It’s been ten years since he set foot on home soil. Three, since his family and friends were left grieving for a death that never came.

Fighting for one’s country, bearing witness to the atrocities of war has left former Sergeant Theo Lowell as a shell of a broken man.

Now that he’s back, it’s time to make a life for himself. If only he agreed with everyone’s assessment that he was deserving of it. After all, no one but him knew of the sins he’d committed.

Instead of rebuilding himself into a man ready for a family, friendship and happiness, he sets forth to do some rebuilding of another kind.  After all, if one deems himself helpless, why not be helpful?

When he knocks on Morgan Smyth’s door, the last thing he expects is that rebuilding what is currently before him would prove to be such a daunting task.

Two hearts—emotional baggage—multiple wars are waged as a home takes shape.

Funny how redemption can be found at the tip of a screwdriver, the head of a hammer, or better yet, when hit by a two-by-four!

Right OMG!!! this book I really can not say enough good things about it.
So my expectations were not very high when I started this, first I don't read much romantic suspense and second, this author is an unknown for me.
Well, let me tell you Carey Decevito has blown me away with "Night Shift" I couldn't put this down, Simply stunning.
So on to my review, So this was my first book by the talented Carey Decevito and I would classify Night Shift as belonging to the romantic suspense genre.
The basic gist here is that Shane Peters a cop is on the hunt for a serial killer.
A killer that eight years ago murdered his wife leaving him a grieving widower with a baby daughter.
Ever since the killer has been murdering two women a year lookalikes to Shanes dead wife.
Shane knows its personal and is determined to apprehend the sadistic monster that stole his life.
Over the street to Shane lives Emberlyn a gorgeous sassy blonde with secrets and haunted eyes.
With Shane's little girl an avid fan of his neighbour, he himself starts to take a keen interest and it's not long before the two begin to fall, but with both their pasts gunning for them it's not long before events start to convene into one big clusterfuck.
So that's the condensed version of this enthralling story.
The story itself has no big twists in regards to plotlines but that really doesn't matter as this story and the emotion it conveys grab you by the throat instantly.
The main characters themselves are extremely likeable and the love story that slowly emerges is just beautiful in its simplicity.
I don't usually like dead perfect wife tropes, but it really didn't bother me with Night Shift maybe because the author manages to convey the intimacy and sentiments between Shane, Emberlyn and the little girl Rosie so perfectly.
I am just in love with this adorable little family.
I'm not really going to delve into the actual plot much as you can read that for yourself.
But I will just say, give this a go, I'm highly confident you won't be bored.
This story flowed brilliantly with plenty of action and had all the ingredients to keep its reader hooked to the very end.
I was provided with an ARC of Night Shift (Nightshade Book 2) by Carey Decevitoof which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

I knew what I was getting myself into when I read the blurb so this wasn't a surprise.
I love single parent trope but I hate dead exes trope but for some reason in this book that did not bother me maybe because I never felt that the heroine was second best.
Yes he loved his dead wife and at some point he referred to her as My Eva but I was able to move past it.

They know of each other for 2 years or she has been his neighbor for 2 years and he has never noticed her until his daughter became friends with her, he dated, yes he has slept with OWs but the heroine hasn't seen him with OWs and she wasn't pining after him so this did not bother me.

He was a good hero and a good father. A bit of a jerk in the beginning but I like a hero that sees that he was wrong and apologize right away.

I liked the heroine's relationship with his daughter and I liked the little girl.

I'll said this though... I wish for authors stop writing how the heroine thinks she's a slut just because she enjoys sex or just because she's going to have sex with the hero with no strings attached. I haven't ever read a hero referring himself as a manwhore because he's sleeping with a woman or because he enjoys sex. So yeah No woman is a slut just because she enjoys sex. Sorry to burst your bubble authors. This needs to stop, I'm tired of reading this.

No OW.
Cute kid.
Possessive and protective hero.
Good heroine.

a stalker/serial killer bad guy.... (and a pov to give your skin the itchy-crawlies)
a hot-cop single father.... (and the bossiness, possessiveness, protectiveness, gentleness, and swoony-presence that goes hand in had with him)
a darlin' little girl... (and she steals your heart!)
a sweet girl-next-door damsel.... (who has the inner strength to survive whatever's thrown at her, and yet the soft vulnerability that you just can't help but want to protect her)

I'm SO lovin' this story!!

