Wow, lots of shit went down in this book! I'm no where near ready to write a review, so anyone waiting on me, here's a snapshot:

This was only a lukewarm read for me. Much more action/adventure/mystery plot than romance. And the romance seemed kinda hollow to me too. Plus, this is set up to possibly be a series and while it wasn't a cliffhanger, there were loose ends that frustrated me. Action/adventure folks will love this.

I was given a copy of this book free by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

Furtive glances across the hospital cafeteria have done nothing to further the relationship between Shawn and Hunter. It is not until a night held at gunpoint that things gel for the 2 but not for long.
Shawn has a history which sends him on the run.

I enjoyed this book. You knew there was something about Shawn and through flashbacks and then a letter you get to know what it is. A nice mystery that kept me glued to reading. Until revealed I didn't guess who the bad man was.
I am glad that there is a second book in the series which I am certainly going to read this month.

I don't think I've ever had a book leave me feeling quite so confused about whether I liked it or not. I know I didn't hate it and it was not even close to being the worst book I've ever read or the best for that matter. Actually for me the title explains it quite well. It was like hitting a patch of black ice and from there I just fishtailed my way through the story.

There was a lot that I really liked about this book. I liked the overall plot it was excellent and I liked Hunter. He had some serious emotional baggage going on and that's ok because let's face it, most people do to some degree. I liked that while Hunter did have said emotional baggage it was balanced with a loving family and some awesome friends. Then we have Shawn/Alex not so much on the emotional baggage which was nice. For Shawn/Alex it was a case of being in the wrong place at the right time or is that the right place at the wrong time...oh well, whatever it wasn't good for him to be there but unfortunately he was and it screwed up his life big time.

I can't really decide if these two men have the worst luck or the most incredible luck I've ever read about. On the one hand I'm pretty sure that by the end of the book given everything that happened to them at least one or both of them should have been seriously injured or worse but no they both survived, not totally unscathed mind you, being shot at numerous times, kidnapped, hunted by criminals (of the serious badass drug cartel kind) and lawmen alike, this one was sketchy to say the least because it was questionable as to who the good guys really were, as well there were traffic accidents involving multiple cars and I'm sure there was more but you get the picture, right?

Add to all of this Truman. Truman was very central to this story and he was epically a person that you love to hate. By the end of the book I was kind of wishing Truman would just die in a fire. I'm pretty sure that the ending was suppose to give him some kind of redemption and I'm sure for some it did...but, honestly for me...nope, just die in a fire Truman, ok? Thanks. (Just let me clarify here I did like that the author gave me this character who I was so easily able to direct my rage at, honestly the guy was just a bag of dicks).

Oh yeah, the dogs there are dogs. Huskies beautiful big fluffy huskies and really who doesn't like dogs? I actually wish the dogs could have had a larger part in the story but still they were there.

So all in all it was a busy book but there's no way I can say I didn't like it or enjoy it. I truly don't stay up until 3 a.m. to read a book that I don't like. Honest even on a bad day I don't dislike myself that much.

So that's it 3.5 slippery, fishtailing on black ice stars for this one. Rounded up because it's black ice and when you hit black ice you slide forward not straight forward but still forward.

(I was provided an ARC for an honest review.)

Let me tell you, this book hit all my buttons. I love plot, hot sex, and realistic characters acting in an adult way. Hitting Black Ice had all this in spades, and more. I hate to give more away than what’s already in the summary, but there are some fabulous twists and turns. Hunter has a past that haunts him, but the author manages to handle his backstory with a deft hand, writing his baggage in a way that adds to his character, not subtracts from it. That is SO HARD to find.

As a love interest, Shawn is hot, alluring, and darkly mysterious by turns. There was enough to him in the beginning that i could see why Hunter fell head over heels, yet enough held back that kept up the tension in the plot really, really well (without coming off as convoluted).

I mentioned this above, but what impressed the hell out of me was how the author placed the characters between a rock and a hard place, and had them handle it like you’d realistically expect someone to do. Nothing was overblown, or underplayed. Nothing tore me out of the pages or made me think, “Hey, a real person doesn’t actually react like that.” And there were some really intense, fun, action scenes. The adrenaline junkie in me cheered a lot.

The dialog was snappy, and the minor characters… well. Not to give anything away, but a certain FBI agent stole every scene he was in.

Finally, while the ending itself was satisfying, there was definitely room for a continuation. I will definitely check out a book two, should one be published. (HINT.)

