Cortland Carter, a desperate and out of work computer programmer, is hired by quirky scientist Dr. Napolis. The Doctor claims he will change the world. How? He's developed a machine that allows him to travel to parallel universes and is also on the brink of time travel. He convinces Cortland to join up at a private science lab under a false identity to steal their research on particle physics for his project to be complete. Cortland is reluctant, but who could pass up being involved in such world changing technology? At Quantum Physics Research Center, Cortland falls for physicist Lora Lacy. He's never clicked so well with any woman before. Cortland must now decide if he will go through with the theft and the betrayal. And if he does, what plans does this odd doctor have with this new technology? Cortland will soon find out what his desperation has led to and the consequences it may have for the multiverse and the integrity of his world’s timeline.

Mixing corporate espionage into the science fiction thriller “Barrier Rip” opens with Cortland Carter an out-of-work programmer hired by Dr. Napolis an enigmatic genius who can time travel in his machine through a wormhole across multiple universes. In his new job he agrees to apply for a position at Quantum Research Centre (QPRC) in Cheyenne, Wyoming under an assumed name so he can steal their innovative particle physics research for the doctor. What he doesn’t expect is to be bothered by a conscience that questions Dr. Napolis’s motive for the theft, to get along with his coworkers and to fall for lovely physicist Dr. Lora Lacy.

The story heats up after the theft as Courtland suffers the loss of the woman he’s fallen for; the doctor cuts him out of time travelling to his world; and in his drunken stupor he discovers Dr. Napolis’s devious plan which not only has severe repercussions for the Earth but the multiverse. Well-developed and told from Courtland Carter’s perspective for most of the story, intensity and suspense escalate when he travels to Napolis’s world, confronting an angry, betrayed Lora, and uncovering the history of the Lightning Program. Fast-paced and exciting when he joins the resistance fighters on the planet and is chased by Napolis’s guards, the plot progresses smoothly to an explosive climax that includes not one but three epilogues.

Thirty-nine-year-old Cortland Carter (aka Carter Bold) a clever and hardworking programmer is a resourceful and crafty scify nerd who discovers that Dr. Napolis the scientist he trusted enough to carry out his plan to steal research from the QPRC is deceitful, cold, and single-minded in his sinister scheme. Lora Lacy is the green-eyed beauty Cortland falls for. An intelligent and serious physicist she’s amiable, outgoing but stubborn when betrayed, tracking Cortland to the lab in Boulder. The characters are realistic and compelling, growing with a plot that has multiple twists and turns.

I thoroughly enjoyed “Barrier Rip” and can’t wait to see where Brian Delaney takes this fascinating concept next.

My review is of a copy of this book won from Goodreads. Entertaining story that holds the readers interest. I kind of wondered how Napolis got the cash to pay Cortland? And it would have been an interesting offshoot, or perhaps an interesting addition to the story line, to either include an explanation of what ended up happening to Dr. Napolis' son - or maybe weave his son back into the later part of the story somehow. I admit I got lost in the middle of all the time and multiverse travels that took place at the end of the story. Overall I really enjoyed this book.
