About the author

Vicente Alfonso (Torreón, México, 1977) is a journalist and author of the novels Bones of San Lorenzo (Huesos de San Lorenzo – Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz International Prize 2015) and A score for a dead woman (Partitura para mujer muerta, Literatura Random House 2008) awarded in México with the National Noir Prize; the short stories books Counting nights (Contar las noches – María Luisa Puga National Short Stories Award) and The Esquilo Syndrome (El síndrome de Esquilo, Ficticia 2007). He compiled and wrote the preface of essays on the literary work of acclaimed José Revueltas entitled Vice live (El vicio de vivir). Vicente has been recipient of the prestigious Foundation for Mexican Literature (twice), the Mexican Fund for Culture and the Arts of Coahuila State and also with a fellowship of the International Cooperation México-USA Program for an Artistic Residence at Winston-Salem (USA). He is currently co-editor of the cultural supplement ‘Confabulario’ of Mexican newspaper El Universal.

Por lo general leer una novela policial es algo light. Es dejarse llevarse por la acción sin ponerle ningún pienso y ver si hay alguna vuelta de tuerca interesante.

Pero Partitura para mujer muerta es otra cosa. Es una labor detectivesca en serio. Las voces narrativas son múltiples, hay muchos recursos literarios, los enunciados pueden ser verdaderos o falsos, hay pistas que se deben releer.

Los sospechosos del crimen son varios y para complicar la historia hay un desfase temporal que provoca que el lector tenga que ordenar cronológicamente la ambigua trama.

Lejos de Sherlock Holmes, estamos ante una ficción hard-boiled. Hay componentes truculentos con extrema violencia, sexo duro y la imagen de una sociedad corrompida, incluida la fuerza policial que sucumbe al deseo.

Si alguien la leyó, que me mande un mensaje. No se todavía quien fue el asesino. La volví a repasar y encontré detalles que me hacen dudar.

Leí la versión de Lectores de la editorial Banda Oriental. No conocía al autor. Buena novela negra con elementos de la realidad mexicana.

My very first book of 2010, and I read it in a matter of hours. The mystery behind Laura Suárez's death and the disappearance of her violin take the reader to different cities, years, places, emotions, etc, etc. We learn how little Life could be valued when petty interests come into play. This is an amazing book, very well written. A work of art. Really.

Despite its attempts to portray a compelling crime story, the narrative is overshadowed by numerous misogynistic comments about women's bodies. This makes it difficult and unpleasant to continue reading. It feels as though the author is overly focused on objectifying women's bodies rather than developing the story.

Una novela que pone notas finas al ir y venir en México, una historia que quizá de forma desafortunada puede ubicarse atemporalmente en cualquier noche en México, una de mis historias favoritas, arte, narrativa y descripciones que se graban, me encanta esta novela policiaca y la recomiendo muchísimo.

Si me gustó. Está interesante la forma en que te muestra la realidad de las cosas. Y me gustó especialmente porque lo encontré en descuento en el supermercado.
