John Andreas Widtsoe (31 January 1872 – 29 November 1952) was a Norwegian-American scientist, author, and religious leader who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1921 until his death in 1952.
Widtsoe was one of the foremost Mormon thinkers of the early twentieth century. I picked this up not knowing the contents on the theory that nothing I've read of his has ever disappointed me - his Rational Theology, available on Project Gutenberg, is especially good. This book was also great.
Glancing back at the table of contents, there are about 50 essays on a variety of topics. Most were originally published in missionary periodicals, esp. in Europe. Many of the pieces in the first several sections relate stories of Widtsoe's travels in Europe with gospel applications. One collection of essays "Science and Religion," where Widtsoe, as a scientist, has an especially interesting perspective. Much of the balance of the book consists of pieces on various Gospel topics, often presented from a rather different perspective than you'd get from a modern Sunday School manual.
If you're interested in Widtsoe, I'd consider reading Rational Theology first for a more systematic exposition of his ideas. Then, if you liked that, you will like this.
