When paramedic Nick Swain responds to a shooting in a seedy neighborhood, his entire world is thrown off its axis. His life is threatened…twice. Allegations of racism and medical neglect threaten his career and his ability to sleep at night. Not that he’ll be sleeping any time soon after the incident throws him into the path – and arms – of Detective Andrew Carmichael.

One hot night after another with Andrew may help Nick relieve some stress, but sex won’t solve every problem in his life. With the media hounding him and the city watching his every move, he starts to wonder if the world is out to get him.

The world may not be out to get him, but someone is.
And that someone wants Nick dead.

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.

This was a solid 4 star read.

Sadly, I haven't enjoyed a lot of LA Witt's newer stuff. I've had this one on my Kindle for awhile now, got it as a freebie. I was hesitant to read it based on the length but it actually read pretty quick.

Both MCs were likable. The plot was engaging, maybe not too suspenseful...but entertaining nonetheless.

Yeah, the paranoia level was pretty high at times. But it didn't bother me much.

Steam was good, LA Witt usually always delivers there.

Overall, a solid read. I'll more than likely read the next in the series and would recommend this one. It's a HFN ending. I may leave Andrew and Nick's story here but book 2 is different characters.

Re-read November 2016 Great comfort re-read! And if you haven't read it, the trilogy is free on Amazon. Great series, recommended.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

Wow, did I EVER forget how fucking GREAT this book was! I had originally rated it a measly 4 stars, but I went ahead and bumped it up to 5 stars and then bypassed my favorites shelf and put it on my fuck yeah, 5+ stars shelf. I originally read it and the sequel Search Me back in 2011, the story of a EMT and cop thrown together one fateful night on an emergency call. Their relationship is burn-the-house-down scorching and all the angst, sexual tension, suspense, action and passion made for an incredible love story.

M/M romance fans, this is a MUST READ. L.A. Witt really knows her stuff and has proven it over and over. I'm so glad I chose to re-read this one and can't wait to go through her library and re-read the rest. (She even does hetero under the pseudonym Lauren Gallagher!)

Nick Swain is a bisexual paramedic who likes to unwind after a tough shift by having copious amounts of sex. It's his way of dealing with the horrible things he experiences while at work, and as unhealthy a coping strategy as it may be, it works for him; for his past partners, not so much.

Nick finds himself in the most stressful work situation yet when on a call he is held at gunpoint while treating a wounded (undercover) detective. He stays as calm as possible and keeps doing his job, but the fallout of the event leaves Nick anxious and scared - mostly because people are questioning his decisions after the fact and because Nick is certain he's in continued danger due to his perceived actions from that day.

One good thing that comes from this horrible ordeal is that Nick meets detective Andrew Carmichael. The two hit it off immediately, diving into bed to release their built-up stress and tension. Andrew understands Nick's need to use sex to de-stress. In this they are a perfect match.

The two men grow closer and things get even more heated (if that's even possible) as they work together to clear Nick's name, while Andrew tries tirelessly to keep Nick safe from further possible threats.

Cover Me is mostly a steamy contemporary M/M romance, with a side story that's a little bit action/thriller.

This has probably been my most enjoyable Witt story to date. I continue to struggle a bit with her writing style, but man does she write some great sex scenes! It was all systems go when Nick and Andrew hit the sheets, and although some may argue those scenes were too plentiful, I was okay with it.

Overall, this story was a fun little M/M action romp, with plenty of steam and humour to keep it interesting.

Audio Edition:

This was my very first Charlie David audio book and it won't be my last! In general, I tend to shy away from M/M audios as much as possible because I've found myself annoyed with many of the popular narrators in the past, but luckily I really enjoyed Charlie's narration, to the point that I'll probably eagerly seek him out from now on.

I got to 28% through persistance and skimming. The writing style doesn't work for me - first person with long conversations interpersed with italic thoughts that came to irritate me.

Nick has a long conversation with his boss then re-hashes it in an even longer conversation with his ex. Witt researched paramedics and delivered a lesson on budget cuts and medical issues. The undercover cop breaks cover and casually gives out full details on suspects to someone he'd just met.

It's repetitive, has a plot based on paranoia and uninspiring characters. Wasn't feeling it. (But it was free from amazon)

Nick is a paramedic. Like all cities everywhere, enough money to go around is the big issue in everybody's face...so when the city's budget cuts created a hopeless situation that made emergency workers like himself have to take care of an area that was far too big and too far away...the result is that people often just don't get the help they need until it's way too late, and difficult decisions have to made in a heartbeat. This is nothing he can do anything about so he just does the best he can by treating the ones that he can save which often means leaving the ones that are so badly wounded that they wouldn't have survived anyway...and he often has to make this decision in a matter of seconds.

