When I discovered this on my shelf this year, it brought back lots of memories of reading as a child. This is an excellent way to read to children. Book One is for the youngest and includes lots of Mother Goose Rhymes, Baby Play, Counting Rhymes, Knee-Bouncing Rhymes, familiar short tales like the Goldilocks, Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Little Engine That Could as well as some unfamiliar to me but may be part of others' memory stores. I will pull it off the shelf and have it handy for when the grandchildren visit just to be sure the old tales are passed on.

This book was so fun to read aloud. We all enjoyed it thoroughly.
Some of our favorites:
The Velveteen Rabbit, The Five Chinese Brothers, The Peterkin Papers, The Adventures of a Brownie, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, The Fairy Who Didn't Believe in Children, The Plain Princess, A Rootabaga Story, Bambi, and all the silly poems mixed in (written by Ogden Nash, A. A. Milne, Lewis Carroll, and many more).

I jumped around quite a bit in here, depending on whether I thought my son would tolerate a whole story, or if I'd be lucky just to recite some verse while chasing him around. Starts with nursery rhymes & poetry before progressing into longer tales, many of which I was unfamiliar with. I enjoyed it more than my kid did.

Most precious set of books from my childhood. I used to see them on my sister's shelf when I would visit her, and one day she let me bring them home. Such a great set for any age. One of my favorite possessions.

I received this book in 1957. I was five. I LOVED it! I don't know how many times I've read it. When I found it while cleaning, I had to skim through it again. I'm going to send it to my nephew.

I can (barely) remember my Mother reading the stories in this book to my siblings and myself when we were young. The stories were considered "classics" at the time this book came out, but many are no longer in print.

This was also my introduction to poetry, since there are poems in here that children would find interesting.

All in all--if you are fortunate enough to find a copy of this book and its companions, BUY IT. You won't regret it, and you'll be able to entertain children for years to come with it.
