Will Noah and Abby's relationship end when the veterinary conference does?
When her high-profile relationship takes a wrong turn, Abby Thames escapes to her aunt's house on Mimosa Key, because it barely has a grid. She doesn't want to read gossip articles about herself. She doesn't want to drop her expensive engagement ring behind the toilet either. And she certainly doesn't want tall, handsome Dr. Noah Benson to find her in such a compromised position in his villa as she tries to retrieve the diamond.
Noah's on the island for a veterinary conference. Never mind that he's never practiced veterinary medicine or that he just barely adopted the two dogs he's brought with him. He can't go back to the upscale ski resort and lodge he was promised but that was stolen from him by his ex-fiance, even if the beach is the last place he wants to be.
He's immediately drawn to Abby, as she seems to know he's a snow-lover despite his carefully chosen swimming trunks. Their spark is instant, and as they spend more time together, a wild idea hatches that he could buy the animal clinic on Mimosa Key that's just gone up for sale, and she can be his business partner. His personal partner. Life partner. All kinds of partners.
Then Abby's celebrity boyfriend shows up on the island, talking love, marriage, and babies. All the things Noah's been wanting to talk about with Abby. Too bad she never told him what she was looking for behind that toilet. Can Noah and Abby find shelter in each other from the storm of revelations that follow? Or will their relationship end when the veterinary conference does?
3-time USA Today bestselling author Elana Johnson writes adult contemporary beach romance. She is the author of over 130 books across two names, and there's nothing better than sun, sand, and swoon-worthy kisses! Unless it's a sweet-and-sexy cowboy - read those under her pen name of Liz Isaacson. Or an emotional, heartfelt women's fiction novel - read those under her pen name of Jessie Newton.
This is one of those "shared world" romances, so you get lots of random couples popping in and out like animatronics in a whack-a-mole game. None of them are important so they're just mildly annoying.
This is really short, so I chose to just grant the instalove premise and move on. And for the first half, that worked outstandingly because Cutie Patootie and Dr. Hotty Pants were fun to spend time with. And I don't mean in a shallow way, either, though it could be that I just liked them so well I was filling in blanks with my own inventions (as I sometimes do). I don't think so, though. Mainly because when they broke character it felt really manipulated in ways I could relate to specific details rather than mere impressions I'd supplied on my own.
So yeah, things blow up weirdly for a while around the mid point. And that felt more than a little gratuitous in a story already so short. So I lost a lot of my engagement, though I still bothered finishing. Until that point, I was at a solid four stars contemplating five. Afterwards, it's mainly a pity-play keeping it at three...
A note about Steamy/Chaste: There's no explicit sex, but there's enough fooling around and referenced physical intimacy that I can't really tag this one as "chaste", either. That's not a bad thing, though, because I thought both the detail and intimacy level was right for the story told.
When a hotel housekeeper and a non-practicing veterinarian meet when she is trying to recover something she lost in his room, things begin to happen. They are both trying to begin a new life after a break-up. Both need closure to the relationships they have left behind.
