Having led a large, diverse, and geographically dispersed operational team in the Australian public service, my only regret is not having read Leading on the Edge sooner. This book on leadership is unlike most others. It doesn't just sell big ideas on culture in a way that leaves you inspired but slightly lost about how to apply them in a highly charged workplace, beholden to bureaucratic process. It shows you how it can be done through the authentic, first hand account of someone who has thrived in an environment more trying than most of us could ever imagine, and that it really can be done in the spirit of service to others and a shared mission. Leading on the Edge is inspiring because it is honest, vulnerable, and pragmatic in equal measure. Its glimpses of an agency's entrenched dysfunction that would make national headlines a decade after the book's publication is a testament to the author's intuition and insights. Highly commend and highly recommend.
