In the breathtaking tradition of The Last of the Mohicans...

MacKinnon's Rangers

They were a band of brothers, their loyalty to one another forged by hardship and battle, the bond between these Highland warriors, rugged colonials, and fierce Native Americans stronger even than blood ties.

Though forced to fight for the hated British, Morgan MacKinnon would no more betray the men he leads than slit his own throat—not even when he was captured by the French and threatened with an agonizing death by fire at the hands of their Abenaki allies. Only the look of innocent longing in the eyes of a convent-bred French lass could make him question his vow to escape and return to the Rangers. And soon the sweet passion he awoke in Amalie had him cursing the war that forced him to choose between upholding his honor and pledging himself to the woman he loves.

I'd like to begin this review by listing some reasons that Morgan is a Hero to Die For:

1)Gorgeous, sexy, virile, delicious, with long dark hair and dark blue eyes, and a big, hard-muscled body. (Swoon).
2)He's an immensely capable warrior, a much-loved leader to his men.
3)His unimpeachable sense of honor, even when it put his life in jeopardy.
4)The gentle, loving way he treated Amalie.
5)The fact that he wasn't going to let anything stand between Amalie and him.

Aah!!! Okay, I admit that Iain is still my favorite, but Morgan is a close second. I don't understand how Pamela Clare managed to tap into the well-spring of what makes a completely unforgettable hero, and so well, yet again. But she did.

Untamed is the second book in this series, and it thoroughly immersed me into this period of American history that I was frankly never that excited about. With these books, I feel completely drawn in. I loved how she presented this war between Britain and France, with the Native tribes on both side as more than just a martial conflict, but shows us the personal sides of this war. In Untamed, we get to see the French viewpoint. I remember being a little more favorably inclined towards the French when I learned about this period, because they were able to live in peace with the Native tribes more than the British; more tolerant of their differences, and often intermarrying. Yet, Surrender forced me to be on the side of the British, because I cared about MacKinnon's Rangers and people like Anne, who becomes Iain's wife. Ms. Clare deftly manages to turn things around as she shows what life is like for Amalie, whose father is a French military officer. We see how painful it is for Amalie to see the French soldiers wounded and dying. We come to like some of them, and I was hoping that I wouldn't see them come in conflict against Morgan and his men. I liked how this story played out. We know in our minds that they will face each other again, at least in theory, but we don't have to see this up close and personal. And Morgan and Amalie get their happy ending, despite all the significant obstacles in their way.

The love story between Morgan and Amalie was both sweet and steamy. From its inception, there is a powerful bond that grows between this innocent young woman who is grieving her lost father, and the doomed prisoner she is called to nurse back to health so he can be handed over to the Abenaki, a tribe who is allied to the French, to be burned in their horrible fires (the manner in which they torture and kill their enemies). As a devout Catholic, Amalie hates the thought of this man suffering. She knows that he could have been the one who killed her father in battle, yet she cannot bring herself to hate him. If anything, it's hard not to desire and fall in love with this vital, beautiful man who she has nursed so diligently. Morgan knew he was in dire straits when he was captured by the French. He can only hope for a quick death, and dreads being burned by the Abenaki. He also fears that he will unwittingly give the secrets of his band of soldiers away as they torture him. He's determined to die with honor, protecting his brothers and men. He didn't expect to see a sweet angel watching over him. And certainly didn't plan to fall in love with her, but he did. It makes things so much worse in a sense, for she calls to him to abandon all he stands for to be with her. And that's easier than it seems, or it would be, if Morgan wasn't honor-bound to his commitment to fight for the British by the blackmail that his commander Wentworth holds over his head. In this book, we see a strong, honorable man who is struggling to do the right thing. And I never lost faith that Morgan would hold true to his principles. Even when things get really hard for him.

Untamed is different from Surrender in that there are more quiet moments between Morgan and Amalie, where their courtship progresses and grows. It is somewhat suspenseful, rather than featuring lots of overt action sequences, as Morgan is forced to maintain his facade as a Scot who takes his rightful place with his Catholic brethren, the French, even though his heart still holds true to his loyalty to his men and his brothers. I feared the aftermath as he surely would be declared a traitor by the British. There are some real knuckle-biting moments as this book unfolds.

It was great to see Iain and Annie, happily married, though mourning their lost brother, Morgan; Connor, Joseph, the other Rangers, and yes, Wentworth. That sly devil has wormed his way deeper into my heart. I can't wait for him to meet a woman who shows him the error of his ways. Each book shows deeper layers to him that make me very desirous for him to get his own story.

This book was wonderfully executed, and I enjoyed it very much. I long for romantic adventures that show me snapshots of the past, through the eyes of people who might have lived and loved during those times. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical romance with intrigue and adventure, and sweet, yet sensual love stories between characters who you cannot help but love and root for their happy ending together.

Re-read/listened to audiobook May'2022:

Still a big 5 star read!

Original rating/review Oct'2010:

5+ stars – Colonial American/Frontier Historical Romance

WOW! I don’t know how I can possibly do this book justice with a review, but I’ll try to at least convey what makes it so astounding. As irrevocably moved as I was by Surrender, I loved Untamed just as much, if not more. It’s utterly enthralling...I simply couldn’t put it down and never wanted it to end.

The MacKinnon’s Rangers is an amazing series with an exciting, perfect combination of history, action, drama, and sensual romance that’s uniquely set during the French and Indian War with rich, well-crafted characters that are impossible not to love, especially its unforgettable, to die for, swoon-worthy heroes.