So as you can tell, I really enjoyed this read. This book made my afternoon, and I give it all the stars.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Hunter is an interesting character. Emotionally, he’s mature and confident, able to know his own heart and his own needs. His last long-term boyfriend became abusive after getting caught up in drugs and drink and ended up killing himself in front of Hunter as punishment for ending the relationship. Hunter’s been in therapy, though, and knows it wasn’t his fault, just as Shawn’s situation — whether he is a fugitive who made a mistake, or the victim on the run from everyone — isn’t his responsibility. But he can’t help getting involved any more than he can stop himself from trying to help people when they’re hurt.

Which brings up the rest of it. Hunter’s a bit of an idiot. Very few of his actions make any logical sense. For example, Shawn tells him he’s on the run from someone who wants to kill him, so … let’s go do my laundry before we leave. Hunter doesn’t trust someone, with good reason, but will sit down and talk to him, will let the man flirt with him, and is neither scared nor upset. Emotionally, he’s a stellar character. But in every other way I found myself unable to really tolerate him.

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read early for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this story and was surprised as it turned from 'hello, we have chemistry' to 'why did you disappear without giving me your real name?' and then 'we're on the lam.'

Hunter had a crazy relationship backstory that he was still dealing with emotionally and my heart broke for him.

That part of the story felt heavy, but most of the rest of the story felt light, but maybe that's what romantic suspense is supposed to be. Even with all the tight spots they found themselves in, at no point did I forget that there would be a HFN/HEA ending. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I really loved the first part of this book. Hunter is working in an ER and has a crush on the admin named Shawn. Hunter was in a relationship previously that became abusive and ended in a suicide. Hunter hasn't recovered from that and is still dealing with the fall out. There is also obviously a bit more to Shawn although we only see this through Hunter's POV. Hunter and Shawn end up being held at gunpoint in the ER and then end up having sex more as a life affirming situation than anything else. However, they are both attracted to each other. So I love the book to this point but then it started to go a little off the rails for me. Shawn says it was nothing more than sex and they can't be in a relationship but then acts as if they are. This is when the suspense part kicks in and it's usually one of my favorite aspects but it just seemed to overwhelm the characters and so many things were going on. Lots of characters were introduced and it seemed a bit rushed. There are a lot of twists and turns as well. However, the character depth takes a backseat at this point and the relationship is suddenly instant. The villain was a surprise but I didn't really like the way it ended for him. There were also a few plot points that seemed to be left hanging. Maybe they will be covered in the next book.

Overall, I loved the first part of the book but the second part was just okay for me.

A copy of this book was provided to me by Netgalley and the publisher with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

Reviewed for Hearts On Fire Reviews - 4 hearts

For anyone who has truly been in a real life situation where you’ve encountered black ice, you have that breath stealing moment or three of fear, panic and adrenaline that seem to kick in while you try to navigate the bad patch and finally reach safety once again on the other side of it. And while this incident literally happens at one point in the book, I think the title represents the fact that action/adventure/adrenaline junkies will find a lot to love about this story; however, those who like high romance or those who expect to reach the safety of clear ground after the patch of black ice (i.e. no loose ends at the end of the story) may not be quite as satisfied. I happen to like both a lot, so I landed in the middle with this one.

It didn’t take long for this story to suck me in and get the blood pumping – the ER, gunshots, thugs, and hostages get your attention quick. The resulting release of tension (better known as lust) in the aftermath didn’t hurt either. And despite this attention grabbing kickoff, the action and suspense just continued to build throughout the remainder of the story with a number of twisty little paths along the way.

Ultimately, both Hunter and Shawn are compelling MC’s who both have experienced difficult situations very much affecting their current lives. They definitely form a romantic connection and have strong feelings for one another; however, it doesn’t necessarily feel romantic for a few reasons: there’s really not much buildup to their connection (it starts at high intensity and stays there – no wooing or gradual tension or explanation as to why they should even trust one another); not a lot of the story is actually dedicated to them being together as a couple (it’s about the mystery of Shawn’s past catching up with him); and it takes quite a while for enough details to come out that help you understand the back history of each man and what makes him tick.

All in, this story had a very interesting plot with lots of complexity. If you like stories that have good guys, bad guys (and sometimes not knowing which is which), lots of action (including the sexy kind fueled by instant lust vs. sweet romance), and a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end, then I’d definitely recommend this book. Be aware that there’s plenty of violence including death (both of the homicidal and self-inflicted variety).

Two damaged men. One with a secret and one with a past he can’t seem to escape. Love isn't always easy but for these two the world is working against them in more ways than one. Do they just walk away of what could have been or do they fight for each other and the future they could have?

