This is a wonderful book for anyone who grew up with the Moomins and Tove Jansson's unique way of describing characters in all their peculiar lovabilities. Portraits of the entire cast of the Moominvalley are accompanied by the typical art, and an essay on Tove Jansson herself.
If you don't know the Moomins yet, this book will inspire you to make their acquaintance!

This is a gorgeously produced book which is a delight to page through. I was less taken with the text which was mostly a catalog of characters, places, and events -- I would far rather simply reread the books themselves. A section at the end about Tove Jansson's art and life, and the history of the moomins was a lot more interesting, and reproduces some of Jansson's juvenile art which was fun to see. The whole thing is written in somewhat simplistic style that sometimes made me unsure who the audience of this book is meant to be -- children? adult moomin fans? Everyone else on goodreads seems to love it unreservedly, so I feel a bit like a groke, but what can you do.

“This is the way to start a new life, with a hurricane lamp shining at the top of the mast, and the coastline disappearing behind one as the whole world lies sleeping.”I’m a great believer that if one’s year begins with a Moomin, thereafter the mind will be composed and the reading diverse and balanced. I’m no philosopher, of course, and you would be unlikely to find such notional theories in the writings of Sartre or even Edward Westermarck, so it may be wise to take my advice with a swig of Moominmamma’s homemade Glögi.
The World of Moominvalley, written by Philip Ardagh, and with a Foreword by Frank Cottrell Boyce, is a delightful introduction to Moominland and the creatures living there. It also explores the world of its visionary creator, Tove Jannson – every page bustling with her original illustrations. It was a gift from my mother for my last birthday, and one which I will cherish and no doubt dip-into many times in the future.
The reader is familiarised with all the dearly loved (and lesser-known) characters. In addition to Moominpappa and his immediate family, we meet Moomintroll’s love interest, the Snorkmaiden, as well as Little My, Snufkin, Sniff, Too-ticky, Dweller Under the Sink and all the other residents of Moominvalley.
Between its glossy pages you will find chapters on Mysterious Creatures, Moomin-isms, Music in Moominvalley, and even Catastrophes and The Dark Side of Moominvalley. All the information has been gleaned from the eight volumes in the main Moomin cannon, but not from the strip cartoons or The Moomins and the Great Flood, which differ to some extent from what is generally considered to be the true Moomin tales.
My aesthetically gorgeous hardback copy has a sumptuously designed die-cut cover featuring gold foil, which would be adored by the incorrigible fan or Moomin newbie alike. It will also appeal to both children and adults.

El Mundo del Valle de los Mumin es un libro que me dejó encantadísima. Tanto que alargué muchos meses su lectura, saboreándolo de a poquito cada semana. Pero llegó el momento: di vuelta la última página y acá estoy recomendando este libro maravilloso.
Tengo que decir que, desde hace tiempo soy fan de los Mumin; adoro su estética y todo el universo que Tove Jansson creó para ellos. Aunque he disfrutado mucho de la serie de dibujos animados, nunca había leído un libro de la autora, lo cual es un poco vergonzoso y triste de admitir. Así que, cuando tuve la oportunidad de sumergirme en este libro, fue como descubrir una nueva dimensión de ese mundo que tanto me gusta.
El libro es simplemente increíble. Desde el primer momento, la portada en tapa dura te atrapa con su diseño, y la encuadernación en general es de excelente calidad. Pero lo que más destaco son, sin duda, las ilustraciones mágicas de Tove Jansson. Cada página está llena de detalles que te transportan directamente al Valle de los Mumin. Es un placer visual tener este libro en las manos y en el librero.
Otra cosa que me encantó es la documentación que hay detrás y la manera en que Philip Ardagh narra la historia. Logra hacer que el mundo de los Mumin y la vida de Tove Jansson cobren vida de una manera que no solo es informativa, sino también envolvente.
Ahora, siendo honesta, mi única queja: el formato del libro. Es grande y un poco pesado, lo que hace difícil llevarlo a todas partes para leerlo a cada rato, como me gustaría 🥺🥹. Mitad broma y mitad realidad, porque quería leerlo en todas partes y mirar sus ilustraciones hermosas pero no podía.
Este es un libro casi perfecto y hermoso, ideal para disfrutarlo en un día frío de invierno, bien abrigados, como los Mumin en su acogedora casita. Por cierto, después de leerlo, me ha dado aún más ganas de devorar todos los libros de los Mumin, que acabo de aprender son nueve y están muy bien trabajados.

