Forbidden Caress: The Warrior and the Woman

Rate this book

“One of the best romantic and exciting novels I have read!!”—Shirley, Goodreads

The unforgettable frontier love story of the warrior who kidnaps a young English lady in the colonies and she finds ecstasy in his tender savage touch.

Katelyn Locke sets sail to America, her heart singing about her new life to be as a bride. She beholds America’s virgin shores with wonder until her cowardly fiancé abandons her in the forest when they are attacked by Indians. In the first moments she faces her captor in terror.

The warrior Night Fox reaches out and touches her cheek. What fool would leave a treasure like this behind? He is bewitched by his tribe’s newest captive. Her lustrous hair is red like the fox’s, her silky skin reminds hime of the yellow wildflower. He yearns to kiss the tears from her cheeks. He wants to taste the honey of her lips.

”I hate you,” Katelyn trembles so much she can barely get the words out.

”No, you don’t hate me. You fear me, but you don’t hate me.” Night Fox is so close. Katelyn has never heard a man’s husky whisper.

She meets his haunting black eyes without flinching. “Yes I do,” she lies. “I hate you because you kidnapped me, because you made your slave…” I hate you because I can’t despise you the way I should.

He senses her surrender to his forbidden caress. Fox pulls her close, savoring the warmth of her damp skin beneath his touch.

She trembles in his grasp, unable to tear her eyes from his. She remembers the taste of his mouth on hers. “I hate you because you touch me.”

“Do not be afraid.”

She lets herself be drawn into his arms. No one has ever tried to comfort her, no one has ever cared. Why this man, she wonders, as she bends his head towards her. Why the enemy?

This novel by the same author and set in the same setting as Captive but is less interesting. The daughter of an English reverent follows her fiance to the colonies. En route to his home he ransacked an Indian burial site and when the Indians attack him for doing that he leaves his fiancee behind and runs off. The fiancee is taken prisoner and the first half of the novel is spend on does he loves me or does he not and vice versa. What I found quite unbelievable is the idea to go and live all alone in a cabin while severely handicapped and with roaming hostile Indian tribes in the area. Safety in numbers and all. For an American romance novel it is kind of surprising to see gay people mentioned and a transsexual a revered friend and that in a novel written in the 1980ties. (By the way I have read years ago that transsexuality was not frowned upon amongst the Indian).

4 Stars. This was a very engaging read. The title gives away that the FMC is taken Captive. Instead of it being a Western themed Native American focus, this was set in the Northeast in earlier Colonial times which was a nice change from the usual. All of the characters I found to be unique and interesting. The plot was variable enough to hold interest without being too predictable. A great summer read!

He loves me he loves me not

The first half is all about does the other love me. Quite weird as she was happy to marry a white man not because of love and lovematches seemed not be common. I also do not understand why to choose to live all alone in a cabin in a dangerous area while handicapped.

Too many nick-names. The first half was decent, you knew he would regain his sight. The last half drug on FOREVER! Then after a whole winter of love, lust and pledges of love he believes she betrays him? Nah

This was almost an epic romance.

I really loved almost everything about this. The drama did get a bit ridiculous at times - Tipaakke gets the brunt of it, which was surprising - but it truly was a lovely story.

meh

I gave up. I can’t finish this. I’m not a fan of the story line or the relationship between the main characters. Honestly, I don’t like the FMC or most of the characters now that I think of it. It was painful to read for me.

I like that this book had a long, unpredictable plot. It just didn't really pull me in emotionally, otherwise I would've rated it higher.

Just too stupid to believe!

Assuming this isn't a comedy, I believe the words "just too stupid to believe" describes my opinion of this story.

Plot 4/5
Characters 4/5
Spice level 2/5

You can tell Colleen French took an incredible amount of time to research the indigenous Delaware peoples as well as the different tribes along the eastern shore. As an indigenous woman (eastern band of Cherokee) I was overjoyed to see the native representation within her book. I adored the trans woman character (remember this was written in 1986!) and although some of the language was a bit dated, it did not diminish the love I felt for the characters or the story line. Very well written character arcs and a few classic 80’s spicy scenes.

Trigger warnings: kidnapping, slavery, indentured servitude, loss of a wife, loss of a child, attempted rape, burning down of a house, torture of prisoners, disease (small pox), murder, arranged marriage, purity culture, pregnancy, loss of sight, pedophilia (implied sex between a white man & young stable boy), colonization, sexual content, racial slurs, gun violence.
