Cait is a homalus, a mixture of human and demon and takes brimstone at her local church to suppress her demon side. In exchange she has to help an exorcist, Simon, to locate other demons, in the inner city of Glasgow. If she slacks off or doesn’t turn up when requested, they can withhold her necessary drug and leave her struggling with the worst ever withdrawal and changing into her demon self.
Cait is responsible for her younger sister and has Social Services checking up on her, making life difficult. She is late for her job and they are called out to a crime scene with supernatural elements. A young girl has been brutally killed. Simon quickly makes up his mind that it was vampires, but Cait isn’t quite so sure. She has to sneak about, work fast and risk everything to investigate who was responsible for the murder. She then finds they are coming after her sister!
This is a short story, but it packs quite a lot into just a few pages. The main characters are well described and Cait is an independent young lady with a lot of responsibility at such a young age. Talk of keeping her demon side under control could be compared to normal humans keeping good over evil. Bring in demons, vampires, Templars and exorcists and you have a strange mix of characters to the story. Some parts are not what you might expect from any other stories containing these characters.
It was a good read, I rather liked it and look forward to reading the short story prequel that is linked in at the end of the story. I received an ARC copy of the book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
