Trying to cut back on my reading budget, I look for free e-books on Kindle on a regular basis. I would go to the library, but for clarity and visibility reasons, I prefer reading on my Kindle paper white. It’s really more about perfecting good lighting when reading at night. This Kentucky Vice, by James Harper was one of those free books, and that eased the pain when I realized how much I didn't like the story. Overall I thought there were too many goons and low morality people. Not that it was explicit, not that, but a plot that revolves around a strip-club owner and his entourage who blackmail customers is a delicate matter, but all we get are heinous bad guys and moronic victims who make all the wrong moves. I thought these men and women were puerile in their behavior and that got on my nerves quickly. Let me put it this way: the more I advanced in this story, the more I feared my IQ was going down.

"Why the fuss?"

This had a great premise, with the night to remember that Jesse didn't. By halfway, I wondered when things would pick up, but they never did. It became your standard slug fest with the bad guy being flagged early doors. As for the attempted drug-fueled confusion of who was wearing a black or white hat towards the end, well it was comical, not gripping. Not for me, I'm afraid.

James Harper describes Kentucky Vice as a suspense crime thriller. That is an accurate description with an emphasis on suspense. Although it is part of a series titled Evan Buckley Thrillers Book 2, I found no problems appreciating this novel without having read Book 1 first. Amazon sells the book for USD 2.99 or offers it as a read-for-free on Kindle Unlimited. After reading Book 2, I want to read Book 3 because (surprise) there is a cliffhanger at the end of Book 2. This is in no way a spoiler. Kentucky Vice is a self-contained pleasant reading experience all by itself with many moving parts (subplots). But there is that one, small unresolved matter that I want to know about. Bring on Book 3.

For Jesse Springer, the question was: Which came first, the credit card bill or the photos? He didn’t have to decide. The photos arrived at a most inopportune time while wifey was descending the stairs for morning coffee. First, hide the photos, then intercept the credit card bill. Diane was not to know about this. It would be hard to justify the thirty-thousand-dollar charge on his bill. Photographic evidence proved the existence of the two women plus Jesse in an intimate meeting. Telling Diane that he had gotten two for the price of one might be a last-minute strategy. But for that price, Jesse wished he could remember anything about the experience.

Jesse recruits friend and private detective Evan Buckley to chase down what happened. This begins the recruitment of the cast of characters that will interact to explain this interesting scam. Evan must trace the credit card and visit the club where the unremembered action took place. The reader quickly learns that a drug was involved, one so powerful that victim memory is erased. Jesse was not the first victim. Drugging wealthy patrons so that they could be posed in intimate situations was a staple money-making method at Chi Chi’s. Samantha, assistant manager, and all-around pimp and sadist would then charge the client’s credit card for as much as the market would bear. Pay the bill or receive unwanted publicity. No complaints, no crime.

With setting in place, the reader will meet many characters who seem to have shifting values as they interact to either profit or seek forgiveness for their past actions. Gina is one of the girls at Chi Chi’s. As innocent as any part-time stripper (with occasional benefits for special customers) Gina is working her way through school and is looking to leave the life of sleaze behind. She wished she had not discovered the scam. She felt morally bound to report the activity she considered criminal. Her colleague, Destiny, didn’t feel bad about what she was doing, she was supporting a powerful Corvette. She had no intention of leaving the business but also had no intention of someone hurting the innocent Gina. Samantha, more of a madam, had no regrets about anything at all. She loved the opportunity for occasional torture and even the less frequent opportunity for murder. Tony D’Amato was a boss who had unique interests and talents. He was stereotypically guilty just due to his name.

Into all this ride the forces of good. Evan wants to help his friend Jesse but has a few other things going on. There are the unsolicited any mysterious emails alluding to the location of Sarah, his missing wife. Sister Charlotte has hired him to find out if her husband Mitch was cheating on her. Family ties and obligations set him on paths he did not want to go. Evan needs help in his investigation from former female cop partner. Will there be a romance? There is almost a bromance between Evan and local cop Angel. Sure, they had to work together but how closely? Angel would not mind getting closer to Gina or Destiny, while Evan seems to have a more vicarious interest in the two lovely reluctant professionals. And then there is the reluctant Forrest. In fact, there are two of them. Are they innocent businessmen, victims, or guilty conspirators?

