Thirty of history's greatest gymnastics champions are featured here, including such celebrated gold medal winners as Kerri Strug, Dominique Moceanu, Vitaly Scherbo, Jaycie Phelps, Amanda Borden, Bart Conner, Svetlana Boginskaya, Amy Chow, and Mary Lou Retton.
"Everyone sees a gymnast's public moments-- the victories and defeats-- but no one, until now, has managed to bring out such an individually tailored, true portrait of these fine people as artists. Through their stories and photographs, we see a side of these great people which they only show to their closest friends."--Bela Karolyi
This was a fun (and quick) read. The book is full of photos. Some are action shots, but nearly all of them are artistic in nature. Two examples are Shannon Miller in a lavender dress balancing on a horse (probably my favorite picture) and Chainey Umphrey as Atlas with the earth on his shoulders.
Along with the photographs, the gymnasts share their experiences, what drew them to gymnastics and what they learned along the way.
Most of the gymnasts featured competed in the 90's, and the Magnificent Seven are included. There are some top gymnasts from earlier times, though, like Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci. Most interesting to me were the two gymnasts from the 50's since it was so interesting to here what gymnastics was like back then.
Also, at the beginning there is a handy list of the gymnasts and their career highlights.