I adored Amalie and admired her humility, guilelessness, giving nature, gentle strength, compassionate heart, and courageous spirit. She was the perfect match for Morgan, and I found her complete trust in him and genuine devotion, through passion and peril, both touching and inspiring.

And Morgan? Good gawd, there just aren’t enough adjectives in the dictionary to adequately encompass what a wonderful hero he is. Sexy, strong, caring, brave, loyal, gentle, protective, honorable, patient, a tender, skilled, and sensitive lover, and willing to sacrifice himself in a heartbeat for those he loves.

I’m mega crazy about Iain, but I’m madly in love with Morgan, too. I don’t think I can choose between them, so I’d rather just be in the middle of a MacKinnon sandwich. And I have no doubt I’ll love Connor’s story just as much.

With a rugged, majestic, dangerous frontier setting, captivating, complex characters, intense emotions, and touching, lushly sensual romance between a lovable heroine and a to die for, sigh-inducing hero, Untamed is a powerful, unforgettable, and heartrending story that will stay with you long after it’s over. The MacKinnon’s Rangers hold a special place on my keeper shelf. Big 5, swoonalicious stars!

Here’s my MacKinnon casting choice ’cause I think he could play Iain or Morgan quite deliciously.

Hard to believe it’s been over a decade, and a thousand books later, since I first read this wonderful book by Pamela Clare. I also feel exactly the same as I did when I first wrote this review...I adored it!
I listened to audible version for the first time. It’s very well read and preformed.

Huge 5+ stars.

I honestly didn't think I would like Untamed, the second book in Pamela Clare's MacKinnon's Rangers trilogy, as much as I liked the first book Surrender. Boy, was I wrong!

Once again, Pamela Clare took me on an exciting journey filled with adventure, suspense, and intrigue, coupled with a beautiful and passionate romance.  I can easily say that everything I look for in an historical romance is in this book. Excellent writing, a tight and riveting plot, lovable and engaging characters, and a passionate love story.

Morgan's story, Untamed, picks up where Iain story, Surrender, ends. Where Iain's story focused more on action, adventure, and survival, Morgan's story focuses on one of the grayer aspects of life-loyalty.

During a scouting expedition, Morgan, now Captain of the Rangers, is seriously wounded and captured by the French, while saving one of his men.

Monsieur de Bourlamaque, commander of a French garrison (fort), gives the order that Morgan's life is to be saved for interrogation and then given to their allies, the Abenaki Indians, to be put to death by fire. Ouch!

Morgan is nursed back to health by the sweet, naive, bashful, and wonderfully benevolent (try as she might, she just can't remain resentful) Amalie Chauvenet. She is the daughter of a French officer who was killed by one of Rangers during the battle at Fort Carillon. Uh-oh! It isn't long, however, before affection develops between the two. Amalie, pleading for Morgan's life, suggests that the commander try to persuade Morgan to switch his allegiance to the French.  After all, he is the grandson of an exiled Jacobite and is being forced to fight for the British crown. There in lies Morgan's dilemma-to whom will he give his allegiance-to his brothers and the Rangers or to the French commander he admire and the woman he loves.

I truly love this couple. They are hands down my favorite romance couple to date. The love story between Morgan and Amelie is beautifully woven together with an abundance of tenderness, forgiveness, understanding, friendship, generosity, acceptance, respect, appreciation, romance, and steamy hot passion. There's a genuine and amorous feel to their relationship that radiates off the pages. It's obvious these two genuinely like and admire each other.  I couldn't get enough of them.

I adore and admire Amalie's character. She's wonderfully written and perfect for Morgan's character. Having been raised in a convent most of her life, she brought an essence of naiveté and innocence to Morgan's life when he needed it most. Amalie possesses one of the truest, most compassionate and guileless hearts I've read, while bearing an inner strength made of steel. Her courage, determination, faithfulness, and loyalty is awe-inspiring. Amalie's character has impressed me like no other female protagonist has.

Morgan. He's just all kinds of wonderful. I may even like him a bit more than Iain.  Gee-whiz, did I just say that? How can I honestly pick favorites between these two wonderful brothers? For some reason, though, I just can't seem to delete my statement about Morgan.

Untamed is a sensuous, powerful and gripping love story with admirable, likable, and compelling characters. It's the embodiment of the saying, "love can conquer all."

I highly recommend this book.

Fantabulous romance! Riveting suspense. Original storyline with unique plot twists. A hero (and heroine) you'll fall in love with. Many tear-jerking moments. Smokin' hot love scenes. Beautifully satisfying epilogue. A book that just leaves you wanting MORE! Can you tell I adored it? How often does a historical romance actually make you search out a history book to read more about the life and time period of the story you've just read? I found myself actually looking for reference books detailing the time period of the French and Indian War, that's how captivated I was by this second book in Pamela Clare's MacKinnon's Rangers Trilogy. And anyone who read the first book of the trilogy, "Surrender", and didn't possibly think that the author could equal or exceed that story, let me tell you in my opinion, I think she did at LEAST equal that wonderful book.

This story revolves around Morgan, the second of the three exiled Scottish MacKinnon brothers. Morgan now commands the Rangers, a group of highly skilled, largely colonial frontiersmen who fight alongside the British soldiers against the French and their Indian allies. While battling the French at their fort near Ticonderoga in upstate New York, Morgan is shot, captured, and feared dead while trying to save the life of one of his fellow Rangers. He's taken to the fort with the French hoping he will live, so they can torture the British war secrets out of him. Then they will turn him over to their allies, the Abenaki Indians, who want to see him dead for his part in the attack on one of their villages. Of course the Abenaki just don't want to kill him, they want to burn him alive at the stake. Gruesome stuff. Morgan knows what fate awaits him, and does his best NOT to survive. There's no way he'd ever give up secrets to the French, as that would harm his brothers and fellow Rangers. And he'd just as soon not die at the stake, so he wills himself not to live. But he does not count on the determination of a beautiful young French lass who cares for his wounds, and who later comes to care for him.