Hunter works as a physician's assistant at the ER a place that gives him purpose and helps him work through his demons by helping others. He is a work in progress trying to overcome a past that won’t go away when he gets a major crush on the front desk clerk Shawn. When he gets rejected by Shawn he think that's the end but of course life has ways of taking fate out of our hands.

Shawn has a secret that he is desperate to keep hidden because exposing it could mean his death. But after a hostage situation and one moment of passion makes it hard for him to walk away from Hunter even though he knows it not only puts himself at risk but Hunter as well. When push comes to shove he knows he has to give up on the love if he wants to save the one he loves. Shawn disappears and HUnter learns the truth...or does he?

This was a really awesome story full of action and hot sexy scenes that just grabbed you along for the ride. I really loved the development of Hunter along the way with him being able to confront the past to be able to move forward plus watching him choose love over the job that feeds his soul was truly a great step for him. Both are very well developed characters that were both damaged by someone else’s actions but in turn save each other from the path they thought their lives were on. I felt the beginning was a little slow at times but overall it had great pacing. The secondary characters didn’t feel like secondary characters to me since so many played a major role in the ongoing story of Hunter and Alex, aka Shawn, for the whole book. Which I can say is something I love that not a lot of authors or stories achieve.

Overall a great read and I cannot wait to start book 2 Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses!!

Hunter and Shawn are coworkers in a busy ER. Hunter has been crushing on Shawn for a while now. There is a hostage situation in the ER that is pretty intense but Hunter and Shawn make it through. They end up in a supply closet together caught up on the high of surviving. Shawn makes it clear that it’s not going to happen again, but shows up later for more. It turns out he has reasons for wanting to hold Hunter at arms-length. Shawn has a past and because of this, he’s dark and mysterious. Hunter has baggage of his own that he has to deal with.

The story is very fast paced with lots of action and plot twists. The sex is hot. The characters are likable. This was a lot like watching an action movie. At times I felt like it was a bit busy. But it was consistent and overall it was a good story.

Currently there are two books in the Heart and Haven series, and I strongly recommend reading both of them in the correct reading order. These two books have the same MC's and characters and storylines from Book 1 do continue into Book 2. Seriously, I know I always say it, but you really, really, really need read these in the correct order!

Hitting Black Ice - Heart and Haven Book 1 by Heloise West

A lot happened in this book. It begins as a typical book set in a hospital, but it doesn't take long to disabuse me of that notion. Hunter loves his job in the ER as a physician's assistant. He comes from a family of law enforcement, and just like them, thrives on the controlled chaos and constant change. Hunter has a difficult and crazy past with an ex-boyfriend, and doesn't do relationships now. He has a crush on another hospital employee, but repeated attempts to get Shawn to go out with him, haven't gotten him anywhere. For his part, Shawn keeps to himself and is secretive. He's attracted to and noticed Hunter, but his life does not allow him to get close to anyone else. When drug dealers with weapons end up in the hospital, Shawn and Hunter work together to stay alive which leads to a supply cabinet life affirmation "meeting" when they survive the ordeal. But, if you think this is the end of the crazy, you would be wrong. This is just the beginning.

Once it got started, this story was non-stop action.

I liked both MC's and felt bad for both of them with their history but didn't have a strong connection to either of them. Honestly, I'm a little surprised with their history that I didn't feel more about them. I think maybe there was just so much action, that I didn't really feel the connection between the men. I mean, Hunter walked away from a job that he loved, and put his life on the line for Shawn/Alex, but I just didn't understand how he went from no connections to this. I really liked that both men had such supportive families, and thought they were great characters in this story. At first, the pace of this story was slow, but the author hit warp speed and suddenly there was chases, guns, FBI agents, drug dealers, kidnapping, and love on a path to giving Shawn a future. Once you get past the slow start, this is a fast paced book filled with action, two likeable MC's, supportive families and a HFN ending.

This is a fun, action packed story from start to finish! This is one of those books that keeps you guessing, you’re not always sure who you like and who you don’t! We meet Hunter and Shawn (we later learn he is Alex) working in a hospital, stealing glances at each other. Hunter has had a crush on Shawn for a while and when get up the nerve to finally ask him out it doesn’t go as he had hoped. The two are thrown together though when a drive by shooting has them hostages in the ER. Passion, secrets and lies follow though and these two have to try to find the truth if they stand a chance to be together for real.

