The two counties 'mainly fill the space between the Delaware and the Schuylkill from Philadelphia north Ward to the Durham and Reading Hills, the northeast ern extension of the South Mountain; and the New Red covers the whole of the two counties, except a narrow strip of older rocks along the southern edge and another at the northernmost corner, and a small Paleozoic island, so to speak, about ten miles long and a mile or two wide.
