Chicken Soup for the Soul book, Christmas Magic. This way they can not only read about the nutty things families do but remember the amazing traditions that are brought on in their spirits too.

I love the forward for this book that if from Santa himself. In his foreword Santa Claus writes about how he and Mrs. Claus observe the festivities from the North Pole. He says, “We watch as you reunite scattered family members, enjoy the wonder on the face of a child, feel the joy of gift giving, and remember the true meaning of Christmas. We watch you gather with your communities at church, at school, and even at the mall, to share the special spirit of the season, brightening those long winter days.”

There are so many stories here to fill your soul. I know that this is becoming one of my permanent Christmas traditions. I have so enjoyed the evenings when I have read a story or two before going to sleep. I have also slept better having such nice stories rolling around in my mind too. With 101 stories that just about covers the time for me from Halloween til Christmas to help me get and stay in the spirit!

Типа детской библии. Эдакие истории про доброту. Не понравились..однотипные, с налетом грусти - не то настроение такое читать.

I love Chicken Soup books at the gym, and in the beginning, I found the stories in here to be great motivation for my workout, exercise longer to read a few more stories. Unfortunately, I think I acquired, and thus started, the book too late, as once the Christmas season ended, my interest in the stories waned. Perhaps I was just Christmas-ed out, or perhaps the stories in the early part of the book were just better, I don't know.
Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year, although the loss of close loved ones in 2013 brought the end to many of our family traditions and our new traditions feel like they will just be temporary bridges as more changes occur over the next few years, as much of my family talks about moving from snowy, cold PA to warmer climates. So perhaps that was part of what weighed on me at the end, that a lot of those stories talk about long-standing traditions. I have fond memories of my first 25+ Christmases, so the childhood memory stories were fine, and these last 2 Christmases have been nice too, but again, the feeling is that they won't continue through the test of time, and I haven't started a family of my own to begin our family traditions.
That said, it's not a bad book and for people like me who deep down love Christmas, it is very enjoyable. I would have probably given it 5 stars had I read it throughout the month of December rather than the end of December and beginning of January.

For many years in Seattle my family used to attend this Christmas theater play called "Voices of Christmas" which in order to be in the actors had to have their own personal Christmas story to tell as part of the variety show. The comedy and music were great, but the stories changed with the actors and for me were always the part I looked forward to the most. The show has long stopped being aired in Seattle, so this year I picked up this book looking for some of those kinds of stories. It's this desire that made me pick up this book. In that regard at times it met that desire.

This book has some of them like the Jewish woman who is adopted by a catholic woman during Christmas during WWII that basically saved her life. Or the kids giving up all their holiday presents to help pay for their dogs surgery. But this is a collection of short stories that spent too much time chasing the goal of 101 stories and that makes the stories very a great amount in writing quality, and depth. I often found myself drudging through so many stories to get to another gem.

Each night before bed, I try to tuck myself in with something that leaves me with a little glow. You know, a short story or two that warms the heart, lifts the spirit, and convinces me - just briefly - that humanity isn’t totally off the rails.

I’ve done philosophy, poetry, quotes, and even bedtime Stoicism (highly underrated, by the way). But sometimes, I want something a little more direct and cuddly. That’s where I thought the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series would come in.

Years ago, I read a few of these books and remembered them as not-half-bad nuggets of inspiration. Short, sweet, and uplifting. So when I spotted The Magic of Christmas, I thought, “It’s the holidays, so let’s bring back the cozy.” The title alone had me envisioning twinkly lights, family hugs, and mugs of peppermint cocoa. Unfortunately, what I got instead was Christmas joy that is strangely tinged with a wee bit of retribution.

Let me explain.

The format is still on point - bite-sized stories that you can finish in five minutes, perfect for winding down at the end of the day. The problem is the tone. It’s like these stories were written with one hand on a mug of cocoa and the other in a clenched fist. They’re supposed to be about the “magic” of Christmas, but quite a few stories come with a surprisingly sharp edge.

Take the opening story, for example. A young girl gets inadvertently bumped off the program for her school’s holiday recital due to a teacher’s error. Total Christmas buzzkill, right? But never fear, she’s added back in at the last moment, and all ends well. Except… the mother promises to hunt down the teacher who made the mistake and tear a strip out of her. Wait...What? I actually had to reread the line because I thought I misread it. But nope, it’s there - a little holiday detour into vengeance land before we swerve back to warm fuzzies.