There is a lot of action in this story and I really enjoyed the pace of this book. Hunter is a great character, I really felt for him and everything he was going through. He is still suffering from the trauma his ex put him through and the situations he finds himself in with Alex are a real test for him. Alex/Shawn, oh I felt for him too, trying to figure out which end is up with that guy. He’s been through so much and doesn’t know who to trust and yet he always finds Hunter. I really liked these two together and was definitely rooting for them, they really deserved to find that happy place. I liked the mystery of this story too, figuring out who the real bad guys are. This one really kept me on my toes from start to finish!

4 🌟. Great LGBT rep, fast paced action, new favorite author.

Further review:

This is one of those rare Netgalley arcs that I requested because it sounded like exactly what I wanted to read, got it within two hours, and then finished it three hours later. It left the book hanging wide open for a sequel, but I fell hard for Shawn and Hunter. Both young men were involved in a high stakes hostage situation, an mysterious FBI guy chasing after Shawn, guns, shootings, and more dangerous scenarios taking place in the snowy mountains during blizzard like conditions. Exactly what I wanted to read.

The only reason it’s four stars was because it left it hanging on a cliffhanger. Sigh. I very much need book two, and I am now invested in this series. The author immediately soared to my top ten favorite LGBT authors.

This made me think very strongly of the survival stories of Stargate Atlantis fanfiction that I used to read in a way, with lots of plot, romance, and characters. I very much enjoyed this and eagerly look forward to book two. Overall, I’m giving this 4/5 stars, and I’m hopeful book two will be out as quickly as possible. I especially liked the dogs that were thrown into the plot for good measure and the heroic rescue at the end. Highly recommended for those who enjoy reading fast paced romance with lots of twists and turns!

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes I read negative reviews, decide to read the book anyway, and then wonder what those reviewers found so bad about the book. Well, now I find myself in the odd position of being a negative reviewer of a book that most everyone else is raving about. While the story line was interesting, the execution was an absolute fail. I’m sorry, I hate leaving bad reviews, but this needs to go back to the editor.

Hitting Black Ice is a thriller about an emergency room PA, Hunter, and the somewhat reserved Shawn (Alex) he has a crush on. I can sum the book up in a few short phrases: talking, action, sex, talking, talking, talking, action with a little sex and more talking interspersed. The end. Wait, I forgot about the . What was that about? Seriously, someone please explain that to me.

The story is told entirely from Hunter’s perspective, with the exception of two chapters, which is a tragedy. Between the two, Alex is the more sympathetic character with a stronger voice. I’m really not sure why it was necessary to switch the perspective for two chapters, unless it was to draw out the story? If this is a HFN (which I confirmed when I checked the Goodreads page), why in the hell did it end on Alex and not Hunter? If Hunter is the character who needed to have an arc, why were we left hanging?

As I noted above, the book suddenly ends without any real wrap-up. It was a serious what the hell moment for me because we don’t get ANY real resolution. Not with the stuff in Alex's backstory, not with Hunter's issues with his past, and not with Hunter's and Alex's relationship. Not really a cliffhanger, but not exactly a HFN because, well, I didn’t get the sense they were really all that happy.

About the characters
I’m struggling to put into words why I’m conflicted about the characters, particularly Hunter and Nick. I really wanted to like Hunter and I get why Nick was a...well, replace the N with a D. One would assume automatic sympathy when you learn Hunter’s backstory, but something about the scattered way he acted and reacted throughout the book kept killing my empathy. Without a doubt, West clearly captured Hunter’s compassion, but man, he was seriously lacking mental fortitude. Maybe that was intentional to keep the story moving and set up the end? About 55% into the story, I had to grit my teeth to keep going.

Clunky writing
Aside from a wishy-washy character and the non-ending, there was a whole hell of a lot of talking, a lot of extra characters, and action that leads to nowhere. About three-quarters into the book, things tighten up, and we even get brief spots of humor here and there. And then, the book goes nowhere again. By the way, if you were surprised by the "bad guy" reveal, you were NOT paying attention.

One unarguable fact that has to be fixed are multiple instances of malapropisms and even a hilarious mondegreen, or is it an eggcorn? It’s Mata Hari, not Mata Hairy. Sometimes it seemed like West was trying to be a little too clever with the descriptions, which kept pulling me out of the narrative. And despite all the clever wordiness, there wasn’t a whole lot of tension or atmosphere.

OK, I guess that's enough of that. I don't mean to be rude, but I just don't get why people are loving it. I read hundreds of books a year, and there was just something lacking in this book. I doubt I'll be able to muster enough interest to find out what happens next, and I don't think I'll read this one again.