Massively disappointing and mostly pointless. Partly my fault for not recognizing what kind of book it would be: I was hoping for something celebrating the Moomins in all their glory in all their forms (foreign book covers, the theme park, details about the TV shows, facts about the author's life, information about inspirations, etc.) and what I got instead was a book repeating information from the Moomin books which I have already read oodles of times and know perfectly well.
The repeated information (e.g. Hemulens are bossy) would be demonstrated with quotes from the books, and illustrations from the books, all of which seemed redundant to one who's already quite the Moomin fancier. (And nonsensical for someone who isn't).
I can understand this type of book for something like One Piece with its 1,000 episodes, or Agatha Christie with 100-ish books, with a dozen times as many characters, but for the Moomins, with a mostly stable cast and very few books? What's the point?
The only interesting section was at the very end (the final 50 pages) which came closest to what I'd been hoping for, but was laid out essentially biographically, barely mentioned the Moomins in other media, showed no examples of the branded merchandise, and didn't mention the theme park.
The good news is there's room in the marketplace for a glossy, show-all book about everything Moomin. This wasn't it.
(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful.)

Warto, choćby dla samych pięknych ilustracji Tove (moje ulubione to kolorowe rozkładówki). Kompendium wiedzy o świecie Muminków, napisane przystępnym językiem. Jakbym miała się do czegoś przyczepić, to zabrakło mi informacji o tym, w których książkach występowali bohaterowie (takie szczegóły techniczne "uniwersum"), ale zdaję sobie sprawę, że książka miała być też dla dzieci, więc wybaczam. I tak spędziłam na jej czytaniu zbyt miłe chwile z uśmiechem na ustach, żeby coś w niej krytykować.
Bardzo podobała mi się część o życiu Tove i wpływu, jakie wywarło ono na jej twórczość.

Ta książka jest spełnieniem marzeń każdego dorosłego fana Muminków, który w czasie lektury nie tylko ponownie może ukochany świat zgłębiać, ale i uporządkować jego elementy. Livet i Mumidalen er en gennemgang af hele mumi-universet lige fra de karakterer, der optræder, den mad, de spiser og det sprog, de taler til årets gang, særlige højtider og de katastrofer, der indtræffer. Bogen tilbyder grundige, oplysende portrætter af alle Mumidalens karakterer uanset hvor lille en rolle, de måtte spille, og det er tydeligt, at alle mumihistorierne er blevet gennemgransket for at finde frem til hver eneste lille detalje om de mange væsener. Portrætterne kan selvfølgelig læses rent bogstaveligt som noget, der kun omhandler den givne karakter, men som det jo er med Janssons figurer, kan de også overføres til alle de mennesker, vi møder i vores hverdag. Den forfængelige og følsomme Snorkfrøken, den eftertænksomme og altid grublende Mumifar og den pålidelige, frihedselskende Mumrik er måske nok fremmede af udseende i en menneskeverden, men deres egenskaber er universelle, og det er ikke svært at udpege de forskellige karakterer blandt sine egne nærmeste.
Den smukke bog består dog ikke kun af portrætter. Den rummer også beskrivelser af selve dalen, hvordan årets gang sædvanligvis forløber og undervejs er sjove og oplysende faktabokse, hvor læseren for eksempel kan få et kursus i at tale som Tofslen og Vifslen, lære at forstå mumiudtryk og vendinger, og så er der selvfølgelig også en guide til mumipift og deres betydninger. Men det aller, aller, allerbedste er de sidste kapitler, der inviterer læseren ind i Tove Janssons verden som barn, kunstner og forfatter.

What a beautiful book! The pages are gorgeous, the illustrations are stunning. The whole thing is a work of art! The only reason it’s taken me so long to read is the book is way to big / heavy/ precious to take it out of the house with me so this was a ‘any spare moment at home’ kind of book! 5/5!

I adored this, but that didn't surprise me as the Moomins were a huge part of my childhood and I still enjoy their antics and stories to this day.
I likes that this book explains the different creatures you meet in the valley, the valley itself and events that happens there.I enjoyed that this book also gives attention to Tove Jansson's life, who she was as a person and a family member.
There is some spoilers in this for the main 8 Moomin books so if you dont know the stories you might not want to chose this as your first Moomin read.
I read this in Norwegian and it only took me 2 days to read, it is heavy on illustrations as it should be.

Recent Reads: The World Of Moominvalley. Philip Ardagh's guide to Tove Jansson's creations mixes character biographies and an exploration of the Moomins' world with Jansson's own life and art, from childhood pamphlets to political cartoons, and her giant civic murals. A fascinating, if big, book.

As a huge fan of the Moomin stories my expectations for this book were high and not achieved. It's an okay glimpse back at the Moomin world, but it does not stand as a strong or interesting book on its own and holds no actual depth.
This book reads like a fandom page graced with the wonderful content/illustrations pulled from the existing books, but has nothing new or clever to offer. In fact, I've read many more nuanced, detailed, and insightful fandom pages than this book, which is quite sad. I feel like I would've had a better time reading a wiki article about Tove and the Moominvalley, followed by revisiting one of the actual Moomin books that are so truly exceptional.

