Decent art, story starts strong then falls flat

Fairly strong art, though there is little consideration for overall page design. That said, the rhythm of the panels, their shape, placement, and tonal variations, propels the narrative forward visually by leading the eye naturally from one panel to the next. The artist is strongest in built environments where strong perspective lines can be established - the few scenes outdoors have moments when the space is less convincing.

The story starts off using tropes of loss but still manages to weave in some nuance, a quality which, unfortunately, starts to get lost half way through as random story elements are thrown in without adequate development or rationale.

Finally, the Christian pathologies of heaven and hell, sin and redemption are used as horror tropes, I imagine because they are familiar, thus making it supposedly easier to build suspense or fear. It’s just tiresome. Instead of suspense, these overused themes just serve to foreground the twisted nature of religious belief. Compare this Spanish production to a broad sampling of Japanese manga, and you’ll see what I mean.

Happened upon this odd little thing while snatching up every bit of manga I could find at a library sale.

I don't want to be too harsh because it's very admirable what Studio Kosen was able to achieve by getting this published and it's apparent that they improved a lot between the initial concept stages of this and the final product, but--

It very much feels like a product of its time (2008) in the art direction and story. Angels and demons and psyche wards. The single relatively unobtrusive scar on the main character from a car accident was too softcore for the amount of maltreatment he got over it.

If I had to give props it would be that the main character's sexuality (he's gay) is offhandedly introduced in a natural way and isn't an exaggerated or fetishized focal point. The cool-gruesome transformation sequences towards the end were also neat. It just wasn't enough to make up for the relatively weak writing and played out concept. Maybe it's better in its original Spanish, I don't know.

This is just one of my person kinks, angels with shades of gray, demons, scarred angry men. This is manga done in Spain of all places and while the story isn’t all that terribly original I did find it engaging. Seisu is our pov character, a 16 year old angry young man left terribly scarred by a car accident that claimed his parents. It’s been him and his older sister for the last few years so they’re very protective about it. Seisu naturally gets tormented in high school because of his appearance and gets into fights which leaves slutty-dressing big sis Alys to help him find his peace (which happens to be birds. He loves them) especially as he is plagued with nightmares as well.

She takes him to a bird sanctuary, an old monastery turned hotel where all the monks mysteriously disappeared (which doesn’t raise as many eyebrows and worries as probably it should.) From here saying much more ruins it. Let’s just say they meet a white-haired young man Yabrail who is both cold and yet oddly concerned about Seisu, who probably would have been attracted to him except that Alys said the man was giving her dirty looks.

Things go rapidly down hill and hell erupts, literally. Yabrail and Alys are in real trouble leaving Seisu teamed up with the surly Ophel who gives the impression of being Yabrail’s lover. He barely has his angel’s wings any more and is covered with scars. He doesn’t like Seisu but in order to save Yabrail he’ll work with him. We learn that once touched by hell, angels can be rehabbed at the hospital Ophel takes Seisu too but can never be clean again (nor can Seisu for that matter). They need to get Yil another tortured angel. She can open the gate of hell, too bad she’s in a straight jacket. The real problem for Seisu is that being in close contact with the taint of hell on him could make Ophel and Yil revert to what they were when they were rescued, which doesn’t appear to be a good thing. I enjoyed it but there is a fair amount of nudity and violence.

I always had a soft spot for Studio Kosen, maybe because they were my first access to fanmade manga while growing up. I actually read the short stories that lead into this book, and I can recognize a lot of the characters in it.

However, the book, while has an improved artstyle, feels a little "meh" to me. I think maybe they excelled in the medium of short stories (or maybe because this was the project of one of their single members).

The motivations of some of the characters seem a bit contrived, as do the backstories and justifications. I couldn't entirely fall in love with it as I did with their Garou-Chan, which I sincerely adored (and still do).

Why, oh why do I found out that the authors aren't planning to keep going this AMAZING story!? Even if it's just Volume 1, unfinished for ever, it's a totally recommendable yaoi. Brilliantly draw, and a story that captures you from the very beginning of it <3
