In order to keep the Maritime Northwest Garden Guide an accurate resource for Northwest organic gardeners, the book has been updated for its third printing. Areas updated include the seed houses, compost & gardening resources, and reference book lists, with websites added as appropriate. A section on educational websites for NW gardening was also included. The Guide still includes the detailed monthly gardening calendar, as well *Maritime Northwest Climate Zone Map *How to extend the growing season *Completely revised and updated vegetable, herb, and flower variety recommendations *Month-by-month gardening recommendations *Beneficial insect identification *How to beat common plant diseases organically *Getting organic outside the garden *Ideas for gardening with children The Maritime Northwest Garden Guide continues to be the "must have" resource for novice and expert Northwest gardeners alike.
This book was produced by Seattle Tilth, a network of gardeners and farmers promoting sustainable agriculture. This critical book is written specificially for the challenges and opportunities available to those gardening in the PNW. Moving through the calendar year, the Maritime Northwest Garden Guide guides you gently through the year. It's August - here's what you should harvest, here's what you should plant, here's the garden chores to accomplish this month. Along the way, there are discussing of compost, worm bins, gardening like an ecosystem, growing in cloches and cold frames, organic fertilizers, pollinators, common diseases and pests, companion planting, and so on. This is a must-have for everyone trying to garden in the PNW, with year-round advice that makes a solid difference in your success and confidence. I have a green thumb, generally, and learned a lot from this. I think the blackest/brownest thumb could benefit dramatically from this book. They sell this at the Olympia COOP!
I've just started getting into (sustainable) gardening and the books are piling up. This book is the gem of the pile. It's clear, concise, well written, and doesn't hit you over the head repeatedly with patronizing life stories and rambling snobbery (I'm looking at you, Joel Salatin). It's a guide. It sneaks in a few cute anecdotes to get the point across, while serving as excellent reference material.
I've had my copy of this book for years. It is the one I recommend to anyone local who is looking for a good book on gardening. Straightforward, only about 75 pages, and the best guide I've found for our local climate. This was especially valuable to me as someone who moved here from a completely different part of the country. Organized by month, it helped me understand when to get things done in my PNW garden. I still refer back to it a few times a year.
So...This is the book for gardeners in Oregon and all the way up to B.C.
This is the book for you! The ONLY gardening book that a Pacific NW gardener would ever need. The layout is amazing. Month by month gardening and soil prep. Also compost info.
We have started a compost bin and worm bin and this book made it ever so easy.
I'm hesitant to mark this book as "finished" just because I think I'll continue to pick it up at least once a week for the remainder of the growing season. So much info packed into such a conveniently sized publication. And so well organized. Time will tell, but I feel like this book will warrant the praise "indispensable".
This is a great guide put together by the Seattle Tilth on organic gardening with lots of info on edibles. It's set up by month so you know what to do when. Lots of info on starting plants from seeds and when to sow different seeds.
The best! I only wish it was expanded. The constantly read companion for any gardener. I first found it on the internet back in high school and started salivating, only to finally get my hands on it years later.
I wish I'd heard of this book before planning my garden and starting seedlings. It has so much info specific to the Pacific Northwest's climate and soil and bug activity, etc. I need to have this handy throughout the year!
This powerhouse resource from Seattle Tilth is a planting and gardening calendar plus a bunch of tidbits and goodies and wisdom all packaged in small form. I cannot recommend this one more highly for Pacific Northwest region gardeners, beginner or veteran.
this book is a great when-to-plant guide (with other pertinent growing-food information) that will serve you especially well if you live in the pacific northwest. every growing zone should have a guide like this.
This book is full of great information - my favorite part is the short chapter format organized on month-by-month basis. A must have for any home gardener in the Pacific Northwest!
Most useful Washington planting guide I have found yet. Includes planting dates and tons of useful tips for composting, soil quality and all season planting.
