Interesting series, especially if you enjoy thinking about how people respond to crazy situations. It is very psychological. A future earth, with a completely different way of living. Read them in order, as it is helpful to have the background from book 1. I really enjoy the lead characters and the telepaths.
The only thing that got to me is that everyone speaks quite properly, so sometimes it doesn't feel like realistic spoken language. Especially for me, since I am not nearly that orderly when speaking!
But a great idea, interesting world and a good mystery to solve. Looking forward to the next one

Amber, one of only five Telepaths in one of the great Hive Cities on future earth, helps stop crime from happening, and if that fails, helps capture the criminals. Someone she knew is dead, and it's only a matter of time before someone else dies. Amber and her team are not only working to stop this criminal who is very elusive, but Amber has challenges of her own due to the risk of reading the thoughts of nefarious types.

While there are a few weaknesses in this book, overall I still really enjoy Janet Edwards' writing. Since the POV is an 18 year old, I don't worry too much if not all of the other characters are fully developed. This is about action, danger, love and various and sundry other things in this scifi novel.

Overview: An excellent detective story in a fascinating future setting designed to ask serious questions about society. Science Fiction and Detective Fiction at it's best.

After 1st Reading: Janet Edwards is excellent. I've enjoyed all of her books, she creates interesting settings and characters that you instantly care about. With this book however she shows a new level of quality writing, and a crime investigation worthy of Arthur Conan Doyle (which I can say with confidence having just finished The Valley of Fear).

Finishing this novel was one of those moments where I wanted to shout "Yes!" because of the excellent ending - and then almost instantly felt sad because I already missed the characters.

I just need to repeat the key fact in this review: Janet Edwards is excellent.

After 3rd Reading: This book stands up to three readings. It is confirmed Janet Edwards is excellent.

After 4th Reading: So, so gooooood! As always a huge part of me just wanted to start the book again. The rest of me just couldn't wait to read the next book in the series which is even better!

After 5th Reading: Five times. Do I recommend this series? Obviously. This is now clearly confirmed as my go to series if I want something to grab me and suck me in. It still does that after five reads.

If there was one author that I would be comfortable in saying that you could read any book by them and you would love it  Janet Edwards would be it, you can pretty much be guaranteed a great read for anything she writes.
I am loving this series and am always glad to see a book or novella so I can visit the world, this one picks up after the first in the Hive Mind series and while it could be read as a stand alone you will enjoy it more if you have read the others in the series.  There is plenty of action, a little romance, as well as a mystery that will keep you guessing. This review was originally posted on Books In Brogan

When I first heard that Telepath is going to be a series, and after finishing the first book. I was like: How is she going to continue this story? Book one felt so finished.
Then I picked up this book and I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, I thought, this book and the third one are going to focus on the cases Amber needs to solve.
Eventhough I was slightly confused what this book is going to be about, but still, I was so pumped! Earth Girl is, and will forever (?) be my favourite book of all time, but Telepath is closely behind.

Oh boy, this book didn't disappoint. Not at all!
I was clued to my e-book readers screen and I just couldn't put it down. But a little disclaimer: There are events mentioned and people appear, that happened and were introduced in the novella "Perilous". So if you want to pick up this book and don't want to be confused, read the novella first.

This book follows Amber as she is send on a case, which turns out to be a bigger issue than firstly expected. Everything starts when she discovers the person who died, prior to her new case, is someone who she knows. Amber decides to catch her killer. But while investigating she discovers, that this persons death is part of something way bigger. Something so big, that threatens the entire Hive.

The whole story was super interesting, and just wouldn't let you go. It swollowed you whole. The story had twists and turns that you couldn't predict.
In my unbiased opinion *cough* I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a great sequel to Telepath. All of the characters continue to grow and develop along with Amber. The main plot is a roller coaster of a ride full of twists and turns while still keeping the signature element of humor. Amber and Lucas both reach critical points where they have to either rise to the challenge or collapse under the pressure of their jobs.

I love how Amber and Lucas both have to fight their own battles but they always support each other through them. There were some tear jerking moments in Defender. I deeply felt Amber’s fear, confusion, and determination. The introduction of Buzz and Sapphire as core characters really takes the series to a whole new level.

The exploration of borderline telepaths in comparison to true telepaths is intriguing but it was the whole concept of fragmentation that blew me away. It was utterly fascinating to see fragmentation portrayed as a form of multiple personality disorder. There were a couple of truly chilling moments.

I can’t get over the complexity of all of these different concepts and subplots all woven together into the main storyline. It seems like you should get lost in it but instead you get taken along on a dazzlingly mind boggling ride. The humor is brilliant, Eli and Spike’s comedy routine had me wheeze laughing. Another well rounded book.

I love all of Janet Edwards' work, and I have read this book multiple times. Somehoe it still grips me each time, pulling me back toit. The characters are compelling and complex, and feel so real you could imagine them as close friends. The world building and ongoing storytelling of this series is impeccable in my opinion.

The first book is a coming-of-age science fiction story featuring Amber when her telepathic abilities first manifest, so I was keen to see how Edwards would develop the story. I was also interested to discover if I liked Amber as much in this novel as I had in Telepath. Well, there were no worries there as Edwards is very good at writing engaging and positive young protagonists. The pacing is excellent and while I have read the first book, I don’t think anyone who hadn’t would have any difficulty in quickly getting involved in the story. So what about the crime aspect? As this is essentially a science-fiction whodunnit, the plot has to reflect that, with a suitably shocking crime and a tricky villain who is able to pose a real problem for someone who can read his mind.