Beautiful 17 year old Amalie Chauvenet, born to a French officer and an Abenaki Indian mother, never had a real home or family. Convent raised since the death of her mother when she was just a baby, and only recently reunited with her father, she is a true innocent in every sense of the word. Recently reunited with her father, she's come to love and respect him, but she's tired of being told what she must do without anyone asking her opinion. If only someone would actually listen to her--she would love to be able to talk with someone rather than being talked TO. When she first sees Morgan MacKinnon, almost a year has passed since her father's tragic death in a previous battle with the British. She's now a ward of her father's friend and current third in command, Chevalier de Bourlamaque. Bourlamaque wants to set her up with a French officer for a husband, but Amalie has no feelings for the man he's chosen. If she doesn't soon choose a husband, Bourlamaque has plans to send her back to the abbey, where she can devote her life to Christ. She's almost resigned to a life back at the abbey, until she spends time tending to Major Morgan MacKinnon. Mon dieu! What a fine speciman of a man--and he's kind, mannerly, honorable, and he actually is interested in her thoughts! And even though he may be directly responsible for the death of her father, she cannot hate him. And he certainly doesn't deserve to die at the stake at the hands of the Abenaki. If only there was something she could do...

Well, at the eleventh hour, Amalie convinces Bourlamaque to let Morgan live, but what Morgan has to do is almost not worth his life to him. He's caught between a rock and a hard place, but he does what he must in order to survive. And maybe one day, if he plays his cards right, he can escape...and make his way back to his brothers and fellow Rangers. But can he leave Amalie, who he's grown to cherish more than any other woman in his life? Can there ever be a future for the two of them?

This story had me on edge from the time Morgan was captured by the French, up to the time he was about to make his escape. Would he take Amalie with him? Would he be deemed a traitor by the British? Would he ever see his brothers again? Would he be a wanted man for the rest of his life? All these questions and more were answered, and it made for one emotional read. Although this story had quite a historical background, including real and fictional characters and places, it was mainly a love story in all respects; Morgan's love for his brothers and family, love for his Rangers, there was even some love (okay, more like extreme respect) for the French commander Bourlamaque, but mostly his love for a young woman who grew up before our eyes, the beautiful and brave Amalie.

The love between Morgan and Amalie was filled with sexual tension, and almost-there moments, that leave the reader breathless with anticipation. And when they finally consummate their love near a waterfall in the forrest...whew...molten hot passion ensues!

Once again, there's lots of little Scottish words and phrases used--my favorites being "a leannan" (Morgan's term of endearment for Amalie), his declaration of love--"My love lies upon you", and my favorite curse word, "Och! Satan's arse!"

On a side note, I would love to see the young British General, William Wentworth, get a woman of his own. I'm getting tired of him coveting the MacKinnons' women! He is a tricky devil, and though he's proven that he's not all bad (he is a complicated man), this guy needs a woman that will put him in his place. I hope Pamela Clare has plans to write a story about him. Hopefully he will not try to poach whoever will become Connor's (the third brother) woman in the next book!

If you love your historicals action packed, but not short-changed on the love story, "Untamed" is the perfect book for you. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll be deeply satisfied at the conclusion but you'll be ready to read more about these brave Scotsmen. A highly recommended 5 stars!

Opening Line: “Major Morgan Mackinnon lay on his belly, looking down from the summit of Rattlesnake Mountain to the French fort at Ticonderoga below.”

Och lassies, Pamela Clare has done it again. Tis no fair, I dinnae ken i twas possible for her to top the sheer bonnie-ness of Surrender (I’ll stop now) or that she could possibly create another hero capable of capturing my heart the way Iain did (yes Iain of the hundred lashes Iain) but then I hadn’t properly met his brother Morgan yet either and damn if this brave, sexy Mackinnon brother hasn’t also stolen my heart.

Yes, Untamed is equally as good as the first book and in some ways I suppose even better because I’m now more familiar with the Scottish brogue and also have a better understanding of the French/British war being fought in the Colonies of 1759. This book was also interesting on a personal level because I have family in French Canada so I enjoyed reading the heroine Amalie's Français and some of the history as to why my country is bilingual. As others have mentioned this also sent me on a historical search (which a romance novel has never done before) to learn more about the battle of Trois Rivières and the time period in general.

There isn’t a whole lot I can add about this amazing series as I’m a little late to the party and there are already so many great reviews out there. All the praise is worthy though; Pamela Clare is simply an amazing writer, giving us characters that you won’t be able to let go of. The romance here is just perfect; sweet, passionate (hello waterfall sex), tear jerking and sighworthy. What a fantastic couple. In fact I loved everything about this; the suspense, the humour, the language, the history, the secondary characters (Joseph, Connor, Iain & Annie, the Rangers and even William) I was also never certain where this story was going to go, jeez the choices Morgan was forced to make, eventually becoming the enemy of both the French and the English.