At the scene Nick is confronted with two-gunshot victims...both still alive but one so badly injured that she was nearly dead. He had no idea that the one that he decided had the best chance was a police officer that had been shot confronting the one he left to die. Nick was threatened and held at gunpoint at the scene for making that choice. Now he has a stalker threatening to kill him for it. He seeks out Detective Andrew Carmichael. It was his work partner that Nick saved.

It turns out they have a lot in common and eventually hook up as more than just friends. The man that threatened Andew at the scene is out to hunt him down and kill him. Of course, everyone has an opinion about what he did and a media circus over whether he did the job that they know nothing about, "right". They are now following his every move. Andrew wants to continue to do the job, but sometimes his presence just makes things worse, and this includes his budding relationship, but neither he nor Andrew are sure what they mean to each other, or where the danger to Nick may come from next.

I liked the characters, and the story moved along smoothly. The ending was not a big surprise, except in the details, and the conclusion to the romance happened really fast. It had a few plot issues...especially the department and the city putting Nick in the position that they did knowing that he was being stalked, but then I have never written a book, so I'll trust the author on that one. I understand there is a sequel.

There were parts of this story that I felt were good and enjoyable. The paranoia, while it made sense, started to overwhelm the story and became too repetitive for me. I did like both Nick and Andrew and since both had similar stressful jobs, they made sense being together. Towards the end of the book, it seemed like too much was thrown in and that the ending came quickly. I would have liked it if it had been spread out throughout the story and not just be so crazy and dramatic right at the end.

Paramedic Nick Swain has a high-stress job, made worse by budget cuts that leave too few people trying to take care of too big an area. When things get tough, he tries to stuff it all away in his head and lock it there with the aid of hot, hard sex. His last boyfriend was fine with the sex, but not the locking away part, and couldn't deal with being used for relief without knowing what happened. Now Nick is on his own, and after a really bad day he hooks up with one of the people from the scene, Detective Andrew Carmichael. It turns out they have similar and compatible styles.

But the job has not only left Nick with nightmares about triage and wrong choices, it's left him with real-world problems from those choices. Between a media circus over whether he did the job right, and a violent stalker who is certain he didn't, it's not just the internal pressure that is getting to Nick. Andrew wants to help, but sometimes his hovering makes things worse, especially when neither is sure what they mean to each other, or where danger may come from next.

I liked the characters, and the book moved along smoothly. The ending was not a surprise, except in the details, and the conclusion to the romance element happened fast (but there is a sequel, so I'm fine with HFN.) I had a few plot issues with this, but was generally engaged, interested and pulled through the book. I cared about the main characters, and plan to read the sequel soon.

Nick and Andrew's relationship is hot! It drove me a bit crazy with Andrew constantly putting more ideas into Nicks head when obviously Nick has plenty going on up there on his own. Even though Andrew was doing it to be cautious. I love their raw need for one another, and understood those needs to get passed the emotions and stress of one another’s jobs. It showed just how much they were meant for one another. The plot was great and keeps you on the edge front to back. 4 star worthy!

4.5 stars. Very good m/m romantic suspense about a paramedic who is consumed by guilt over a judgment call that left someone dead and put his own life in danger. Maybe. If he's not just being paranoid.

The first few chapters were so exciting and I loved them - the last few chapters were also really exciting and I loved them. However, the middle part kind of bored me. Then there was the fact that Nick already had so many issues dealing with trauma that I have a VERY hard time believing he will get past his guilt and trauma for the way things went down at the end of the book. He isn't willing to get help and I just feel like that will greatly impact his relationship.

I will be generous and give it three stars. It was too wordy everything was described down to the most boring detail and Nick’s inner dialogue was repetitive and just not interesting. If you cut out half the words it would have been a lot better, IMO

This book has some very extended descriptive passages that lost my interest. If this story had stuck more to the storyline (with reduced length) I would add a star - that part was pretty well put together; although working out the main antagonist wasn't difficult.

Ugh. I'm calling this read even though I'm giving up. I made it 80% and I just don't care about the MCs at all and have zero sympathy and I'm not sure why and don't care enough to figure out why. I'm so glad I got this for free and wish I'd given up earlier. *sigh* Oh well, at least I listened to the audio and was able to do other stuff while listening.

Did I mention the crazy formatting thing? I think I got this from amazon, and every few paragraphs there are random indents and centering...

But...the story is great. Nick's character's paranoia was well done, the relationship between Andrew and Nick was hot and the depth of emotional connection clear.