4.5 star review by Dan

To those of you who didn’t grow up in a cold climate, let me explain Black Ice. It is a thin layer of invisible ice that coats roadways at some times in the north. It doesn’t reflect your lights, so you can’t see it, but when you drive onto it, it is really, really, easy to lose control and go into a spin. That is a perfect title for this book. Because for Hunter and Shawn, just meeting each other has put them onto black ice. It doesn’t take much to put them into an uncontrolled spin out!

Hunter Charbonneau is a PA in a busy Massachusetts hospital. He has been majorly damaged by an ex-boyfriend who was a drug addict and drug dealer. After a lot of mental abuse, the boyfriend took his own life right in front of Hunter. After your boyfriend shoots himself in the head in front of your workplace, with your gun, after killing your dog at home, it is likely to mess you up for a while.

Hunter hasn’t become a monk since then, but he can’t get past the one night stand sort of hook-up. Lately though, Hunter has been noticing Shawn the new graveyard shift, front desk clerk in the ER. Enough so that he has changed his “lunch” break to match Shawn’s. Shawn is proving to be a tough nut to crack, and he tells Hunter he is seeing someone.

All that changes when a drug battle takes place around the corner from the hospital and Shawn and Hunter help one of the wounded drug dealers into the ER. All hell breaks loose when the rival gang comes into the ER and takes Hunter and Shawn hostage. But why is Shawn trying to hide from the news cameras?

Shawn is hiding some major secrets it appears, but it takes a while before we find out what they are. What happens when FBI Agent Nicholas “Nick” Truman shows up looking for Shawn? Who is this guy? We learn quite quickly and it adds some definite suspense to the storyline.

Hunter’s dad is the Coos County Sheriff in far northern NH, his brother is a Deputy Sheriff and his uncle is a NH State Trooper. What will happen when Hunter “runs” with Shawn and doesn’t cooperate with the FBI? Lots more action!

I loved the author’s build-up and the action in the story. I particularly liked the locations. I grew up in northern NH, personally knew the locations, and even know a few people with the last name Charbonneau. It was like old home day to me.

One word of warning. This story ends with a HFN. I’ve checked with the author and she is hard at work on a sequel and also hinted she might be working on Nick’s story as well. I can’t wait for both, so please get those fingers working Ms. West! It is cold up there in New England, so stoke up the wood stove and get typing!

I highly recommend this book. I believe you will enjoy it!

Original Blog Post: Blog Tour, eARC Review, Excerpt & #Giveaway: Hitting Black Ice by Heloise West

My Rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars

Hitting Black Ice. That title alone sent shivers down my spine as I personally have hit black ice and I got lost in the whirl, twirl and chaos of losing control. Thinking back, that was some scary thing happening and what made it worse was that there was no way to gain back the control unless I actually took control. That is a confusing thing to say but that is what I felt, what I thought, what I did and I gained it back. This is what Heloise West wrote about. When losing control meant taking the bull by its horns and just gain said control back by hook or by crook. It takes courage, it takes logical thinking, but the end result is: survival.

Hunter and Shawn fell in love amidst the chaos of a hostage takeover. That kind of love is never reliable for it develops at the heat of the moment and can fizzle out unexpectedly. The true surprise was that their love, instead of losing steam, gained more heat. The more dangerous the situation, the stronger the feelings became.

Unfortunately, Shawn had secrets and they were dangerous ones that would mean getting Hunter in the middle of something he knew nothing about and it can have fatal repercussions. He did not want that so sought to break off whatever it was they were going through but the buts came in a tidal wave of feelings and he could not swim against the current. He knew he was lost. So he stuck it out. But the past comes knocking on the door and it meant he had to go disappear to protect Hunter.

Hunter has had a traumatic past, no thanks to a mentally unstable boyfriend. He lost control and was trying to gain it back. Then Shawn was there and it was like the fates had it in for both men and just shoved them into each other. It was hard to resist and he refused to resist. When Shawn disappears, Hunter knew he had to either let go or continue to search and maybe offer the help his lover needed.

This was a very fast read for such a heavy plot with a whole lot of things going on that involved the FBI among other things and characters. Complicated this story may be but it really worked for me. The pace was fast and never lost its heat, especially when the erotic scenes between the two male characters got in the middle of the tense situation and actually lightened up the read... but in a HOT! way.

Great story. Highly recommended for those who like intrigue, mystery, thrillers, suspense and HOT! man on man action. Romantic? Not really. Just a great love story and I loved it.