+ It's a pretty book in a way that all actual Moomin books are. Tove's artwork is magical and it's a pleasure to see it anywhere, again and again.
+ The Moomin characters, settings, and ideas are lovely and nice to revisit, no matter how briefly.
~ Character overviews are okay, but not detailed enough to be interesting. The same stands for overviews of the other elements of the world, such as magic, seasons, music, etc. Most are rather disjointed and feel incomplete.
- Many elements of the world, even as simple as many locations are not mentioned at all.
- The book doesn't have a clear reader age in mind. The writing begins as oriented for a very young audience and is quite charming. However, by the later parts of the book the style changes to an older reader. This inconsistency is confusing and unsatisfying.
- A lot of repetition of the same information grows very tiresome by the end. It feels like either the writer is struggling with extreme forgetfulness or expects the reader to not be able to hold onto any information for more than a page.
- No full universe catalogue, no detailed history, no true critical analysis make this book quite a disappointment for serious fans and make it feel rather pointless. A pair of clever theme observations are insufficient to make the book notable and feel more suitable for a jacket blurb. However, I do believe this book can be a starting point for a much better world overview or analysis in the future.

ก่อนอื่น มูมินพาไปพบผองเพื่อนที่หลายๆคนเป็นที่รู้จักกันอยู่แล้ว เพราะโผล่มาหลากหลายตอนไม่ว่า คุณพ่อ คุณแม่ของมูมิน ที่จะมีการสั่งสอนมูมินให้เป็นเด็กดี และเราเพิ่งได้รู้ว่า คุณพ่อมูมินเป็นนักผจญภัยที่เขียนหนังสือเล่าเรื่องตัวเองไม่จบสักที

Vilken underbar bok… Om jag bara hade kunnat få tag på den på svenska, hade den om möjligt kunnat bli bättre!
Kanske är konstigt iochmed jag tagit mig cirka 6 månader för mig att läsa boken haha… Jag skulle inte säga att detta är en sådan bok man sträckläser,, inte jag iallafall! Jag har ett gäng böcker som jag kallar för hobbyböcker, som jag läser lite här och där när jag känner för det bredvid min andra läsning!
Det är verkligen något med Muminvärlden som klamrat sig fast i mitt hjärta. Jag kommer ihåg som liten hur fascinerad jag var av alla dessa skumma varelser! Men även hur jag älskade vissa, störde mig på några och var livrädd för andra. Tove Jansson skildrar dessa olika karaktärer på ett så underbart sätt, absolut inte endast menat för barn!
Som ”vuxen” kan jag fortfarande relatera till dessa figurer. Tove låter sina karaktärer få vara ledsna, arga, egoistiska, glada, ödmjuka, och så vidare. Vi får följa med på HELA resan och allt vad det innebär. Ett faktum som jag anser vara viktigt för barn, men även vuxna, att följa och ta del av.
Tillbaka till just denna boken! Boken skildrar, ungefär som ett faktauppslag, alla de olika karaktärer vi får ta del av i Toves böcker om mumintrollen och andra varelser. Här ingår citat och alla de vackra alster Tove själv målat och sketchat. Ytterligare ett faktum som får mig att älska muminvärlden, Tove och denna boken. Alla VACKRA och FANTASTISKA illustrationer. Jag blir lika mållös och varm när jag lägger ögonen på KONSTVERKEN!
Bland karaktärerna har vi de ”mörkare” karaktärerna, såsom Mårran. Boken beskriver underbart hur faktiskt Mårran representerar depression, och mörka känslor som hör till, men hur de finns där och måste arbetas genom. Tove Jansson i mitt hjärta. Och Mårran.
I sista delen av boken får vi inblickar i Toves uppväxt och hennes liv som artist. Tove Jansson är en av de främsta kvinnor jag ser upp till. En vass politisk kommentator, skicklig illustratör och målare, inspirerande talesperson, hbtq-medlem och en jäkla dunderkvinna!
Läs denna boken om du är intresserad av muminvärlden och historian bakom! Dessutom får du ta del av ett par dunder illustrationer och lära känna våra älskade mumintroll! 5/5!

Znajdziecie tu mnóstwo ciekawostek, poczynając od historii rodziny Muminków, przez ich zwyczaje, przepisy kulinarne, ubiór czy ulubione powiedzonka.
Książka umożliwia również wejście do pracowni autorki, gdzie dowiemy się, jak powstawały kolejne przygody bohaterów w Dolinie Muminków. Mamy opisy postaci, ich pierwsze szkice i wiele więcej.