I reached out to some friends, searching for a serial killer book and I'm so thankful when Night Shift was suggested to me!! Its got the bad-guy story line I was wanting, the kind of heroine and hero I adore, just scary enough to freak me out a little (but not leave me paranoid... maybe...), but yet it was an easy read to just truly enjoy!

Have you ever read a book soooo slowly because you didn’t want to reach the end since it meant the series was done? Stretched it out to three days when you typically can devour them in one? This was Theo’s book. I feel like I have been wanting his story ever since the first mention of Paxton’s brother in book one. Then he wasn’t mentioned again until book four when he mysteriously returns from the dead.

Oh Theo! Trying to get your life in order. Explaining your absence to your family, starting your own company, wanting to live a normal life with an HEA, assuming you are underserving because of your past in the military.

I just love how the author demonstrates the hero and heroine rising above their challenges. They have hurdles, but together they can overcome them.

Now as much as it saddened me that this series is done, Decevito has left us with a wonderful little nugget, a preview to her upcoming new series. We’ve met the characters at the end of A Heart’s War, and will witness their HEAs.

Shane Peters is a detective chasing a serial killer that seems to have it out for him. It all started with his wife, which left his life a living hell, and leaving him to raise his newborn daughter on his own. Now 8 years later, the death toll is up to 18, and he's no closer to solving the case. Emberlyn Roth has had to start all over again, and it hasn't been easy, but she's managed by the skin of her teeth. One of the bright spots has been her neighbors' daughter, who comes over to visit. When she finally meets the little girls father, Shane, she can't help her attraction, but with her past, she's not in any hurry to open up to him. It's not helping that she's getting mysterious packages herself, and doesn't know where to turn. As Emberlyn and Shane spend more time together, they find a connection that has feelings quickly developing, but when the killer sets his eyes on her, will Shane be able to keep her safe? This is the first time that I've read anything by the brilliant Carey Decevito, and I have been missing out! Night Shift kept me on the edge of my seat cover to cover with my heart racing! The twists and turns were around every corner, especially with more than one evil on the horizon, so I came up with new forms of f-bombs to drop! Shane & Emberlyn were awesome together, although at different times, both needed to be shaken for some of their stubbornness, but their sexy times lit the sheets up! And I couldn't get enough of the colorful cast of secondaries, especially the tiny human, who kept me laughing! This was a fantastic story filled with exciting suspense, with a side of angst, and I CANNOT WAIT to read more by this amazing author in the future! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Firstly, I’ll mention that I note other reviewers seem to have enjoyed this book more than I did, so my “it’s ok” rating perhaps speaks more of taste than quality.

Decevito has an idiosyncratic writing style, or rather, two such styles; one for suspense and the other for romance. I personally didn’t enjoy either of them very much; you, like other reviewers, might.

The “suspense” writing style relies heavily on a few things.

Short lines, indicating urgency.
Pauses. Shıt. More pauses.
Palpable tension that’s palpably tense.
Sweat trickling. Fuсk. Breathing.
Heart pounding.

For me, it felt like all the symptoms of tension being mentioned, without the tension. As a disclaimer, I’m naturally of very calm demeanour and not easily dislodged from that position, so again, this may be more to do with me than the book.

The “romance” writing style reads to me like “50 Shades of Grey”. I realise that’s a highly polarising statement; that book has sold many millions of copies and is also much criticised. For me, a comparison with such is not a compliment. Clearly, however, many love it.

To give an extract of the kind of writing I mean:

❝ “I-I…” She licked her lips, the tip of her tongue brushing my digits.
Nuzzling her nose with mine, I said with absolute certainty, “You want this, sweetheart.” I moved my hands back to the sides of her neck and very lightly brushed my lips against hers. “You want this as much as I do.” She leaned in as if expecting a kiss, but I held back, watching the attraction swell in her eyes before I went in for the kill. “Stop lying to me…to yourself, and put us both out of our misery. Just say yes.”
To prove my point further, I fused my mouth to hers, feeling her body shudder against mine as she gave in.
“I’ll go out with you,” she capitulated, shivering slightly as my hands rubbed up and down her back soothingly. ❞

In short, as Miss Jean Brodie would say, “for those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like”.

