This book was a really fun read for me! The characters are original, quirky and likeable. The pace of the story was good; I was never bored. The main character was just adorable!! Lea struggled to find her own identity throughout the story. Some of the scrapes she got into had me laughing so hard my mouth hurt at times and tears flowed. Lea is fiercely loyal to her friends, but somehow she always seems to find herself in trouble. She’s such a scrappy little thing! I just wish I could adopt her!! This book is sassy and funny and sure to make your heart sing!
Laylea is a fun character and a free spirit in a way. This book was fun to listen to. I enjoyed the Narrator. The story was very fun too with a dog who lives as a girl sometimes. Wyrdos is a new thing for me but the story kept me listening. I had some great laughs in this book so that was the best part for me. *This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.*
I had requested and received audiobook version of this book for free from the author+narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.
This is an Urban YA Fantasy book written mostly for young audiences. But if you love the genre, you will love this book, no matter what age you are. This is the first book I've read from Gwendolyn Druyor and I loved it. I'm amazed at the secret world she has built in this book and the characters she has created for it. The story started a tad slowly, but once it got going and established a comfortable pace, it was a very fun read.
The book is also narrated by the author herself. That rarely works well. But thankfully in this book, it does. The narration is beautiful and all characters are voiced perfectly.
My review is based on the Audiobook but I also own the e-book. Laylea is a shifter and this book follows her journey. I found this story captivating from the start. It is a fast and enjoyable read that I had a hard time putting down. The reader is introduced to numerous characters and uncommon paranormal creatures that are amazing and fun to learn about. The author does a fantastic job of world building and describing the environment and characters. The narrator did a superb job of bringing the story and character to life. I am completely invested in Laylea's story and am excited to see where the author takes us in the next book.
Laylea is a werecanid and has spent most of her life as a dog instead of a human girl. Shifters have to stay hidden from the human world. Laylea has been taught that she can’t shifter in front of humans but she can’t control her shifting. When she is caught shifting in front of humans Captain Morioka sends her to the Shifter School so that she can learn to control her shifting. Laylea has never been to school nor has she ever had any friends her own age before.
When she arrives at the school she soon learns that more is going on at the school than just teaching. Experiments are being performed on the students and their information is being sold or given to an outside source for further testing. Laylea and her new friends, Oscar and KC all do a little investigation on their own to find out what is going on at the school and why they are testing the students and what they plan on doing with them when they get the information they are looking for.
Can Laylea and her new friends figure out what is happening to all the students before it is too late? Can they stop them from harming the students? Is the shifter school really a school or is it a prison for kids?
Shifter School is a great introduction to the Wyrdos Universe or it was for me as this is the first book in the Wyrdos Universe that I have read and I enjoyed it tremendously and can’t wait to read more by this author and to see more into this universe/world.
I would recommend Shifter School to anyone who likes to read about shifters, vampires, witches and maybe a few more paranormal creatures with a little mystery on the side and a great new world.
This story is terrible and makes no sense. Why would all of them try to escape the school all the time let alone pay to be there.
They sell their students to medical experiments and the students even bullies should not what to be in this prison and yet some pay to be there.
Beginning was ok and I do like laylea, but storyline pretends this is a school—-and a prison - yes I know that was in summary, but then why is KC desperate to be here and why do other students pay to be here…
There are few books that I cannot finish, and this was one of them. I found this book to be one of the dullest books I've downloaded recently. The writing style is sloppy and unimaginative, with flat two-dimensional characters, no showing (only telling), and poor grammar.
I won't force myself to read any more of this author's work. Life is far too short for that kind of torture.
This book was unique and riveting and should not be missed. Gwendolyn Druyor's imaginative take on the world of shifters is original and refreshingly different, and I loved every minute of it, and can't wait for the next book to see what's next in this series.
The beginning was a little rough to get into but the rest of the book is well worth it. The story is fantastic and I can't wait to read more from this author.
Such a fun read! Moves quickly through the story but not enough to get lost. Great characters. I will definitely keep going with this series and this author!