With so much crime and so many unsavory characters, I was surprised the story could be told with so little objectionable vocabulary. This is a safe book as far as sex, violence, and bad language. There are lots of surprises, most of them about characters and their shifting values (not all of which go in a positive direction. This is solid storytelling with which to fill a few hours. I gave it four Amazon stars and look forward to reading Book 3.

Bad To The Bones, #1 - Read a couple of freebies by this author and dug this book out of my library. This is an interesting and immersing, this intense read is difficult to put down. Good characters that are easy to either like or dislike. The story lines are interesting. There are twists, turns and misdirects that keep the pages flipping to the end. It is too easy to turn this review into a book report. Never mind Ryder at the beginning, the book just gets better with each page read. 5*

Kentucky Vice, #2 - OK, I should have stopped with the first book, this one is rather silly. Some real good characters, good story lines but not much realism, lots of hollywood-style tripe. Instead of immersing myself in the dramatic scenes, I was laughing myself silly. This is still a fun read but it is labeled a thriller, falls short by a long shot. The author acts a bit like the Nutjob that brings the story to the end, explaining everything while running through a gamut of emotions, from normal to a raving lunatic. NO, ole James isn't a lunatic, but he lost a grip on his writing style and went plumb silly with events, dialog and moving from drama to slapstick comedy and Cozy-style genres. Read it for entertainment knowing that the last part of the book forgot the style and genre of the beginning. Just because KV is so funny and there are two worthy female characters, this gets four stars. Else, two stars would be being nice. 4*

Sins of the Father, #3 - Seems like the women are "lemon-sucker" lipped whiners and the male characters are raving lunatics wanting to hurt or kill someone, common types for the last two books. The beginning of this story is a bit hollywood-style silliness but improves as the story goes on. The noose is not removed, which is idiotic, but the story had to continue. Interesting story lines blending the new and foundation. Violence, bloody but not detailed gory. This takes place not long after the previous story ends. Touch of romance. Serendipitous end to a sad case. That is Grandfather, not grandfather. 4*

Once Bitten, #17 - Since the last book of this series I read was Sins of the Father, #3, I lost a lot of the foundation and was confused by some of the references to the past. That aside, this is still an interesting story with good story lines. The misdirections were not as convincing about which criminal(s) turned to law. In previous books, the misdirections were more successful. Although from Sins, I received the impression that Crow would join the regular cast of characters, I wished I had read the other books. Too many "what happened" questions. While not what I would call a standalone, Once Bitten is still an interesting story. 4*

Never Go Back, #18 - An interesting read with plenty of jawing between the two not partners as they search for a missing American student studying in England. A lot of happenings, good, bad and ugly, made for a good read as the present mingles with the past. 4*

See No Evil - With this bit on the wordy side story, I was confused by some of Evan's ramblings and some of his references to the past. I lost a lot of the foundation not reading the books between Sins of the Father and Once Bitten. That aside, this is still an interesting story with good story lines. I like the misdirection and the obvious is steady changing. I did not get the killer, but found the activities of this person of interest. Compared to the first three books, the writing style has improved for the better. 4*

Fallen Angel - It's an OK, short read. No surprises, an old story retold by others. 3*

A Rock And A Hard Place - This is a better short story than Fallen Angel. Interesting with a good story line. 4*

While a big fan of established greats such as Rex Stout and John D. MacDonald, I also like to try out newer writers. In the past, when books were actually printed on paper, to try an unknown name was a gamble. Would a specific work be worth several dollars or more? Especially if down to your last dollar? These days, when e-books are sold at deep discounts, or even free, the gamble is much less. I therefore download many books that seem to have even a little potential.

This is how KENTUCKY VICE by James Harper showed up on my Kindle. I enjoyed the story, even though it seemed a bit uneven.

At first I had to get past the cliché in the blurb: “…wise-cracking, street-smart private-eye Evan Buckley…” I learned a long time ago, however, that one cannot always trust blurbs. The story itself, however, is solid enough. The protagonist, Buckley, is not necessarily original, but he has a back story and character traits that make him interesting. The plot quickly leads to the seedy world of strip clubs, which can also be interesting. The story moved quickly.