I’d obviously recommend the book to those for whom that is the sort of thing they like!

admit it. I am a cover junkie and this one 'got me'. I was expecting sizzle and that's exactly what I got. Some sizzle and a sweet romance. Combined with a thriller that kept me turning the pages.

I can easily say that Night Shift is a 5+ star page turner.

The characters are charming and delightful, hot (Shane and his co-workers) and just a little bit stubborn and opionated.

Emberlyne has been through a rough time. She's a big girl and wants to stand on her own.

Shane is a widower struggling with working way too much while trying to raise his darling daughter Lana Rose with the help of his wonderful mom. Mom is wise and dedicated to helping her son and grand daughter.

While Shane and Emberlyne become friends and then step over into a relationship Shane struggles with catching a serial killer
that ends up connecting with Emberlyne's ex to reck all kind of
havoc.

Night Shift is a page turner that kept me turning the pages and forgetting about the 'real' world.

There were some sub-characters that immediately caught my attention and I was delighted to see that Devolin and Dalton are the main characters in Book 1 of this series.

I am looking forward to reading Night Break 1 in the series.

I received a complimentary copy from Buoni Amici Press.

Even though this is book two in the series, it can be read as a stand alone.
In this story Shane is a police detective whose wife was murdered when his daughter was a baby. Her killer has been taunting him ever since. Murdering women who resemble his wife and leaving clues in the form of pieces of a picture.
Emberlyn is starting her life a new. Her ex husband went to jail for abuse and she has been moving and hiding since. For the past two years she has been living in her grandmother's house. Right across the street from the cutest little girl and her extremely hot cop father. When the cop asks her out she is happy but cautious. She hasn't dated since her divorce.
When Em starts getting strange gifts and she starts finding them in her home, she then begins to worry. Shane has figured out who the killer is but he can't find him. When things hit close to home he wonders who the next target is. It is a race against time and Shane could lose everything he loves. Can he find the killer before the clock runs out?
Man this book was full of excitement and thrills. It will have you on the edge of your seat. The characters are lovable and entertaining. The book is a fast paced read with several oh no moments. All the mystery of a thrilling drama with a dose of romance that is sweet and hot.

This is the second installment in the Nightshade Series, but can certainly be read as a standalone. Fans of the Night Break will catch a few glimpses of Devolin and Dalton, but the focus is most certainly on hot cop Shane.

Shane is a single Dad, having lost his wife eight years ago in a horrific murder. A murder that began a string of similar ones over the years, and provides him with the unwavering obsession to solve these crimes before more women’s lives are lost.

Because he spends so much time away from home, his daughter has taken a liking to the neighbor across the street. Did I neglect to mention that the neighbor is hot, single, and oh yeah, Shane certainly takes notice of his daughter’s newfound friend.

Emberlyn Roth has settled into a quiet norm for the past few years. After finally getting out of a dangerous and disastrous relationship, you’d think that getting involved with a cop and his family would preserve her safety. But somewhere in the shadows, lurks an evil waiting to pounce.

Can Shane guard those that mean most to him? Find out inside this page turner!

Oh my word!!! I don’t know how to describe what I just read. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time wondering what taught the murderer would do next. Shane is a police detective that whose wife was murdered and he is left raising their little girl. Shane is being taunted, the killer is murdering women that look like Shane’s dead wife and leaving clues. Emberlyn just can’t catch a break. Her ex-husband is in jail for abuse and she has been living in her grandmother’s house across the street from the most adorable little girl and her policeman father. With the friendship Rosie and Emberlyn form Shane just has to meet her and when he does there is an instant and strong attraction. Shane is thrilled to spend time with Rosie and Emberlyn but that makes the killer focus on Emberlyn. Will he be able to protect Emberlyn from the killer? Will Shane make his move from police detective to full-time Nightshade employee?

The suspense was killing me, I didn’t know if they were going to get together and live happily ever after or both of their stubborn streaks would win out. The story was full of witty banter and I had some moments where I was laughing out loud. I’m glad I took a chance on a new author to me.