And that’s the thing. That odd little note of “smite first, forgive later” pops up way more than you’d expect. Several stories seem to follow the formula of: 1) Something bad happens, 2) Initial response is borderline bloodlust, 3) Christmas miracle resolves it, 4) End with a hug and a wink. Except, that second step just seems to linger. It kind of hangs there, like the ghost of Christmas spite.

At times, it felt like I was reading Old Testament fan fiction. There are clear heroes and villains, and the villains deserve… well, let’s just say carolers aren’t coming to their door. Instead of being shown compassion, they’re often mentally flogged before the protagonist finally moves on to their “healing.” And the healing often felt more like personal vindication than genuine forgiveness.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some genuinely touching stories in here. Quite a few really do capture that ineffable warmth of the holiday season - acts of kindness, moments of courage, people coming together. Those moments reminded me why I liked the series in the first place. But they’re too often undermined by a little undercurrent of bitterness, like someone slipped a drop of vinegar into the punch bowl.

Also, the stories often felt quite formulaic. After a few chapters, I could pretty much predict the rhythm of each one: someone faces a holiday crisis, there’s a dramatic emotional low point, and then - cue the Christmas miracle - they’re saved by a last-minute act of kindness, coincidence, or divine intervention. Rinse and repeat.

So if you’re looking for something to end your day on a positive note, you might want to skip this book and look for something a little more consistent in tone. Maybe dig into a book of kind-hearted poetry. Or some James Herriot. Or honestly, just watch 20 minutes of the Hallmark Channel. At least there, the bad guys usually just get gently taught the meaning of Christmas without the threat of verbal decapitation.

With an anthology such as this, the content appears focused more on quantity than quality. Thus, the short stories included vary from the saccharine-sweet and emotionally manipulative to a few well-composed gems. Also, as there are repetitive and trite themes among the stories, one suspects that the composition of the book involved possibly culling material from writing assignments on a specific Christmas theme. As such, even for one seeking Christmas magic, it is hard not to roll one's eyes as another manufactured "I was a Grinch, then discovered the magic of Christmas through a poignant event or adorable child in my life" story proceeds one after another.

The suspiciously familiar set of stories involves a bit too much humblebragging, with point of views including a series of privileged do-gooders acknowledging the less fortunate or gaining perspective on a life for which they should possess more gratitude. Finally, the short format (each story is only a few pages) may also be problematic as the moral of each story requires a more tropes and less genuine poignancy.

I personally always enjoy any Chicken Soup for the Soul, book. I like the set up of so many short stories and a lot of relatable people.
As for CSFTS Christmas Magic… I found it to be a perfect heartwarming read for this time of year. It’s a great reminder of what Christmas is really about and I love how it gave me the feeling of being connected to others. The perfect book to show many short, sweet & relatable stories of both the miracles and magic of Christmastime✨

"I must say that these stories really touched and uplifted my soul. Although, in the beginning, I was sceptical about reading something that has already become a brand but the stories vary and brush a different subject each time and do justice to every emotion."

My sister got me this book for Christmas. I picked on this book because I have always enjoyed the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books and I used to subscribe to the daily emails in college and graduate school. This book is a wonderful collection of short stories from people all over the world, stories of hope, love, forgiveness and learning the true meaning and spirit of Christmas. I am actually kind of bummed now that I have finished it because when I am really enjoying a good book, I like to take my time and savor its feel, this was one of those times. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Chicken Soup for the Soul. Happy readings!!!

I can still remember the first time I read a Chicken Soup for the Soul book. I was a teen at the time and I became addicted immediately. I love that the stories included have a positive meaning, even if some parts are sad. I also feel empowered when I finish and Christmas Magic was no exception. I really loved this book and I have decided to make it a Christmas tradition to read it every year around the holidays. This would make a fantastic gift!

This was a great read for the Christmas season, in that the vignettes and stories were short, sweet, and uplifting. Some really touched me deeply; others were just fun. I was impressed with the range of writing as well -- some of the authors featured here were very talented and witty. Great for the holidays.

This is definitely the book to read when exhausted by holiday shopping. Enjoy it with a good hot beverage and a cookie. But don't forget the tissues because once again there are sad stories in this book that broke my heart.