Untamed starts shorty after Surrender and sees Scottish warrior Morgan MacKinnon still reluctantly fighting for the English. Upon his brother’s release Morgan is now in command of the Rangers and in the opening chapter we join him in the midst of a horrific battle, which see’s our boy gravely wounded and taken hostage by the French. His loyal Rangers assume he’s dead (or soon will be) and are so moved by his final heroics that they write a ballad in his honor (Loved it)

Incapacitated, Morgan is shackled to a bed where the French plan to interrogate him before turning him over to the Abenaki -who will then burn him alive for crimes against their people. It’s not looking very good for ole Morgan. Bearing two festering musket holes he wills himself to die rather then turn traitor on his men or burn at the stake, but it’s not going to be that easy. Enter his nursemaid, sweet, innocent, young and beautiful Amalie. Raised in a convent and now upon the death of her father (at the hands of British) the ward of Chevalier de Bourlamaque who will either see her returning to the nunnery and marrying god or one of his chosen French officers. Amalie however has other plans and has decided that this man must live.

“Morgan fought the urge to touch her, crossed his arms over his chest.
“You have no’ answered my question, lass. Why are you here? And dinnae tell me it’s the summer heat that brings you, for ‘tis hot in my bed too.”
She looked away again, distress on her face. ”I…I needed…”
“Needed what?” He knew the answer, but he wanted to hear it from her.
When she spoke, her words were but a whisper “I needed to be…near you.”

The MacKinnon brothers story started in Surrender continues with Morgan’s story in Untamed.

Morgan MacKinnon takes over as captain of MacKinnon’s Rangers after his older brother Iain is allowed to leave the service and return to the family farm with his wife Annie and their son. Morgan gets captured by the French at Fort Ticonderoga after he is gravely injured while helping save the life of one of his men. The French intend to try to save his life so he can be interrogated then given to the Abenaki. The Abenaki want to torture and kill Morgan in retaliation for a harsh attack against an Abenaki village known for killing British citizens.

Amalie Chauvenet came to Fort Ticonderoga (Fort Carillon to the French) to be near her father who is a French officer. She is part Abenaki on her mother’s side but does not know much about her Abenaki heritage because her mother died while she was young and her father sent her to be raised in a convent. Amalie’s father is killed in the Battle of Ticonderoga by a Ranger sniper but she remains at the fort afterward because it was too dangerous to go back to the convent.

Amalie is asked to help care for Morgan in the infirmary because they are afraid the French soldiers would try to harm him. Amalie resents Morgan at first because her father was killed by a Ranger like him but she quickly comes to admire his honesty and integrity. Amalie and Morgan come to know and respect each other while he heals. They both fight the fierce attraction between them because they know Morgan is bound for death from the French or Abenaki as soon as he is healed.

Desperate to save Morgan’s life, Amalie convinces the fort commander to give Morgan the choice to fight for the French instead of being killed since he is a fellow Catholic who was forced to serve in the British army against his will. Morgan does not want to betray his fellow Rangers and brother Connor, but decides to pretend to join the French army to find out as much information as possible before he escapes. Morgan is forced to play a desperate game with his life on the line if he is found out, while fighting his strong attraction to Amalie as he does not want to hurt her when he leaves.

Morgan and Amalie’s love story is full of action and adventure and is quite a fun ride. Their romance was very sweet and passionate. Morgan manages to survive some harrowing situations with the help and love of Amalie, who shows a lot of courage and compassion in her actions. I loved catching up with Iain and Annie and am looking forward to Connor’s story. I highly recommend reading Surrender before this book because it sets up the story line and introduces the wonderful MacKinnon brothers.

2012 --Wonderful reading it for the second time, cried like a baby at the end! Heart melting, intense, and steamy -- what a perect kind of romance. Now let's bring on Connor's story!!!

----------

2008--- Read it yesterday and absolutely loved it. It's the sequel to Clare's book `Surrender' and tells Morgan's story, the middle of three MacKinnon brothers. In short, it is an incredibly compelling, heart moving story that at times makes you feel as if a happy ending is simply impossible.

The romance between Morgan and Amelia was touching and beautiful, and in true Pamela Clare style, it became very sensual as the story evolves. Highly recommended! Can't wait for Connor's story!!!

`Untamed' takes place in 1759 in the American frontier, a time when the French and British were fighting for American land. Both sides enlist the help of American Indians, thus also pitting Indians against Indians. This isn't a story that takes sides with either the French or the British, but tells a story of what can happen to those caught in the middle.

Background: The MacKinnon brothers were exiled from Scotland in their youth, raised in America with their parents in the rugged frontier, and befriended the Mohican Indian tribe. These brothers are trained as both Scottish and Indian warriors, with skills that surpass any army on either side of the war. Through deceptive means, the British force the three brothers to form an elite fighting group known as MacKinnion Rangers and fight on their behalf. They are feared and renowned among both sides.

If you haven't read `Surrender', I would recommend reading it first just to give you more of the background that set this series into motion. But the story itself is a stand alone and there is plenty of back-story provided to help fill you in where needed. Enjoy!

This is the 2nd installment of the MacKinnon's Rangers trilogy and was every bit as good as the 1st, if not better!

In this story, loyalties are tested and we learn that not everything is as it seems.

The characters are people I care about and the storyline is, once again, unique to the Highlander genre.

Untamed is a fast paced, funny and sexy read!

I really liked this story. Morgan and Amalie are great leads, even though I sometimes worried she was going to become TSTL or mewling. She didn't. She reasoned things out and came to correct conclusions almost every time. And had incredible faith in Morgan.

Usually I know pretty much how a story is going to work itself out. There may be a few surprises here and there, but mostly I know the path it's going to go. I really didn't know what was going to happen next with this, and yet, every part of the story was organic. One thing led logically to the next, even though I couldn't predict each step. It was nice to see that, since romance writers often think they're 'changing things up' when they add in bizarre plot twists. Often the most believable thing can still be surprising and it's always the most satisfying.