I think, however, it had a few rough places.

I did not find the dialogue, for example, particularly realistic:

‘Can you give Louisville PD a call, see if they know anything about it, if it’s happened before? I don't want to schlep all the way down there if there's already a major investigation going on.’
An exaggerated gasp of astonishment come down the line.
‘Isn’t that what you do best? Interfering in official police business. Mr Mayhem.’

It seemed to me that the stripper angle was a bit paradoxical. The women at one time seemed to be shown in a sympathetic light as just plain working women in a seedy profession. A few pages later they were showing their attributes in a stereotypical way.

Perhaps the greatest problem in my mind was it seemed the author was not sure what kind of book he was writing. In one place, the prose would not have been out of place in a Romance novel. In another it seemed to almost become a buddy flick because two of the characters (Evan, the private detective, and Angel, a police detective) seemed to be cut from the same cloth with few differentiating characteristics. I had to keep backtracking to determine who was talking to whom.

None of this was serious enough for me to stop reading. Maybe I was being too critical for what was no doubt intended to be a fun read? Maybe what I questioned would not bother another reader. It is certainly not enough to advise other readers against it. In fact, many readers would probably enjoy the book with unreserved positive comments.

So I will also make a confession: In spite of what was just said, I enjoyed the book enough to download a second in the series by this author.

I started at the end of the series rather than the beginning and now am trying to catch up with earlier books before the next comes out. These earlier books are better, at least better becasue I am not missing any information form earlier book as I am in the later ones. While each book can be read indepedantly I strongly recommend starting at the beginning.

Evan seems to be very good at getting himself into trouble, impending death is around every corner for him .... the nice thing about a series is the knowledge that the main character is highley unlikley to actually die, there are a few times in this book I was grateful for that knowledge as I'm not sure my nerves would have coped otherwise.

Another thing I am beginning to appreciate in the Evan Buckly books is each plot is quite different. Missing persons, cold cases, blackmail ... each book is not just a rinse and repeat of a plot just told in different way as some authors can be guilty of. Harper builds on each book and slowly reveals not just the current story but also the background of Evan's life and what makes him tick.

As with others there is a certain amount of 'whodunnit' allowing the reader to try and put together the clues as they read and the inevitable twist near the end add to the enjoyment. The clues are there but can you decypher them.

Previous books I have read I have found to leave me with too many unanswered questions until the final chapter which is a bit like a reveal all, in this book however there is nothing mysterious, you are able to keep up with each plot turn easily without having to wait till the end to find out what out missed.

Evan Buckley is a HIT!
What a brilliant Book! This is an Evan Buckley thriller and I have to say this was just so tense and full of action I just couldn’t put it down and go to bed! It was addictive, amusing and funny yet quite scary and bloody and it still had the usual Evan Buckley surprising laid back humour and didn’t see that coming ending. It is such an easy enjoyable read.
A full throttle adventure where PI Evan takes on a case for an old friend Jessie who is being blackmailed after being date drugged in compromised situation with two strippers. Evan teams up with Louisville detective a man called Angel after one of the strip clubs confirms her suspicions as to a con going on with some scary going ons. Evan and Angel along with the aid of two of the clubs stripper s set up a sting to bring them down. Unfortunately before they can hapless Jess makes things so much worse he puts Evan and everyone’s life in danger. I enjoyed this book so much it kept me guessing and turning pages right to the ending. Lots of violence humour and a taught storyline that just works so well. In-between this Evan is being taunted by someone over the whereabouts to his missing wife just to add to his stress.
Well written plot with great characters, humour and blood and guts, bit of romance all thrown together for a brilliant ending and a want for more. I highly recommended you read it, but be warned you’ll want more.

“Kentucky Vice”, second in the 'Evan Buckley Thrillers' series probably started out with a carefully developed plot.
Unfortunately, the secondary characters to a man/woman absolutely refused to co-operate and spend the entire book doing what they have promised not to do, disobeying what they have been ordered to do, placing their lives and our hero in danger, and generally getting in the way.
A one-time friend of Evans, now a businessman, is blackmailed after visiting a strip club. Either he coughs up $30,000 of very incriminating photographs will be given to his wife. To make matters worse he doesn't remember anything about the night.
What starts out as a fairly simple case rapidly turns violent and the criminals involved are determined to stay in business by any means necessary.
It all leads to a very satisfying finale in which violence, treachery and sheer luck play equal parts.
It's good fun.
3.5 Stars, raised to 4 Stars.