The plot was a tiny bit predictable, but with LA Witt's snarky cockeyed slant (I think she could probably make the menu at McDonald's wickedly funny) I really didn't care that I knew who the bad guy was. I didn't even say I told you so when I realized I was right because I was too busy chuckling.

I really need to read me some more LA Witt and/or cop stories...

This book was a great read, tense, exciting with some very hot sexy scenes. The whole deal or a paramedic doing his job and being put in danger for it - I liked this immensely. The way a misinterpretation of what someone says can lead to hostility and violence. It opens so well and this pace and energy is carried throughout the book.

A great read.

Soo, what to say about this book? I liked it, so I gave is 3 stars. I liked that Nick and Andrew found eachother, and the romance developing between them. It was sweet. Unforunately the suspense in the book didn't quite move me. Sorry, but it's the truth. I don't know more what to say. You could read some other review to get another idea about the book I guess.

Well written, but I didn’t enjoy it all that much

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 6/10

PROS:
- The action gets going immediately and gripped me right from the start.
- For once, I actually believed in the speed with which the characters jumped into bed together. Nick has enough of a fixation on having sex after his harrowing ordeal at the start of the story that it felt organic to me that the guys would wind up together so soon afterwards. (see cons below also)
- The paramedic details felt realistic to me. Nicely varied and not over-the-top on the details, but thorough enough that I got a good sense of what was going on every time Nick and his partner were out on a call.
- I felt that Nick and Andrew had good chemistry. I typically don’t even read most sex scenes nowadays unless they’re unusually good, and these ones held my interest.

CONS:
- Nick has a bit of an obsessive personality. I understand that something traumatic happens to him at the start of the story and he’s worried because the media won’t let it rest. But a large percentage of the rest of the book is about him dwelling on the incident and worrying about what might happen rather than being present in the moment.
- There’s a lot of back-and-forth shyness and awkwardness after the one-night stand, when both men are interested by trying to decide whether or not to go any further. It’s kind of amusing, but I didn’t find it all that believable. It seemed to me that two confident grown men wouldn’t hesitate to go after each other again, especially after establishing how compatible they are the first time.
- The book doesn’t have a cliffhanger ending, per se, but there are several things left unresolved at the end.

Overall comments: I found the first part of the story riveting and the relationship engaging. But all the examination of Nick’s paranoia (which, to be fair, is justified at least partly) I found tedious. Is it well written? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Not entirely.

Another fine story by LA Witt. This one focuses on Nick, a paramedic and Andrew, a cop. If that sounds like a recipe for excitement - you'd be right. And in their case, the excitement is both in and out of bed.

After a call gone awry, Nick finds himself in the midst of a PR skewering and he's getting death threats. That makes it hard to actually do his job, which he is very good at. Andrew was witness to what went down and what starts as a one night stand to blow off some much needed steam (again and again and again...), turns into more very quickly.

Ya see, Nick has always had problems in relationships. After having a rough day/night on the job, he doesn't want to talk about the horrors he's seen. He really prefers a more life affirming way of getting rid of the stress. Unfortunately, his previous significant other's haven't understood that and always felt that Nick was just shutting them out. Well, he was, there is no doubt. What he doesn't understand, is the talking about things isn't always for the benefit of the person doing the talking. People need to feel needed in more than just physical ways. So, he has some issues there.

Andrew is in a unique situation, wherein he understands the job that Nick does. They don't always have to talk about what went down at a job in order to get what the other needs. But, they do talk about it some, probably because Andrew is so close to the situation already. I think his relationship with Andrew will be good for Nick.

I enjoyed Nick and Andrew's chemistry (a lot) and the suspense elements were well done and I didn't expect everything that happened by any stretch. LA Witt sure knows how to put her characters through the ringer! Seriously, these men get all kinds of banged up by the time the story ends.

Well done.

A 2.5 to 3 star book only for being well written & having a well thought out plot. But I found parts of this boring with too much internal dialogue often repeating the same thing over and over. A first person POV did not help this story. I think we're supposed to feel empathetic not claustrophobic. As for Nick & Andrew, I'm not sure why they're in love other than their similar stressful jobs & they both use sex to unwind. This book could have done with a lot more action and a lot less worrying & worrying about what's going to happen.

A read from my first responder's period. (No, I'm still in that period.) Forgot the 'ol ice-cube-&-warm-mouth trick while blowin' a guy. (Here in CA we use ice for cooling coffee ya know.)

OK, the real review. Lotta sex (this is how they combat 'job stress', the cop and the emt). When I wanted the story to move along, these two were at it again! Was THIS the plot? I thought it was a bit overkill myself. The emt gets death threats from the bad side of town and THIS interested me greatly, more so than the sex. (I'm getting so old.) Good story, great sex, continues in book two.
