2021 PopSuagr Reading Challenege A book by an author who shares your zodiac sign She actually has my exact birthday! 😁
3/12 for my 2021 non-fiction goal
I am not rating this as there was just too much that I didn't connect with. I think it was just the type of person I am rather then the book itself. I'm an atheist and there was so much religious and spiritual advice. I started this book 6 years ago when i was thinking of getting into being more spiritual but that just isn't for me. (It's interesting to see how much I have changed since I started reading this years ago.) It also seemed like the author was more of a conservative black woman with more traditional ideals and values. Which ain't me 🙅🏽♀️. The book also did not age well and that is not necessarily the fault of the book so I didn't want to rate it unfairly.
However, some things that I absolutely hated and can definitely blame on the book/author is that it felt like the author was being very judgemental and stereotyped her target audience. This also contributed to the tone sounding very condescending in certain areas. Some of the advice given also felt a like it was from an assimilationist perspective. Basically how one should behave if they want to be a "respectable" black woman. Which was weird and jarring because all of the other material was very uplifting and a celebration of black women. I think this could be do to generational thing though.
I also felt that the advice was very vague and probably only helpful to someone just starting out on their growth journey (and who has never read a single self help book). It was basically just a list of what you "should do" and why but not any advice on HOW to actually carry out the changes. But this last one may be due to the book being written in 2001. Maybe this was par for the course back then.
