads of plot holes. The last one was the best IMHO. If I had to rate each story accordingly the scores would look like this: 2,3,4.

It's the middle of winter, so if you're craving some summer time fun, this book might be just for you!
Sunburn:
Claudia is invited to go on vacation with some friends from a camp she went to the previous summer. Claudia thought she was going to have the time of her life, just her and her friends alone, enjoying the seaside mansion with a private beach all to themselves. Just summer fun, right? Wrong! It all starts with Claudia being left out in the sun sleeping, buried in sand... deliberately? But that’s only the first of many “accidents” to come to the girls. Is it possible that their host is trying to kill them for what happened at camp last year? Or is it the stranger they Claudia keeps running into? They don’t think so, but all these accidents... why? What’s going on?!
I loved Sunburn! The f*cking plot twist at the end of the book was amazing! This is exactly why I love Fear Street! The mystery was amazing, it was very thrilling and suspenseful, plus there was also a bit of nostalgia there ;)
When it comes to Fear Street books, they can sometimes be a bit of a hit or miss, but Sunburn is definitely one of the best ones in the series that I have read! I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for a creepy summer read! Or, you know what, just read it whenever! Who cares! It’s great!

The Dead Lifeguard:
Lindsay is back at North Beach Country Club for another year of lifeguarding. But someone is killing off the lifeguards—is it one of them? And weird things are happening to Lindsey on top of this. Is the place haunted? Are there ghosts here? Is she the ghost?! OMG!
So there were two sort of mysteries going on at the same time, that may or may not actually be connected. This first is obviously the murder mystery, and the second is the weird things that are happening to Lindsey, which I can’t go into too much because of spoilers. But what I can say is that I found all this very intriguing! I would’ve never guessed the outcomes and I really liked that! You know how much I like being surprised by the reveals! At first, I was kind of iffy about the Lindsay reveal, but the more I read about it, the more I was okay with it. It was insane, but interesting!
Overall, a really enjoyable, fun read!

One Evil Summer:
Amanda and her family are off on vacation to Seahaven, leaving behind their home on Fear Street for the summer. But the Fear Street curse follows you around no matter where you go. And unfortunately for Amanda, not everything will be sun and games for her because, first, she has to go to summer school! Second, apparently Amanda is so irresponsible that he parents have decided to hire a nanny for her younger siblings. Enter Chrissy. Charming, helpful, evil, fun Chrissy. Oh, did I mention evil? Amanda certainly thinks so. But her parents don’t believe that sweet Chrissy actually has an underlying evil plan. So Amanda sets out to prove her theory, before Chrissy decides to do something really sinister, like IDK kill someone!
I absolutely loved One Evil Summer! It was super suspenseful and things were just insane when Chrissy was around! This book actually had a little bit of a supernatural touch to it, which I loved! It just made things that much more crazy and interesting!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I loved all the craziness, and of course, the creepiness and suspense these books always bring!