This book is the second one in the Nightshade Series by Carey Decevito. It takes us on Shane Peters’ journey as he works to unmask the serial killer who killed his wife. As a detective on a local police force though, Peters needs to be careful that his personal search doesn’t interfere with his work.
The beginning lines of this book will instantly catch your attention and make you wonder what exactly is going on. Decevito’s suspenseful writing style will have you flipping through the pages quickly to figure out what will happen next. Peters is also a well-developed character and you’ll find yourself rooting for him to solve the murder.
If you enjoy suspense and thrillers you’ll definitely enjoy this book. It’s suspenseful, full of plot twists, and well-developed characters which makes it a very enjoyable read. There is some language in the book so if you’re not comfortable with that it might be best to find something else. However, this is a phenomenal book and one that all readers should definitely check out.

I love this author, suspense romance is always a go to and Carey Decevito knows how to write it. Shane Peters is a detective on the hunt for a serial killer. This serial killer seems to know Shane well. After losing his wife and becoming a single dad there is much determination to see this killer be caught. When Shane meets Emberlyn, things become more than either of them realize and Shane is on instant protect mode. The adventures this story takes you on, grabs your attention from start to finish! I cannot wait for more of this series!

Night Shift(Nightshade Book2) by Carey Decevito is a fast paced thriller with a touch of romance thrown in for good measure. Shane Peters is a detective with the Jacksonville police looking for a serial killer, and this one is personal. This killer murdered Shane's wife a little over eight years ago. Now the killer might hit yet again, and again it hits close to home. Shane develops feelings for his neighbor Ember in a roundabout way, namely through his daughter, who has befriended the single, divorced woman. When she invites danger into her door, the tension goes up a notch. This is a well written book with believable characters and a well plotted story that will play on your emotions. A good combination of thriller with some romance thrown in, Night Shift will keep you reading until the final pages. Highly recommend.

Night Shift is the second book in the Nightshade series. The story was intense, suspenseful, romantic, and the twists and turns kept me reading into the night. The characters were developed and likeable. Shane and Emberlyn had great chemistry. Lana Rose was so cute. Liked that past characters are in eachothers books. I really enjoyed this romantic suspense novel. The characters, especially the female characters, are so strong and compatible with the strong male. Shane is a single dad trying to find the serial killer that killed his wife eight years before. Emberlyn is the new neighbor that has befriended Shane's 9-year old daughter. Both characters have their sad history and the chance to heal together. Even though it is a part of a series, it stands well alone. Overall this book has plenty of suspense, good plot, likeable characters, and enough to make me ready to read more in this series.

The second installment of the Nightshade series proves as fast paced and sexy as book one. Shane is a single dad who thinks he works too much for the local police department and sucks as a father. Driven to solve the serial murders that began with his wife, and raise his daughter, Shane doesn't see the woman of his dreams across the street. That is until his daughter starts spending more time with the woman. While he is intrigued by Emberlyn, he doesn't know the secrets she hides from her past. When the path of the murderer and her past collide, sparks are ignited between Shane and Em. Ever the protector, Shane tries to keep the woman safe, while she fights the caveman within him. Add in an intuitive mother and a sweet little girl and you have the perfect mix of suspense, intrigue, and love. I love that Ms. Decevito updates the couple from the last book and pulls them into the action of this story. I look forward to the next book in this series.

I am always looking for new authors who write romantic suspense so when I saw Night Shift all over my feed a bit ago I went ahead and gave it a one-click. And am I glad I did because once I started reading, I could not put this down.

I really enjoyed that both the main characters had something going on. Something dangerous and sinister. I will say that I found the jump from virtual strangers to lovers in the short span that it happened seemed a bit out of character, at least for Emberlyn, it didn't keep me from rooting for her and Shane.

Oh that Shane. A man that wore man hats. Son. Protector. Father. Cop. And as the lines on all of those started to blur together, things with Em started to become that much more clear. Even when danger was lurking around every corner.

Night Shift was one twisty and thrilling ride. I can honestly say that I didn't see that last little shocker coming and it had me reading furiously to see just what would happen. Shane and Em's journey to put their past behind them and move forward towards the future was heart pounding and kept me guessing until the bitter end.

Night Shift (Nightshade Book 2) written by Carey Decevito is a wonderfully written is a romance mystery/suspense novel. The author does a terrific job of making the characters believable and realistic. I found that although the story line was fairly predictable at times, it was entertaining and really well written. The reader is taken along Shane Peters’ search to find a serial killer who has killed 18 people spanning an 8-year time frame. I liked how the author worked up to the romance and really laid a good foundation for the reader to want there to be more. I also enjoyed every aspect of this book, which was surprising as with most romance novels I find little bits here and there to criticize, but this one was really well thought out and very well written. This is the second in the series, and having not read the first, this one is a great stand alone. I look forward to reading more of Carey Decevito’s work.

