A young girl’s been brutally murdered.

Experienced exorcist, Father Simon, thinks it’s the work of vampires, but his Demon Hunter trainee Cait Murphy thinks he’s got it wrong.

Worse, Cait’s part demon.

And the only way she can stay human, and keep social services from taking her young sister away, is for Simon to inject her daily with the addictive drug Brimstone, so, you know, the girl’s got problems.

But she also has a lead; an ancient ring was left at the murder scene and Cait sensed a taint of demon on it. But as the ring slowly gives up its secrets, Cait’s life starts falling apart. She goes behind Simon’s back, puts her friends in danger, and her sister goes missing.

Can Cait find the demon before another life is lost? And can she find her sister before the authorities turn up at her front door?

Second read from 19th Feb - 23 Feb.

Oh ..... I'm in love with Cait Murphy!

Demons is the debut novelette of Ellis Everley/Ellen South centering around the life of Cait Murphy, an Irish born, Glasgow living girl who is half-demon. She has been taken under the wing of Father Simon, an exorcist, to be trained as a demon hunter. It's a hard and brutal life for Cait who is really still a teen and is responsible for the care of her younger sister as well as coming to terms with her darker self and beginning her training for hunting demons. On top of all that, she's an addict ...... she must take a hit of Brimstone every 18 hours to hold her demon side at bay.
This part of the series (yes, there's 4 .... with another season to come!) deals with a case of the murder of a young teen and a demonic ring found at the site of her murder. Will Father Simon and her find out who the victim is and what the importance of the ring is? Just who are the sword wielding men trying to find the ring ...... and why are they so interested in Cait's sister? Seeking answers Cait wonders what would happen if she gives in to the demon inside her ..... and just who is the man who comes to her aid? Can he be trusted?
There's a lot of action packed into this book and it totally has me hanging for more! Because it is serialised I'd recommend getting the whole season as a box set (quite cheap), otherwise you might be left hanging for answers at the end of the first "episode". This was quite well written and the characters are exciting and draw you in, my only complaint is that the prose didn't flow as smoothly changing from one scene to the next. I have read the prequel and it's a lot smoother so I'm hoping it's just a case of the writer finding her rhythm. I have downloaded the rest of the series and can't wait to start on them!
I'd heartily recommend this for YA lovers and those who love their demon hunting genre with a kick-arse heroine, albeit a little green.

This is a short story. I enjoyed the main character and hope to learn more as the series unfolds. The other characters need more development but in a short story I suppose you don't have time. The story grabbed me right away and moved along at a good pace. The ending had me going "Ahhhh". It leaves you at a place full of questions and the need to keep reading. I really recommend this series, it is different than most of the paranormal books I have read.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I don't think this book was long enough to really appreciate the characters. Cait seemed like a pretty incompetent demon tracker and an even more incompetent junkie. I realize it's a serial but Cait was just too much.
Other than Cait it was a pretty cool concept.

Cait is a homalus, a mixture of human and demon and takes brimstone at her local church to suppress her demon side. In exchange she has to help an exorcist, Simon, to locate other demons, in the inner city of Glasgow. If she slacks off or doesn’t turn up when requested, they can withhold her necessary drug and leave her struggling with the worst ever withdrawal and changing into her demon self.

Cait is responsible for her younger sister and has Social Services checking up on her, making life difficult. She is late for her job and they are called out to a crime scene with supernatural elements. A young girl has been brutally killed. Simon quickly makes up his mind that it was vampires, but Cait isn’t quite so sure. She has to sneak about, work fast and risk everything to investigate who was responsible for the murder. She then finds they are coming after her sister!

This is a short story, but it packs quite a lot into just a few pages. The main characters are well described and Cait is an independent young lady with a lot of responsibility at such a young age. Talk of keeping her demon side under control could be compared to normal humans keeping good over evil. Bring in demons, vampires, Templars and exorcists and you have a strange mix of characters to the story. Some parts are not what you might expect from any other stories containing these characters.

It was a good read, I rather liked it and look forward to reading the short story prequel that is linked in at the end of the story. I received an ARC copy of the book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Let me start by saying that I really like Cait as the unlikely heroine of this serial. She's the right mix of imperfect, tough yet vulnerable, hard-hitting and straight talking character for me. I think some of the other characters have the same potential, but this particular installment of the serial was a little short to properly delve into their personalities.