I liked revisiting the other characters. Connor, Wentworth, Iain, Annie, Joseph, the Rangers. My one complaint is that Clare doesn't seem to have written any more of this series, and I'm needing more. Grrr.

In any case, I'm glad I took my fellow readers' advice and started reading Pamela Clare's excellent books. I'm going to keep going, and hoping for the next installment in the MacKinnon saga because there are several stories still to be told.

I definitely recommend Clare for people who want a refreshing historical with plenty of adventure and a bit of intrigue. I will read her contemporaries as well since they are also highly recommended by my fellow booklovers. I don't expect to be disappointed.

Reviewed for queuemyreview.com; book release Dec08

Want to know a secret? My least favored romance genre is historic American. Why? I have no idea! I’ve wondered about it time and again, but still haven’t been able to figure it out…they just don’t ‘send’ me. I say this as an explanation for why I was a bit worried about reviewing “Untamed”, but with Pamela Clare as the author, I really should have known better than to be concerned. She managed to make even my least favorite genre exciting and interesting.

Amalie is a mixed blood child of a French father and half-blood Abenaki Indian mother. When she was just two her mother’s died and her father sent her to a convent where she’s spent the last 16 years. After only a few months with her father at the fort where he served in the French army, he was killed in battle. Now she’s alone and under pressure to marry but none of the men have caught her eye…until an injured enemy is brought under her care.

Morgan MacKinnon is a warrior forced to fight for the British or hang…along with all his brothers. So they formed the MacKinnon Rangers and tales of their ferocity in battle have made them feared by their enemies. So when Morgan is injured and captured, he prefers to die rather than chance giving away any secrets that could cause harm to his brothers. Yet, it’s his nurse with her innocent, yet hungry eyes that somehow has him refusing to give in or give up. Now he’s caught between the woman he loves and the brothers he won’t abandon.

What a man! What an enduring love. Pamela Clare can pen some of the hottest, non-erotica love scenes I’ve read. And her characters seem to leap off the page and jump straight into my imagination where I have no problems seeing and recognizing them. Two characters stuck between two impossible choices yet willing to risk it all for love…now that’s a romance.

It would be easy to categorize this as a simple historical, but it’s more than that. The author probes into the prejudices and preferences of the times, nationalities, and players involved to provide a peek into stormy time in American history. I also found it fascinating that although it’s ‘American’ history, the main players are French and Scottish! The action is rough and tumble, just like life in those times, and the social mores are reflected in the attitudes of all the players. The story progresses smoothly and draws the reader in until you realize it’s almost over.

I’m glad I read “Untamed” by Pamela Clare. This story just cements Clare as an author who apparently can write just about anything and I’ll find it readable! This is the second book of a trilogy and I’ll likely end up reading the other two books just to see what happens to the rest of the MacKinnon’s. So if you like this genre…don’t miss this one. And if you’re not a big fan of American historicals, this one may just prove the exception.

Loved every minute.
Gripping suspense and adventure, thorough and captivating historical detail. Move over Outlander. Unforgettable characters. Morgan Mackinnon is a Hero of Heroes. This would make an A- mazing tv series.
...why are we not talking about these books???

I think i may have liked this one just a tiny bit more than the first book. I really liked Iain and Annie's love story from book one but there's just something about Morgan!! He was strong, courageous, sexy and soooo sweet with Amalie...not only did he display these qualities in his own book but we were reminded of everything he did in the first book for Annie...

'Twas Morgan who held me when Iain was flogged. 'Twas he who bought my weddin' gown. 'Twas he who sheltered me when Iain faced my accursed uncle in battle. ~sigh~...HE is what all heroes should aspire to be like!!

This storyline was also more suspenseful, i was actually worried about how things were going to work out for poor Morgan in the beginning, the middle AND the end!! So much happens and i LOVED how the other two MacKinnon brothers (and Joseph of course) helped Morgan out in the end..even Wentworth! *gasp and shock!*

Moving right along to book 3, Connor MacKinnon's book. It seems to be the fan favorite, fingers crossed that i'll be jumping on that band wagon! :)

4 Delicious ☆☆☆☆

I really adored Morgan. He has to be one of the best heroes in Scottish HR🤭. I really liked his character from book one and his book only made me love him more.

Amalie was a great woman for him, though, not amazing. Not from my pov. I wish I could have seen more of her, more of her dedication to their relationship. Yes, she was strong and helped him a lot, but I can’t pin point exactly what was lacking. But something was definitely lacking and I wasn't able to fully love her.

But the whole story was full of action, intrigue and I was drawn to it and finished it in one go.

I declare myself a Morgan fanatic. 😁😍

I didn't enjoy this one as much as "Surrender" (book #1 in this series). The characters weren't as compelling and it dragged in places. Having said that, the author did a nice job changing the plot around for Morgan (brother #2). Having him captured by the French and held prisoner, how he met Amalie, courted her, etc was vastly different from the first book. Kudos!

However, the characters just did not hold my interest and I was upset with how the plot unraveled. I did not care for the ending--at all--and though the epilogue straightened it out, it was not done in a way that had me sighing or smiling. I was grumbling.

Something odd happened after chapter 30 and I hate that this author stops important scenes then jumps ahead (but you have to read carefully to catch the time that unraveled), then explains what had happened earlier as a thought of a character or conversation. I also despise the reiteration of events that has plagued this authors historical books. I think it is wasted ink to recap what happened even if it is through a conversation or a characters thoughts.

