A critique of photographic art is that so much of it is about going to extremes. Nudity! Sex! Taboo bodies and scenes! How interesting then, that I cannot think of another work like this one, that seems to break through a taboo to powerful effect as it shows us the aging body of Cumming's subject. Despite a restrained attitude, it somehow feels even more shocking than Terry Richardson with his cock out--proving the ageist and sexist attitudes at the core of our society. Is the work exploitative? I'm not sure. Is my urge to feel like the subject is a victim yet more of the same? Again, not sure. Anyway, these are stunning photographs in what feels like an authentically important work.
