I thought this book was interesting. I learned Chinese arranged marriages are not as common as I previously thought- looks like my thinking was stuck in the stone ages.

1948 Tai Kong, China. 11 year old Ying loves living in Chan village with her Ah Pau and cousins. When her paternal grandmother, Ah Mah, becomes very sick, Ying is sent to visit her in the far away village of Tai Kong. When she gets there, Ying discovers that her Ah Mah isn't sick at all and has plans to marry Ying to a stranger! Ying is determined to return home to Ah Pau, who really is sick, no matter what!

Great story with a strong female character. The ending was a happy surprise. The story included a lot of information about marriage and funeral customs of the time.