I did not care for William Wentworth in this one and hope that he gets a life of his own in lieu of getting the hots for each girl the brothers find. There was hardly any steam in this one! The wedding night was completely skipped forward to flashback. Ack!

After reading Surrender, the first book in Pamela Clare's MacKinnon's Rangers series, I quite honestly fell completely and hopelessly in love with the MacKinnon brothers. I thought Iain from Surrender was amazing and he and his brothers stole my heart and I knew from the start that I was lost to them! Morgan, the brother featured in Untamed, was just as to-die-for as Iain and his book was just as spectacular, if not even more brilliant than the first!!! 5 big stars (but in my head I'm giving it 10)!!!

I felt such a connection with the characters that Pamela Clare has created that from the very first sentence I could see them, picture the scenery and hear the sounds of war. She paints such vivid pictures without being over wordy or narration heavy. These characters became very real to me and I came to love them as I'm sure she did as she was writing about them. Thank you, Pamela, for sharing what was figments of your imagination and making them so very life-like! I actually did not have a lot of time to devote to reading this book, and it took me nearly a week to finish it, but not because it was boring or poorly written, I just had everyday normal life going on (don't you hate it when that happens?). But during the times that I wasn't reading this book I was able to think about it and it just became that much more special to me.

Morgan was honorable and swoon-worthy, Amalie was brilliant and clever, Connor was adorable (in a really hot warrior kind of way!), and Wentworth once again surprised me and became more intriguing to me. And of course we spent some time with Iain and his wife, Annie.. they are such a dear, sweet couple. Another character worth mentioning is Amalie's guardian, Bourlamaque-- I loved him and thought he was such a fine gentleman. I am sad that I have to wait for so long for Connor's story, I will miss these sexy and witty Scotsmen.. but I shall try to be a brave lass for it would make the MacKinnon's so proud!

I recommend that all of my friends read this series... read them in order, first Surrender then Untamed, you will not be disappointed!

Pamela Clare is by far one of the brightest stars in the romance firmament. Every single thing a reader could want is contained in each one of her books, and "Untamed" is the perfect example.

Do you like realistic historical? Clare envelopes true, sometimes gritty historical facts, events and people in a fictional story so deftly that one doesn't even realize there is learning taking place. Do you like strong characters that stay true to the nature written? Her characters are some of the most superbly crafted, well fleshed out and completely real people in literature of any genre. How about nail biting suspense? It comes in spades, the edge of your seat, can't put down until it's over kind. Are you one who likes the romance hot and steamy? Clare's scenes burn right off the page but with the (hallelujah!) added bonus of real love and emotions propelling them. T

The relationships are honest, deep and richly loving. Even the bad guys are written so well you understand them, even as you are hating them. See? Perfection through and through. Every reader may have preferences - likes or dislikes concerning what they look for in a story (ie: the steam factor is a little strong for my personal comfort zone) but there isn't a reader alive that won't find a whole lot to love about "Untamed" and the MacKinnon Ranger series.

Reread- audiobook. Narration is fantastic and I still love this book to pieces. If you live adventure, American history and spicy protective highlanders, get this in your ear holes!

2nd book in the series is just as tightly plotted and developed as the first. Morgan, the middle brother, is captured by the French and thought dead by his family. Spy games and a sweet almost nun save his life. Marriage of convenience, big Highlander who's a fierce warrior but a big softie, size difference, excellent pacing and steam. Just a delight. I'd sell a kidney if I would get Pamela Clare to finish this series. I really want Lord Wentworth's book!

Untamed, the second in her MacKinnon Rangers trilogy continues soon after Surrender- the first in the series- left off. Morgan, Ian MacKinnon's younger brother (Surrender), is now leading the Rangers- that band of Scots and Irish warriors who have learned to make war like no other in the colonies before the establishment of the United States. A band impressed into service by the sneaky Wentworth- King George's grandson- to fight for the Brits during the French and Indian Wars, even though, as Scots, they should be fighting on the side of the French- their allies back home in Scotland.

During a battle over French held Fort Carillon- Fort Ticonderoga to you and me- Morgan is hurt and captured while staying back to help a wounded Ranger.

Amalie Chauvenet has been living at the Fort since before her father was killed in a previous battle. Now the ward of Bourlamaque, the Brigadier in charge, the last thing she wants is to be returned to the convent in which she was raised.

Making herself useful working in the infirmary, she is shocked when one of the rangers who killed her father is brought in- in chains. Of French and Indian blood (Abenaki), she has every reason to consider this man who fought so hard for the British, her enemy. But something draws her to him and she finds herself defending him from the brutal treatment of one particular officer, despite her feelings of anger and hatred.

When Morgan opens his eyes, he finds an angel watching over him. He quickly learns Amalie is indeed flesh and blood and when he discovers he and his men have been the cause of much misery in his life, he does something amazing. He asks her forgiveness.

Though Amalie knows she should hate him, she sees more honor in him then in some of the men in the fort. Confused, she attempts to work through her tangled feelings and eventually sees her way to forgive him.

As Morgan heals, they are drawn closer and closer together. When the time comes for him to be put to death- because he will not betray his brothers- Amalie can hardly have it. Thankfully, she hits on a scheme to keep him alive.

She asks her guardian to bring him to their side rather than execute him, as his worth as a warrior on the frontier and his knowledge of the movements of the British troops and rangers would prove invaluable.

