Cues, signals, codes. They are systems we use to communicate, but across cultures they can be so confusing! If you are living in or visiting a culture different from your own; your colleagues or staff come from various cultural backgrounds; or you have to deal with a domestic or international marketplace comprising people from various cultural backgrounds. then this book is for you!
A highly enjoyable read on breaking down the features of what makes up a "tribe" with corresponding examples from a range of cultures. A thorough exploration of the concept of intercultural awareness which I'd definitely recommend to everyone as our world becomes more and more globalised.
With seven languages and experience living in many cultures around the world Kerry O’Sullivan brings a wealth of knowledge down into a short but intensely rich volume. Beginning with very practical examples across a full mix of Asian, European, and Middle Eastern cultures - as well as variations between English, American and Australian variations of English-language cultures – this is not so much a text to read, as an experience to digest. The examples offered are followed by suggestions on how to broaden your own experience and understanding by looking around you for further examples and interpretations from the material. This makes the book a great discussion starter for classroom or community group situations. But it is more than most books on cultural awareness tend to be. The unique advantage of this particular “practical handbook” is that it does not favour one particular culture with the attitude of assimilating all others to its dominance. Each language is presented as having a unique offering of understanding and viewpoint. Each culture is presented as more than the language through which we experience it. Set out in a very clear style, covering descriptions and examples as well as skills and observation checklists, it is an easy reference guide for continual enlightenment and skill development. Personally I found it a little difficult following the analytical section, but even here the examples aid understanding through persistence. Highly recommended to anyone wanting to improve their communication skills, even within their own cultural community.