A stunning embossed cover with gold foil. And full to the brim with Tove Jansson beautiful Moomin artwork and Moomin philosophy! A must have for Moomin fans.
We see how each species encapsulates a character type and where she got her inspiration for the Moomins and friends. For instance, her partner Tooti was the inspiration for Too-Ticky.
The last section looks at Tove's life, growing up in an artistic family, living during times of war, setting up as an artist and also eventually being able to live openly with Tooti.
I was sometimes frustrated by the simplistic writing but had to remind myself that it is aimed at a wide range in ages!

This Moomin compendium is absolutely gorgeous. The layout is so well done, with tons of original illustrations and photographs presented in a beautiful color scheme. Without even reading the text I would’ve rated this 5 stars on looks alone. But then I would’ve missed out on really nicely compiled information on the Moomins taken from the 8 original books, ranging from character introductions to the seasons in Moominvalley. My favorite part was the one about Tove Jansson and a closer look behind the scenes though. Tove was an amazing artist and person and I’d love to find out more about her now.

Väga hea raamat saamaks ülevaadet Muumidest, nende sõpradest ja muudest raamatutes olevatest tegelastest. Raamat pajatab ja lahkab ka Muumide iseloomu, nende häid ja halbu omadusi. Muumid on nagu inimesed oma heade külgede ja vigadega, rõõmude ja kurbustega.
Muumitarkusi ei hakka ümber kirjutama (va üks), neid lugege Muumi raamatutest ise. Kokku on Muumilugusid 9 raamatu jagu.
Raamat annab hea ülevaate ka Tove Janssoni elust, tegemistest ja armastusest.

Fantastyczne kompendium wiedzy o świecie Muminków, ale także o samej Tove, jej życiu, inspiracjach i różnych zajęciach. Także tym jaki wpływ Muminki miały na inne produktu kultury. Choć w pierwszej kolejności to leksykon postaci, także tych ledwie wspomnianych, a to nad wyraz cenna pomoc, bo trudne je wszystkie spamiętać. Są także krótkie omówienia wszystkich książek, także tych krótkich obrazkowych. I ta powtórka z fabuł także bywa przydatna. Książka jest bogato ilustrowana przepięknymi ilustracjami.

Hermoso libro. Una enciclopedia completa de los Moomins.
Cambian un poco los nombres entre España y Latinoamérica pero no es que importe mucho...
Los Moomins me han acompañado la vida entera, conociéndolos principalmente por el Anime y luego sus libros... No tengo palabras para explicar lo maravillosos que son...
Recomendado para grandes y chicos. Entrar en el universo Moomin es una de las mejores experiencias que pueden existir.

Un libro perfecto para los fans de los Mumin. He recordado muchas cosas y he aprendido otras tantas nuevas.
Los Mumin son bondad, magia. calma...No hay palabras suficientes para describir todo lo que significan para mí.
Aunque está escrito en tono infantil no deja de aportar información interesante. La única pega es la repetición de textos en diversas ocasiones que hacían más aburrida la lectura. Habría disfrutado más con más variedad o eliminando esos copia y pega.
Aún así, muy entretenido.

Teos on üks suur uurimustöö muumidest ja erinevatest läbivatest teemadest ning tegelastest, kes jooksevad läbi raamatute.
Kõik tegelased on välja toodud koos kirjelduste ja illustratsioonidega ning isegi suhtekaardil ära seletatud (kes on kelle vend-õde, jne).
Teos ise ei ole jutustus, pigem uurimustöö ja kõrvaliseks lugemiseks muumifännidele.
Soovitan lugeda seda raamatut kui oled juba lugenud vähemalt mõnda muumiraamatut, muidu võib olla ei loo niivõrd häid seoseid tegelaste vahel ning ka teemade (nt katastroofide) seletus ei anna lisaväärtust.
Raamatus on vist pea kõik illustratsioonid ära toodud (pole 100% kindel, aga raamat koosneb väga paljudest illustratsioonidest, tsitaatidest ja ka Tove’i teistest teoste piltidest). Endale jubedalt meeldisid raamatus illustratsioonid, mis olid segamini uute ja vanadega (nt. lk 298 on kõrvutatud “Sabatähe” originaalillustratsioon pliiatsi ja tušimaaliga ning hilisem versioon pliiatsi ja tušiga; samuti on raamatus ka erinevaid nn visandeid, mis on jäänud Tove’i töödest alles).

This wonderful book is beautifully written and designed.
If you like the Moomin's world, this is a must. You are going to learn a lot while looking at the beautiful illustrations. At the end of the book, there is also an interesting section about Tove's life and historical time with lots of interestings details.
