This book provides a detailed reconstruction of the process of formation of the modern concept of society as an objective entity from the 1820s onwards, thus helping to better understand the shaping of the modern world and the nature of the current crisis of modernity. The concept has exerted considerable influence over the last two centuries, during which time many people have conceived themselves and behave as members of a society, and social scientists have explained human subjectivities and conducts as social effects. For both groups, society exists as a very real phenomenon. Historical inquiry shows, however, that the modern concept of society is no more than a historically contingent way of imagining and making sense of the human world.

سال ها از زمانی که علم جامعه شناسی شکل گرفته می گذرد. نویسنده کتاب با مروری بر ریشه های اصلی شکل گیری علم جامعه و علل و عوامل آن به بررسی مفهوم جامعه و تبعات تاکید بر این مفهوم می پردازد. خواننده با مطالعه این کتاب پی می برد که چگونه تاکید بر فردگرایی ناشی از لیبرالیسم که خود را در حوزه علمی با روانشناسی گرایی پیوند زده در جامعه غربی منشاء بحران بوده است. متاسفانه در جامعه فعلی ایرانی، ما در حال تجربه چنین شرایطی هستیم. کم کم نقد جامعه شناسان به وضعیت روانشناسی گرایی در محافل علمی در حال رونق گرفتن است. لیکن حل مسائل اجتماعی با راهکارهای روانشناختی تجربه ای است که نویسنده کتاب به دقت نشان می دهد چگونه در غرب شکست خورده است
در مورد ایران نیز آزموده را آزمودن خطاست لیکن بخاطر این که رونق جامعه شناسی و علم اجتماعی تبعات خاص خود را دارد به همین دلیل از رشد روانشناسی گرایی استقبال و به شیوه های این علم بیشتر روی خوش نشان داده می شود

Muy claro y muy repetitivo, clásico de Cabrera. Nunca habia tenido ganas de leer a Marx, Engels y Comte hasta leer esto. Podría haber sido más largo tho, (se titula "genealogical history") ya que solo se tratan en profundidad esos autores, quizás el título "society as a genealogical concept" o "towards a genealogical history of society" hubiera sido más accurate pero tampoco es plan de ponerse quisquilloso. 4/5, buen texto y mejor persona.