Even better than book #1

I gave Kentucky Vice five stars for a few reasons: it was even better than the first book of the Evan Buckley series, it's filled with details that made me gasp (and that's not easy to do), and it is an easy, quick read with great descriptions and characters.

Even if you figure out some of the mysteries laid out in the book, you'll still be pleased with all the details and surprising events. In addition to Evan's emotional denial and ongoing mystery about his wife's disappearance, there is the current mystery to solve of the scam being played out at a strip club.

I'll keep reading the series not just to find out about the wife, but to see what crazy case Evan will take next, how he'll get himself into trouble again, and the literal gory details of killings and murders. I just hope book three keeps me as intrigued and invested as this one.

Ludicrous

If you enjoy dark humor and can suspend the need for reason, reality, political correctness and sanity in a plot, you may love this book. Evan Buckley, P.I., takes on a fraud case for a friend who was drugged at a strip club while out of town on business. After arriving back home, Jesse received very explicit pictures in the mail and discovered he'd charged thirty thousand dollars to his credit card for a night he can't remember. He hires Evan to investigate, but becomes impatient and decides to return to Kentucky as well, without telling Evan. Between the two of them, two strippers and a partnerless cop, they manage to put even slasher movies to shame. It gets 3.5 stars for some great suspense.

A little too much killing and maiming of people, but a lot less foul language as it seems many books are now full of. A good story but some what a little on the unbelievable side. I doubt that things could ever transpire in the order they did. I felt like the writer left lots bad people unscathed for his later books in this series. I do think the author did some very good presentation of some characters. However his main character seems to much on the helpless side to be his ace PI. I would never hire him for much of anything. I’m like the main male character to be smarter and maybe a little more of a physical hero. Evan seems like he should stay in the office. I did enjoy the book and was glad to see the detective and the lady Corvette driver take charge while Evan was being a putz.

Great book, Great action and an even better storyline

Evan Buckley really got in a mess this time. Little did he think that he’d make a mess of things when helping Jesse Springer sort out a blackmail issue. Trouble is the issue of his missing wife is not helping him make rational decisions. So he sets out to make a difference, he can’t let this club keep doing this to innocent men. He sets in motion an unstoppable set of circumstances endangering Gina and her friends lives. This is my favourite book in the series so far and I will now be reading the next in the sequence. Evan is a great guy who makes a lot of mistakes. He means well and has a great heart but somehow he always puts his foot in it. Makes for a great read he’s an imperfect hero but the tales are good.

Evan Buckley

I enjoys mystery thrillers a lot and I was not disappointed in James Harper's book of Kentucky Vice. It took me less than 2 days to read! I'm hooked on the series and can't wait for the next one. It has plenty of action, suspense, and even a bit of romance. Evans ear keeps coming into play making you have to read more in hopes of finding out what happened to it. Got to read people I'm not a spoiler! It has its raunchy side and its heart breaking moments too! You just need to read this. If I were you I'd get the first book in the series and start there. They are good!

Second in PI series

Read as a stand-alone, the extensive cast of characters are delineated thoroughly as a complex plot plays out. Some really nasty bad guys, a stupid client, flashes of series backstory, I enjoyed the suspense although the finale did hint as a cliffhanger.

As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, BookBub, BookFunnel, Riffle, Prolific Works, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read.

This is the second book in this series. Evan Buckley can't turn down an old college buddy when he asks him for help. Some how, Jesse Springer has been caught with his proverbial pants down so to speak. Problem is Jesse doesn't remember anything about the pictures. Then there is the psychopathic killer from the past that could just push Evan back into his dark days. Can Evan help his friend or will he go with what he sees and let the chips fall where they may for his friend? Read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed this book, the review is of my own opinion.

