Betting on horses is a guilty pleasure for me and this book helped me to lose a little less at the track.....I guess that's success?

An update and expansion on Beyer's theories and speed-figure calculation for handicapping thoroughbred racing. Amusing, easy to follow. Valuable in the 1980s and early 1990s. Unfortunately, those who were willing to do the work no longer have an advantage, as Beyer Speed Figures now are calculated and printed in the Daily Racing Form. Four stars would be the value 30 years ago. I have passed on my copy.

Read most of Beyer’s books many years ago. This reread was both nostalgic and still a great refresher, even after all these years.

Kind of wish I'd read "Picking Winners" first, as this one is really a defense of the methods he described in that book. But a good and surprisingly entertaining read - Beyer's an excellent handicapper but he's also a very good writer.

Good stories about Beyer's journey in developing a method to handicap thoroughbred race horses but outdated. Book teaches a complicated system for developing speed ratings for race horses. Outdated because these speed numbers are readily available in the Daily Racing Form.