This review was originally written for Nautical Star Books. I received one copy of this book at no charge in exchange for my honest review.

Let me just say that Hitting Black Ice is not a ‘light read’ but it is a riveting one! If you are looking for fluff romance, this probably isn’t your best bet. But if you enjoy a read plot with twists and turns you wont predict along with a bit of sexy heat I encourage you to check it out!

Shawn and Hunter work together in the ER and Hunter has a bit of a crush on his co worker. He tried asking him out but was turned down when Shawn insisted he was seeing someone else. Then, the two of them are thrown together in a hostage situation at the hospital and the adrenaline rush afterwards leads to a heated exchange in the hospital linen closet. Tentatively, they begin a relationship with each other after Shawn admits that he really isn’t seeing anyone. However, both men have baggage which causes emotional turmoil as well as quite a bit of danger along the way!

I don’t want to give away too much of the plot because Hitting Black Ice is all about the mystery! Suffice it to say that Shawn isn’t who he says he is but has a really good reason to lie about it. He is on the run and his past is catching up with him. Hunter has emotional baggage left over from his previous relationship that ended very badly. Every step of the way he hears his ex’s voice in his head and it is definitely messing with him.

Let me just say that the plot twists in this book really kept me on the edge of my seat and turning page after page. The characters are not always ‘together’ in this book and as a reader you get to know more about Shawn’s story than Hunter does. So, when you see Hunter doing certain things you want to yell NOOOO! at him but he doesn’t know he is making a stupid choice! But, you also get inside Hunter’s head and get a great understanding of his emotional vulnerabilities whereas Shawn doesn’t quite understand him at the beginning.

Hitting Black Ice was an incredible read, although because it was so full of action and suspense I didn’t get quite as much romance as I was wanting. Not sex…but romance. I bit more of the slow, tender discovery period that comes as two people are falling in love would have really sent this book up to 5 stars for me. However, this is honestly a phenomenal book and I definitely recommend you check it out!

I loved the first part of this novel. The whole story begins with Hunter who is working in a busy ER and has a bit of a crush on a new admin named Shawn. Right from the beginning, it’s clear that Hunter has a lot of emotional wounds that are still healing. His previous relationship became abusive and ultimately ended with a suicide that Hunter feels was in- part his fault.

There’s a lot going on in this book. The first part of the novel seems really authentic and genuine. Even a few pages in, West manages to make Hunter a sympathetic character. It’s obvious that he cares about people, he loves his job, but he’s also still healing. He seems like a real person… someone I’d want to get to know.

The depictions of trauma in the book are well-written and authentic feeling. I really enjoyed that Hunter stayed in character throughout the novel. No matter what came up for his character to deal with, he stayed true to the type of person he was.

The intrigue and suspense gear up quickly in Hitting Black Ice. Hunter and Shawn are caught up in a violent and deadly hostage-taking at the hospital. After a violent killing, being held at gunpoint, an outburst that nearly results in Shawn’s death… the two men get together in physical, affirmation of life sexual encounter in a storage room at the hospital. Even as Shawn candidly declares he’s only in it for the physical release… the two men are drawn to one another.

The pace of the novel changes at this point. At times it seems a bit too rushed because of the sheer volume of characters and plot points to remember. No one is quite what they seem and there are a few significant and surprising reveals. The attraction between Shawn and Hunter goes from physical to love a bit too quickly as the plot escalates.

When the end of the book arrived, I found myself a little bit unsatisfied. The end was abrupt and there are lots of loose ends. I assume that many of the unresolved plot-points will be taken up in the continuation of the series.

All in all a good read, and certainly enough that I’m curious to continue reading the series.

Five Star

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This story contains mention of domestic violence and suicide. If these subjects bother you, just be aware.

I really LOVED this story. It was about hope, love and trusting in yourself and others to do what's right. Hunter and Shawn have a cute, albeit a distant relationship with each other. They have "dinner" together and I thought it was such a sweet thing. Their crush brought me back to my younger days when looks across the way were all I could muster. What Shawn and Hunter's relationship evolves in to is one of pure trust and love.

Despite the few hiccups in the beginning such as the crazy ER catastrophe and the evasiveness of Shawn, both men are able to see past their skittish exteriors deep in the soul of the other. Hunter's past is less than rosy as well, with Jerry a constant internal reminder - the tiny devil sitting on his shoulder telling him he's not good enough. I thought that having Jerry's voice in the story really made Hunter's past and struggle much more realistic. It was like having some of Jerry right in the story, despite him not really being a character.