This is a fast paced murder/mystery that have people stumped. This person ruined Shane's life years ago and now the killer is back again. Will his obsession ruin his chances with the new woman in his life? His daughter needs him too, but he's on the trail of the killer and he can't seem to stop himself. Danger, heat and a new beginning. HEA.

Light at the end of the Tunnel....

Carey Decevito has done it again!! This second book in the Night Shade series is just as amazing as the first book. I love Shane Peters, a cop, protector and loving single father to his spitfire of a daughter Rosie. Shane has been an empty emotional shell of a man since his wife Eva was murdered 8 years ago. He has been on a mission since to find her killer. There have been 18 other lives that have been taken since and the murderer does not seem to be slowing down. Shane has focused on his job, his daughter and his mom. He cannot seem to move forward with any permanent romantic relationships since his wife died.

His daughter strikes up a friendship with their neighbor. Emberlyn is gorgeous and he wonders how he has never noticed her before. They have an instant attraction to each other that stirs up lost feelings from both of them. Emberlyn had an abusive husband who is still stalking her even though they are now divorced. Shane and Emberlyn's personal tragedies collide when they seek out the murderer together as a team. The urgency to finally put this all to rest is strong as they both want and need to go forward in their lives.

This is a suspenseful and angsty story with lots of sizzle and steam between Shane and Emberlyn. I can't wait to see what comes next.

This is the story of Shane Peters a Detective with the JPD and who has been on the hunt for the serial killer who killed his wife eight years ago.
Shane has been working all hours to catch this killer and also moonlighting with Nightshade Securities, and it seems that the killer is back and another woman has been killed. And with all this Shane is bringing up his nine year old daughter Rosie who seems to have a new friendship with the neighbour Emberlyn Roth. When Shane and Emberlyn finally meet there is an instant attraction between them and they start spending more and more time together but the killer seems to have his eyes on Emberlyn now and this does not sit well with Shane .
Will they ever catch this killer? Will Shane make the final decision to join the Nightshade Securities on a permanent basis? Will Ember, Shane and Rose become a family?
I would recommend reading this as it is such a great story by Carey Decevito and I would also highly recommend reading the first book in the series as you will see some of the first book characters popping up in this second book.
Can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

This book here, had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I couldn't put it down.
Love Shane and how he loves his daughter. Love how Rosie is like her dad and will tell you like it is. A mini alpha female in the making.
There is always a female needing help! Emberlyn who is running from her past, trying her best to keep to herself has found a friend in a little girl. Roise is sweet, loving and once you're friends with her, you're family.
Shane who is a police detective and has been on a case for a very long time, has his hands full with his daughter and now his neighbor. A case that touched so close to home for him.
There were twists and turns that you didn't see coming. Like I said it had me on the edge of my seat. Who would've know that Emberlyn and Shane would be connected in more ways than one?
Great read, if you read the first book, you will see some of the characters in this book.
I would like to how the 3rd book plays out, who is the alpha male and the female he will be pursuing!!

I received this book from Voracious Readers for an honest review. This was a fun easy to read book. If it's your first foray into this genre it has enough suspense to keep you interested with no major plot twists. If you're a seasoned reader of this genre it's a super fun read with easily likeable characters. You care what happens to all of them even Grams. Could the characters have had more depth? Absoultely. But for what this is it is good. I did like the direction of the story and personally I would have enjoyed a big twist but alas it was not to be. It starts with a pretty big bang though with the murder of a nameless girl for a nameless reason. I think a bit more depth in the development of the motives for the killer would have enhanced the story. But that fall s under the whole character depth idea.

Great emotional read

I love how all 5 of these books highlight different professions and somehow they're all connected together. Military reads always tug at my heart. I couldn't imagine what these families go through when their loved ones leave but I balled like a baby when his parents got a huge surprise at his return. Love this author

I have actually met Carey at a signing and she is a sweet, genuine person and that carries over into her characters. I loved the tension between Shane and Ember as their story played out. There were some times that I wished the flow was a little more fluid or that the characters choices made a little more sense... But all in all, this was a great book!
