Heinrich Christian Wilhelm Busch was an influential German caricaturist, painter, and poet who is famed for his satirical picture stories with rhymed texts.
After initially studying mechanical engineering and then art in Düsseldorf, Antwerp, and Munich, he turned to drawing caricatures. One of his first picture stories, Max and Moritz (published in 1865), was an immediate success and has achieved the status of a popular classic and perennial bestseller.
The first two pieces are what I would think of as typical of Busch's out put stories in verse built up around illustrations. In places you could follow the story just by looking at the pictures, these might be regarded as forerunners to comic books, but I've seen that said of other works on this site.
In both stories one might see rebellion and resistance, on the part of children or animals against the bourgeois world. Revolt however ends in death. Along the way however expect to see the imaginative use of fishing rods and violence of kind familiar from cartoons (noses seized with tongs, a man warmed up by having his stomach ironed etc). And while for the most part I don't much approve of baking children in an oven, grinding them up and feeding them to ducks it is hard to disagree with the baker's opinion Warum ist der Mensch so lecker?! (p73) Why indeed.
The literature dictionary argues that Kritik - a collection of short lyrics was not very successful in Busch's life time which leaves me wondering why it included in this selection. Answer there came none. Other I suppose than having one volume give an impression of Busch's range and tone which tends ultimately to the bleak, revolt and independence fail, the alternatives are limited and self satisfied. Helenne, having newly given birth has lost her husband and her lover, only alcohol is left (Die Flasche wartet mit Geduld...), plainly a sure way to a happy ending - as so many livers will testify.