Bourlamague, a gentleman not particularly fond of making war, likes the idea. When he discovers the Scottish Catholic Morgan never really wanted to serve with the Protestant British, he decides to give Morgan a chance.

Morgan, still not wanting to betray his brothers, but desperate to give them time to find him, agrees, thinking this is his chance to actually spy on the French and pass the information on to his leaders once he has escaped.

The one niggling problem in his plan? His growing love for Amalie.

She raises in him every protective instinct and soon he must reconcile what he feels for her with where his duties lie or be forced to never see her again.

Of course things become more complicated when Bourlamague discovers them in a passionate embrace and forces them to marry!

The rest of the story follows Amalie and Morgan through the fallout of his time with the French- because they do escape- and ends leaving the reader with no doubt of their passion for each other.

I loved this couple. From the moment they realized there was an affection between them, they did little to deny it- though they both fought it for the other person's sake. Once again- a refreshing change. Because this time, the author kept the tension not by making the protags argumentative and pouty- "I want him, but I shouldn't"- but by keeping them apart for noble and plausible reasons- outside themselves.

(Hey, I guess Shakespeare had it right, even way back then!)

Sensual romance, action and adventure in a wonderful setting, Untamed is pure escapist reading at its best! If you love historical romance it is one NOT TO BE MISSED!

A heartwarming wonderful historical romance, 4 1/2 Huge Stars.

This series belongs to the very best. Every time I opened this second book in the series, I realized I love everything in it. The author, Pamela Clare, has given me wonderful main and second characters. I also enjoy to read the scottish/english speaking in the dialogue and of course all about the brave MacKinnon's Rangers.
 photo vguvk-1_zps752d29c4.gif

This book was about the bullet-wounded Scottish Morgan MacKinnon who is captured by French troops. In captivity he falls love of the beautiful French officer's daughter (whose mother was Abenaki Indian) Amalie Chauvenet. The story has many trips back and forth about loyalty to a combat unit, to various European nations and to different officers (I really like the the French officer Bourlamaque but now also the English officer Wentworth) in parallel with that is the fine and tender love story.
‘He was unable to take his gaze from her. She looked as fresh as springtime, her dark hair hanging in a braid beyond her hips, her eyes wide with surprise. Then her gaze moved over him, and he knew a moment of utter mortification.
She's thinkin' you look like a peacock, laddie.’

The story around the main story is interesting and engaging, and the description of the consequences of the war in 1750's in the new american nation among the European kings of France and England provide a good external frame. The love story is in the fine old tradition with a true brave hero (with sword) and a beautiful (virgin) young girl. It's tender, slightly steamy and hot with grand big love. Allways wonderfully described.
# Morgan, you are a true hero!
# Amalie, you are the sweetest
# Amelia, you got the dream guy. Luckely You!

I'm just saying; MacKinnon brothers -
admirable heroes and wonderful lovers.

Now I've read about Iain's and Morgan's errant ways to capture their women for life. Looking forward to follow the youngest brother Connor's story in the third book (Defiant).

I LIKE very, very much!

Astounding roman bien écrit! (Astounding well written novel)

Pamela Clare has done it once again! I loved the first novel she wrote in this series Surrender and this one "Untamed" is yet another enthralling story. I fell in love with Morgan MacKinnon, when reading the previous book continued to enjoy him even more in this novel. It's hard not to fall in love with these Scottish manly warriors.Let me just say, I’m a sucker for tortured hero's. Morgan definitely plays that role.Loyalty is what gets him in the mess he's in during this story, and Loyalty once again gets him out of it and sets him free.

More often than not, it is the heroines who manipulate situations in order to make their heroes admit their love. Actually, I guess this is one of the reasons that I love so many of Clare's heroes, they get all cute and cuddly when they fall for a woman, their warrior personas are forgotten and the passion and loving heats up.The attraction between the H/H Amelia and Morgan, is incredibly strong.Although Morgan is hesitant to love Amelia, because she is related to his enemy whom have captured him and wanted him tortured and hung,he sets it all aside when he sees for himself she is nothing like the Brutes who have no heart.Amelia is the reason why he still lives. They have chock full of chemistry, that was definitely filled with spiced passion, and plenty of romance. My heart, was fully involved in this story from beginning to end.

This was an engaging read, light, fast paced and let me not forget,it's capable of bringing a tear to the eye of readers with even the hardest of hearts.

I loved it and can't wait for the third book in this series to be released. The anticipation is killing me! LOL!

The intrigue was very well done and I liked the MCs and many of the side characters.
Taking place in the mid 1700's in New York state in the midst of the battle between France and England over the 'New World'. I am more familiar with the Canadian side of this time period, but my memories of elementary school history made this story more interesting to me.

Amelie is the sweet natured but intelligent daughter of a French Officer and his half-native bride. Orphaned she is left in a French fort under the guardianship of it's Commander. There she meets the enemy she will fall in love with.
Morgan is a fairminded highlander drafted into the war against his will. Forced to the side of the British, his sympathies lie with the French he must now battle. Captured and gravely wounded he ends up in Amelie's care.
Much of the story takes place in the French fort but eventually moves on.

I found I grew tired of the story by about 40% in. The author was forever monologuing in the character's heads. Where they dithered endlessly about their loyalties. Some of this is understandable as the MCs are placed in pretty morally awkward positions for the entire story. But it was wearing on me and I found myself fast forwarding a lot in the second half... and somehow still not missing any of the important plot points. Hmmm...

Safety is all good.
The reader; Kaleo Griffith (a man btw) does a wonderful job reading. Good accents etc.

