Kindra M. Austin is the author of the novel, Magpie in August. Constant Muses, Austin’s debut book of poetry and prose, is a tribute to those who inspire her—most notably, her late mother. "We served enormous club sammiches made on freshly baked French bread yesterday at your memorial luncheon. The deli at your favorite grocery store had prepared the tasty beauties, and I know you would have been impressed. I cut the sammiches with great precision, like you would have done, providing equally sized portions. Seriously, Mom. I was hyper-focused. Because putting all of my attention into minute details that no one else would have given one good goddamn about, was far easier than watching our family and friends walk through the doors with cards, and pathetically arranged faces."
I couldn't put this book down! It touched me in some very hard to reach places, as I'm sure it would touch anyone. Kindra reads universally, and it's clear that she has an abundance of very unique talent. This is a rare quality. You won't be able to put this book down, it'll make you feel like a teen reading your first favorite poems again
I had read one of Kindra Austins novels prior to reading this and again, I didn't know what to expect, other than the flawless, naturalistic and immediacy provoking writing style she is known for. This indie author is fast cutting a pathway to the hip corner of mainstream with her edgy, emotive, highly real and gutsy writing that in all forms, is compelling, addictive and often shocking. If you want to read something you won't put down until you are done, if you want to read something that couldn't bore you if you tried, if you want to read something original and profound, if such things even exist anymore, then look no further. I find Austin's work to be among the best in terms of her provoking, renting, penetrating gaze at humanity and love and what makes us tick, what makes us die and who we leave behind. I won't spoil the incredible story within, suffice to say, if you read this book you'll be buying Austin's entire collection of work the day you finish it. Highly recommended.
I've been a fan of Kindra Austin's poetry for some time now and am so happy to have a collection of her poetry in book form. She speaks from the heart with powerful words that will pierce your soul. If you love poetry you need to a) buy this book and b) follow her blog on wordpress.