As for the FBI and Hunter's family - they were all great additions to the story. Hunter's family, without question, coming to the defense of Hunter and what Hunter believed showed how true family stick together. That despite their reservations with Hunter's ability to choose a partner well (especially after Jerry), they stuck by him, because they loved him.

I would definitely read more Heloise West. I hope she writes another story so that I can learn more of what happens after this one concludes. I would love to see where Alex's life goes. The only little thing were the typos and missed spacing. I think one more read through with an editor and they will catch these things.

after surviving a hostage crisis in the e.r. where they both work in hitting black ice, hunter and shawn are forced to face the attraction that has been building up between them. yet, both of them have past baggage that weighs them down.

shawn is on the run from the witness protection program after his handlers proved to be double agents for the crime lords he was ratting out. there's a lot of crazy convoluted twists to his part of the story, and the explanations for those things come late in the game, and i'm not one hundred percent sure i understood where everything went wrong for him, but basically he's running and falling in love with hunter is such a bad idea, because he is lying to him about who he is, and he also is so worried about putting him in danger.

meanwhile, hunter had an emotionally abusive ex who killed their dog and then proceeded to shoot himself in front of hunter's eyes in the parking lot of the hospital he used to work at. so needless to say, there's a lot about the hostage situation that is triggering, and later on the danger that he and shawn find themselves in, brings back some bad memories.

but the key thing here, is that in spite of all the trauma and baggage, and the hurt these two cause each other, there's also a deep connection. hunter can't quit shawn, and shawn can't let go of hunter either, even when he's worried that staying will make everything worse. so somehow they need to untangle the mess and make everything right again. but they'll need help, and some of it will come from the most unexpected places.

I didn't love this, but I liked it well enough.

What I liked:
~ the premise -- once I realized what was going on, I enjoyed the intrigue.

What wasn't as strong:
~ the characters -- having this narrated mostly by Hunter made it tricky in places. First, Hunter doesn't know what's going on with Shawn/Alex, but it's not only that -- it's how Hunter doesn't trust his own feelings/instincts (perhaps because of the trauma in his past). I felt like I also couldn't trust his impressions, and that meant my sympathy for all the characters introduced by him was lukewarm and wary instead of engaged.
~ how Shawn ended up where he's at --

What I didn't like that much:
~ how quickly Hunter decides Shawn is for him (especially after all the doubts he voices initially)
~ the whole situation with Truman --

All in all, it was an okay read and had its high points, but I probably won't re-read it or pick up any of the sequels.

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing to read an arc of Hitting Black Ice by Heloise West for an honest review.

”Intellectually I know. Emotionally, it's much harder.”

And that pretty much sums up the story, emotionally speaking. Hitting Black Ice was not easy for me to follow. The author’s writing is okay; the flow and plot could improve. After I knew what was going on, it was easier to follow the story. Or the characters, I should say. The story is character-driven, and it depends on the actions of them for the story to continue. I quite enjoy character-driven novels; even some of them end up being my favorites. Hitting Black Ice was just right. As I said before, it could’ve been better if it wasn't for the flow.

Hitting Black Ice is about Hunter and Shawn both still healing and making a life for themselves after the incidents that stain their past. The difference between them is simple: One is trying to hide from being found, and the other is trying to find love through him.

The story follows the life of Hunter, an ER nurse whose world view changes after helping Shawn carry a gun-down drug dealer inside the emergency room.

And it follows Shawn, whose past needs to stay hidden for him to believe he could live a healthy and regular life. A life he craves and fantasies as Hunter slides through his hard shell.

They both go through falling in love and practically throwing all their hard work away to save each other. From the fear and death, for what comes for them and themselves.

Hitting Black Ice is not a simple love story. But for them, a love story it is.

4.5 Stars for thrills, spills and spice!

I first read this shortly after release day in 2014 and this re-read was just as good as the first.

Intrigue meets romance.

Shawn Brown was a man running from the law and ran into the arms of love. He was avoiding getting involved for the mere fact that people were after him and he did not want to get another person involved.

Hunter, a doctor, had a crush on the ER night desk clerk but never acted on it. After being pushed by a coworker, he finally approached Shawn only to be rebuffed. Soon enough though, a hostage situation had both men seeking each other out in the supply closet.

I came back for more of you.--Shawn

Hunter and Shawn could not stay away from each other despite it all. Each had issues they tried desperately to keep from one another. But, secrets had a way of coming to light and never stayed undercover.