I was impressed that Edwards managed to provide all these requirements with a fast paced, tight-knit storyline that once it took off, made it difficult for me to put the Kindle down. I also very much enjoyed how Amber is jeopardised by the very process of reading minds. This nicely upped the stakes both for herself and her team, which really mattered because I have grown to like the group of people who support and protect her. As she tries to grapple with this situation without sinking into permanent mental confusion, we also gain some intriguing insights into the rest of the world. I really appreciated being able to meet another telepath and it was reassuring to discover there is a high price to possessing such a talent, which gives the story a harder edge, which I appreciated.

The final denouement was suitably thrilling and once I reached it, there was no way I could stop reading before discovering how it all went down – I was already aware that Edwards is quite capable of killing one of her supporting characters, so I was fully invested in the story and genuinely concerned on behalf of the team. If you enjoy your crime with a futuristic twist, I highly recommend this series and while you can read this book as a stand-alone, I do think it would be a shame to miss out on Telepath goodness.

This time, it's personal.

No, but seriously, I like that the second book in this series makes the story so personal to our Unit, it really ups the tension. And there were a lot of little things in here that I would have loved to be expanded on for an already long book. (My edition is over 500 pages and it could have easily been a hundred or two more than that and I wouldn't have minded.)

Adore most of the characters, though I do wish more attention was given to some of them, and I really, really love the bonds in the story. There's a solid reliance and affection in this Unit and it's so awesome to see.

Still love the world building, like the fact that there is some refreshers in the story to the first book. It does get a little draggy at times because of that - and because I just reread the first one last month - but too many books don't offer you anything to remind you who the characters are or what the world building is like that I won't complain about the info-dumpy-ness of some of it.

Finally, there is at least some mention of LGBT+ characters. Not enough, but the first book had none and at least I now know they exist in this future.

(Side note: I'm still not fully convinced about the method of choosing the Strike Team and are straight people really that uncomfortable around their own gender? Probably the only things that dropped it from a 5 star rating for me.)

Apropos of nothing, how profoundly creepy would it be for everyone to be able to look at you surrounded by 20 dyed-to-look-identical dudes and know exactly what your type was?

Anyway. In this book, there's been a murder, and will be more. Crisis of the faith abounds for everyone, but they pull it together to eventually figure out what is going on.

I started reading book three when I finished this one, and by the time I started writing this I had managed to completely forget how they managed to solve the case. It was a bit messy down there. But at any rate, it continues to be a weird combo of relaxing and oddly not.

Weak

The writing isn't bad, but the characters are weak. The whole book the main character is pampered and worried about. I understand why, but it gets annoying and she feeds into it. One mishap and even her lead guy is ready to break down. My other issue is why can't 40 people take down one person. Even in current times it would be nothing to take down a single man with some intelligence. If we knew what he planned it would be crazy stupid easy to stop him, yet they struggle to do that. Where are the security cameras? It make no sense not to have a high tech detection system when there main goal is to relieve pressure on there telepaths. Also you learn nothing of the other hives and there is little to no power progression.

The last book had elements of a ‘Mystery’, but this one is very much a ‘Mystery’. Normally the Telepath just goes out and finds the guilty party, but this is more like a criminal investigation, this made the book even more interesting.
However there were a few areas that were mildly irritating. Repeating information that had been repeatedly covered in the first book Telepath. Perhaps because I read this book straight after Telepath I found this more annoying than I should have done.
The other concern, is given their resources, how much of a meal they make of taking down one person, but I still really enjoyed the story.

The first book was good, but I got really into this one. Several times I was reading and picturing everything happening in my head so vividly that when I looked up, being suddenly reintroduced to the real world was quite jarring! The book is fast-paced in many areas, and some of the scenes don't let up for even a moment, leaving you catching your breath. More of the characters' backstories are shown, and they really start to come alive.

Five stars. The series is awesome. I truly love the Earth Girl series, maybe a little bit more than what would be considered normal haha, and it took me a long time to get into this series, but I'm really glad I did!

I'm enjoying this series set in a post-apocalyptic earth where all civilization lives in one of several hives so structured that everyone is happy in their perfect job and with their perfect mate. Since that's an impossibility, there are teams of people who sniff out and prevent trouble. In Defender they and the telepath that heads the team use their many talents to stop a plot that will destroy the hive and the millions of people within it.

There’s something special in Janet Edwards writing that I just can’t quite figure out. I’ve loved every book I’ve read and crave the next. Strong female lead characters are empowering but they also have weaknesses that a reader can relate to. Earth Girl remains my favourite series, but Hive Mind is very close behind. I would recommend reading the series in order due to character relationships developing but not 100% necessary to follow along. Can’t wait for a new book.

Second part of the series. Despite reminders / repetitions - definitely not to be read alone or in reverse order.

To cut a long story short, I enjoyed "Defender", but found it less compelling than "Telepath". The first book was simply fascinating, almost all about world building and character development. "Defender" was focused on solving a mystery. It read more like an adventure book. Still, a nice continuation :).

Amber can come across as a Mary Sue. She has a special power. She is surrounded by people who are conditioned to love her. She is genuinely kind-hearted. Somehow, though, the author makes her likeable and not "goody-goody."

The story is good and develops well. The twists are reasonable. The ending is well-done.

Fast paced and enjoyable. I looked forward to coming back to this book every evening, till the last two or so chapters which I found a little too heavy on strategy talk.