Evan Buckley, private detective hired by friend, Jesse, to solve this suspense thriller.
Jesses was at a strip club, remembers going there but doesn’t remember how he got back to his motel. Not so nice pictures delivered to Jesse (he doesn’t remember doing the dirty shown in the pictures). Then a 30K on his credit card from the strip club. What happened and why can’t he remember?
Intriguing with twist and turns, fast paced, and believable fun characters. Try enjoyable and ready for the next book.

When Evan Buckles’s friend Jesse receives a packet of explicit photographs and a blackmail demand, he asks Evan to find out what happened that night at the strip club. Jesse remembers nothing about that night, so Evan leaves town to investigate. Along with a sweet, honest stripper, a detective, and others, Evan and this team plan a sting to bring the crooks down. But is everyone playing on the good side?
I enjoyed the ending of this mystery. The plot line was feasible and characters well developed.

I'm Sorry, I Couldn't Finish This

I read Bad To The Bones and was willing to cut the dumbass Evan a break because he was still new to the P.I. game. But in this book, with all he endured in the previous tome, it's clear that Evan can mostly only think with his little head. He's got no common sense and reacts to everything and uses none of his past experiences as a springboard for present and future situations. I'm sorry I paid for this book. Not gonna be a sucker for any more!

This is the second "Evan Buckley" book I've read and have enjoyed each one which tells me I've found my new favorite author. Even though I want to smack him upside the head when he does something really stupid it doesn't take away from how much I like him. There's loads of action, plenty of mystery and great reading. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in return for a fair and honest review. Believe me, you can ask some authors who are sorry they sent me an ARC, I do not lie!!!

This book held my interest from the start and as it went on the interested you got and in the end you don't want to put it down until you find out what happens. I have to say James Harper , is a good author and I'll be keeping an eye out for more books by this author especially if they are as thrilling as this one. Congratulations on a book that you wanted to read to the end and not give up halfway through.

What a story! I found parts hard to read, put the book down several times to get my heart rate down again. I really like the Evan Buckley character, but, Mr. Harper, I beg of you to find another adjective then retard. "Spread the word to end the word" is a very real campaign, special needs people don't deserve the comparison to the jerks in your story. Personally, I like my books to end with all questions answered, still wondering about the bad guys.

Evan is hired to help a friend in finding who is responsible for the blackmail he's being submitted only to find himself involved in a much bigger corruption and drug case. He'll count on with the help of Angel, a local police detective, his best ally Detective Guillory, and two strippers to solve the case. The story is full of action, has humor, is fast-paced and well-written, and for sure it provides good entertainment for a few hours.

Great thriller

This is an action packed thriller (with some scenarios that are not for the faint of heart) with characters you will love and, I promise, some you will definitely hate. I finished this at 2 o'clock in the morning (sleep is overrated anyway) and downloaded the next one.

This was one of those books that sends the reader (at least this reader) to the dark side of life and makes me wonder if I really want to read it. The more I read, the less willing I was to give up on it. I liked the protagonists, flaws and all, but I prefer them to be smarter than their enemies. I rate this one 4.5 stars.

Looked forward to book 2 and more Evan Buckley, thrilling and packed with action. Kentucky Vice was that and more, a mystery that shook Evan to his core. Pages couldn’t turn fast enough as Mr. Harper’s plot twisted and played out.
The best reading! Suspenseful! Thrilling goodread!
Book 3, must read next. James Harper and Evan Buckley Series definitely worth reading.

Buckley has a new case when old college friend, Jesse Springer, needs his help. He is being blackmailed over revealing photographs that he doesn't remember being taken. Unfortunately I had no sympathy for his predicament and for me there were too many unlikable people, added to the various threats of violence the story wasn't really for me.

Keeps getting better!

I was a bit dubious that this would be as good as the first book, but I needn't have worried. I really enjoyed this story as there was some continuation from the first book but a whole new cast of characters made up the majority of the plot. I like Evan as a protagonist and the other characters are all well written. I look forward to reading more!

On the fence about this one. It was good and bad at the same time. The violent parts are too gritty for me, skim reading over those. Main problem is Evan Buckley. He is such a bungler…hard to have any real feeling for him. He didn’t detect anything, just rushes headlong in multiple directions. I was actually thinking Angel should be the main character. Far more capable and levelheaded.