The plot of the book is pretty riveting and kept me turning the pages and the action is more or less non-stop... maybe at times a little too non-stop as it didn't give a lot of room for world building which is what this book lacked for me. The writing is of good quality and the author clearly has the ideas of what the rules etc are governing the world she's made, but it's not laid out for the reader.

Overall I certainly did like the book (enough to want to read the other parts of the serial and the prequel). But I do hope that the rest manages to give more world detail and secondary character development than this installment did.

Note: This is most definitely Part One of a serial novel and as such there is no plot resolution and it does end on a cliffhanger. Also I received a free copy and have chosen to leave a review.

This is the first episode in the supernatural detective story. We are following Cait, a 19 year old girl with demon traits who is helping the priests. In exchange, she gets a drug, Brimstone, to keep her demon side at bay.
The main character Cait is quiet a rough type, she likes swearing and doesn't really give a lot about authority. But she is very protective about her younger sister Neve.
Cait isn't your average heroine, she is more like a junkie on heroin. But we can see some good intentions in her and in time, I think I am going to like her. The book ends with a mysterious man showing up. I would like to see some more of him and also the other characters like Dan and Simon.

I requested a copy of this book for review purposes

I received an ARC of this story through Hidden Gems and this is my honest and voluntary review.
I have to say, when I read the description for this one, I must have glossed over it being a novella, I wasn't ready for it to be over so fast! That being said, this was a great start to the series, I only wish it had been longer. I really enjoyed Cait's character and the author's take on being (part) demon with the addictive brimstone drug. I always feel a little cheated with novellas because there just isn't enough time in the book to really fill out a worl and the characters in it. This was a great story, but I hope the further books in the series can really add more to this world, the characters in it, and their backgrounds!

I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a free copy from Hidden Gems.

I haven't read too many short stories, but this was an okay, quick read. It was really easy to see everything play out in my head since the imagery was well-written. Although, I wish there was more world building, because I was very curious on HOW the existence of these demon/angel genes happened as well as how other supernatural creatures are able to roam the earth in this book's world.

As a forewarning, this book is interesting but incredibly gory so be prepared.

rcvd a copy for giving my two cents. um...not too sure what to think. we meet half demon Cait who needs brimstone from turning full demon and on top of that shes taking care of her younger sister. a brutal murder happened and her boss the exorcist and her go to the gory scene of the crime. only thing was blood and a devered finger with a ring. cait needs to know what going on and that includes a little B & E. what she didnt plan in was those who were supposed to help the church and her sister.

This is an enjoyable series broken up into easily-read "episodes". The main character, Cait, is on a journey of discovery and the series throws all kinds of nasty things her way. Enjoying it quite a bit.

My only complaint is I wish the author would make better use of paragraphs to make it easier to read. As currently formatted, it is sometimes confusing when one character's dialog is immediately followed by another character's actions and it's not clear this change in focus has taken place.

This is a quick and easy PNR read to launch a new series. The storyline is well-written, short, witty, suspenseful, and intriguing. The main character is defined, strong, reckless and awesome. This was a surprise treat and I enjoyed it very much. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.

I wish this was longer. There just wasn't enough character and world building for me to get invested completely. The story is a good one and I was captivated but I wanted more. I hope the next book is longer with more depth

So while I liked the idea of the book, it just fell short for me. I understand this is part 1 in a 4 part serial, but I just felt as though we were missing key information.

Very short but good story! I really like the characters that this novella introduced. I want to know more about all of them, especially the vampire! Looking forward to reading more in this series.

Interesting idea. Not sure if I will read the other parts of this little series but it was a fast read and entertaining for what it is.

Demons, Vampires and some bloody brimstone

Demon is the first Cait Murphy book. She's a demon masquerading as a demon hunter. And she's addicted to brimstone. But when her sister is caught up in a Templar prophecy she's forced to get off the drugs, embrace her inner demon and solve a brutal mystery.

"Demon" is strong, witty and an enjoyable read. Everett's tone is strong and her characters come to life. Even when they're almost dead...