This book had it all. Intrigue, loads of sex and one agent I am still wanting to strangle. A must read.

For me, this was a bizarre, completely implausible story where a simple crush on the new hospital admin assistant somehow turns into a cross country run from the mob and FBI double agents.

I found the pace of this story uneven and the character development awkward. And the editing! At one point, early in the book, a typo actually gives away a character’s second identity, causing immediate confusion and later let-down. The romance in this story worked at times, but it felt a little bit instalove, then hot and cold to keep the plot moving. I enjoyed Hunter at the start and I came to like Shawn/Alex at the end, but neither man was entirely memorable.

Moving between narrative voices and moving back and forth in time takes a certain amount of skill. I felt like this story just lurched awkwardly between perspectives. Shawn/Alex’s backstory left me feeling dizzy and confused, as did the FBI double agent story. Even by the end, I was trying to keep characters straight and figure out who the goodies and baddies were.

So, while this had some exciting parts and a little romance, it wasn’t a favourite. The m/m genre has come a long way with action and adventure stories and I’d recommend readers look to writers like Abigail Roux, Charlie Cochet, SE Jakes and Kindle Alexander for stories of action, adventure and romance before looking to this one.

3.5 stars so rounding up to 4 stars.

i'm a bit torn on this book. i love romantic suspense books, especially in the m/m genre (hello! 2 alpha males? yes, please). the writing was a bit hard to follow at times which slowed down the story for me. i'm guessing this is the start to a series as well because the ending was a bit abrupt and left a few questions floating around.

i loved the suspense...it was pretty well written and surprised me several times. there were many twists and turns that i was not able to anticipate which is typically not the case.

alex and hunter were both strong characters even though they both need a bit a healing after both going through tough issues. the scene that threw them together was intense and prety awesome. their love story has great potential and if there is a follow up i'd like to see more of that develop.

the secondary characters were all very strong and really helped make the story. i loved joan even though we just got a small glimpse of her. truman is still a bit confusing and left me with some questions.

overall, i liked the story even though at times i wasn't sure i did. i'd definitely read a follow up if it were written.

This is a masterful book. First of all, I have to say - what a title!! And the story itself doesn't let the fantastic title down. It is superbly well written. It has a complex and intriguing plot, realistic characters, and a great love story to boot. I loved this.

I don't want to give too much away - as the suspense is a large part of the story. However if you enjoy romantic suspense, I can highly reccommend this book. There's real soul to the story - and what really struck me was how realistic I found both Shawn and Hunter. Their characters jumped out of the page, and I felt as if I was reading about real people.

The action scenes are well handled - sometimes I get 'lost' in an action scene. I think I must be a fairly visual person, because I often pause in action scenes to have to try and imagine what is actually going on - and I sometimes struggle. I never did so here. The way the scenes play out, they unfolded from the page with a very cinematic quality.

The relationship between Shawn and Hunter is very touching, and you really root for them throughout the unfolding drama.

Finally - I have to say that I loved Nick!! What a hot, sexy character he is!

Great read and highly recommended.

Hunter a P.A. in a local emergency room has a crush on Shawn the guy that works the Admin desk. But refuses to act on it because of a past incident that is still haunting him, Shawn a quiet guy has been watching Hunter but also refuses to step up because of a past that is chasing him. When a drive by shooting brings these two close together physically and emotionally all bets are off. But will both of their pasts let them win?
Talk about action packed, wow. These two souls, such tragic resent pasts. On the run mentally, physically and emotionally but they are willing to take a chance on each other until Shawn’s past catches up and Shawn runs again. The chemistry between these two, amazing from the first looks across the cafeteria room and doesn't stop. The plot twist that brings both of these people and the family and friends together, just superb writing I read it from start to finish in one sitting.

This book was provided by the author via IndiGo Marketing & Design in exchange for an honest review.

This is an interesting book with an intriguing storyline but unfortunately it is just an okay read for me. I like Shawn/Alex and how well he deals with all of the terrible events in his past and how he tries so hard to protect Hunter from his enemies but I wish we had known more about his background in the beginning of the book as it would have made for a more cohesive story. Hunter is a difficult character for me to like but his willingness to step in and help anyone in need is admirable. They are sweet together but their relationship feels very rushed at times and some of the obstacles they encounter and their reactions to them are a bit over the top. I love Hunter's family and his relationship with them as well as the way they jump in to help him. My least favorite part is how it ended so abruptly and with so many unanswered questions that will hopefully be dealt with in the next book.