“Tha móran ghràdh agam ort, dh’Amalaidh,” he whispered. My love lies upon you, Amalie.

Oui oui can I have your baguette monsieur morgan?🥖😜

He's the calm among the three MacKinnon brothers and perhaps the freakier too 🤣.
My emotions went through it all: shocked, rage, “now kiss” moment, tension wheww, swooning, rage, sad, rage, sad, heartwarming, happy.

This book depicted war scenes realistic as possible and sometimes the enemies could sympathize more than your ally.

Our main couple is a Rapunzouí x defiled scottish major. The h is an Indian-French lady who prided herself on showing her emotions through her face, positive-thinking, innocent, brave. Meanwhile Morgan had those second-sibling vibes, total communication king (not one of those prolonged ignoring types, he just gets around it quickly).

“Morgan.” She whispered his Christian name, savoring the feel of it on her tongue, then repeated it, trying to say it as he said it, with the quick, rolling R. “Morgan. Morgan MacKinnon.”
And she knew for certain she did not wish to return to the abbey.

I love how this had the betrayal, showing the turmoil in his heart, the heartfelt showing emotions between them, stealing kisses and glimpses just like what a forbidden relationship looks like in a movies.

“Let me free you from this need, Amalie.”
But she had one last question. “Is this…a sin?”
“I’m certain the priests would say that it is. And yet holdin’ you in my arms like this—all I ken is how right it feels.”

AND another The Rangers brotherhood moment like aghhhhh. Let’s not forget the backbone of the Rangers, aka Joseph. He’s truly my favorite character—the epitome of “I’ll always be there when you need me most.”

I’m in love with the Rangers just like I love the Avengers. Chemistry? Yes. Funny? Yes. #Brotherhood? Big yes.

The MacKinnon brothers are known as fierce warriors and great strategists. In the previous book, we learned they've been wrongly accused of murder by the English commander's master plan to force them to serve the British Crown.

Untamed is Morgan's story, the second son, and in my opinion, the most loyal and caring. You can guess I really loved this hero ;p Morgan was taken prisoner by the French and serious injured. The leader wants him alive to obtain informations about the enemy. When the choice for Morgan is between an horrible death or betray his compatriots, what will he pick ? But soon he'll have a new element to take into consideration : Amalie, the pretty half-breed (half-French, half-Abenaki) who treated his injuries and read to him.

Like I said in my previous review from this serie, I'm full of contradiction. I don't like reading about violence but I can't deny that the realism this author put in her books is also a part of her great skills at storytelling. I've always been a fan of the nurse/soldier trope but I find it interesting and original to see it being set during the French and Indian War. And I remember the great surprise I had the first time I read this book to see mention of Québec and Trois-Rivières and reference to the Batailles des Plaines d'Abraham. Of course, because I'm a Québécoise but also because this war is a pretty important part of our history and also because when have you ever read a romance novel written by an American who talk about a part of the French's history ? Only in Pamela Clare's books we can see these unique stories.

But it's also because of her talent at creating good characters that she's one of my favorite authors. Even knowing Morgan might be responsible for her father's death, Amali didn't want him to suffer and never let hate enter her heart nor corrupt her mind. She was kindness and compassion but that she can understand that's it's war, not a person, who killed her father showed her strength of character. I was also touched by the hero's perceptiveness and charmed by how he was passionated but always tender. It's a sweet feeling to realize the heroine gave him hope, that he saw her as the only light in the darkness and pain he suffered when he was a prisoner. They quickly developed affection for each other and it felt so natural. Amali finally found a man who listen to her opinion.

More than a romance novel, this book is also an adventure novel with history as the backdrop.

Another wonderful story that I couldn't put it down

After reading two books from MacKinnon's Ranger series, I'm asking myself.."Why did it take me so long to read her books?" I never thought I would love her books. Frankly speaking, her previous cover art make me turn off to read it. Again, I'm wrong. She is a wonderful storyteller.

I loved everything about this book! The author makes you feel as if you were there.

Strongly recommended.

This is good follow up. However, due to the fact that I read Surrender and Untamed back to back, I can't help but noticed some similarities, especially a few dialogues and phrases that were spoken between both the H/h. This also make a lesser impact to me than Surrender because it lack momentous scene. There were a couple of scene from Surrender that etched in my mind, but Untamed didn't have that. Nonetheless, Morgan still deserve a 4 stars. I think is unfair that I keep comparing him to his elder brother. I shall wait a few weeks before reading Connor's book.

I've read all of Pamela Clare's contemporary books. she is one of my favorite authors. I don't read much Historical-Romance these days, but this one is really, really great. I am a history buff and the way this author immerses you in the conflict known as the French-Indian War is amazing. History, romance and suspense make a great recipe for a wonderful book.

The MacKinnon brothers have been conscripted into service to fight for the British. If not for the threat of hanging, they would never have joined this war. Along with their Indian friends they have crafted a formidable fighting force, MacKinnon's Rangers.

Major Morgan MacKinnon is now the leader of the Rangers and takes his position very seriously. When he is captured by the French saving the life of one of his men, he is told that his likely fate will be an agonizing death by fire at the hands of the Abenaki, after the French are done torturing him for any intelligence he has.

Amalie Chauvenet is the ward of the French Commander and has been told to tend to Major MacKinnon's wounds so he may recover and give up his secrets. As a gently bred convent girl, she is distressed to have been ordered to nurse him back to health only to have him tortured and killed.

When Morgan recovers, Amalie goes to the Commander with a plan that will save Morgan and soon the passion between these two has Morgan cursing this war and testing his honor.
