Max Gaines has known one thing all his life: he loves Jamie Matthews. Best friends since childhood, Max and Jamie are inseparable until the day of Max’s sixteenth birthday when he presents as an Alpha instead of an Omega. With Jamie being an Alpha too, they cannot bond and all their dreams of a future together are dashed.

Jameson “Jamie” Matthews has only ever wanted one man, his best friend Max. He doesn’t care when Max turns out to be an Alpha just like him, Jamie is willing to disregard society’s rules and mate with Max anyway. But when Jamie’s rut comes, all their hopes of bonding are in ashes. Jamie joins the Army to hide his pain and to hide from Max.

Left behind, Max is determined to find a way for them to be together. But time is running out as Jamie’s unit is captured by the anti-shifter group The Amity Brethren. Can Max save Jamie in time, or does fate has something different in mind for them?

Don’t get me wrong, I really did enjoy the story. I just wish there was more. Like 2/3 was good, but the last 1/3 was a bit flat for me.

Calling it at 35%

Oh this was such a disappointment. You know those books that have so much wasted potential it actively makes you angry? This was definitely one of those for me.

What I wanted was a story about two Alphas having to navigate a relationship. What I got was...well, I honestly didn't even get far enough to find out how they get together and how they make it work. (The fact that the kindle summary also spoils the plot didn't help...)

Where to even start with this?

The worldbuilding is so sloppy I wanted to scream. The set-up to the conflict is that Alphas cannot mate. Only then it turns out that maybe they could only they'd have to try really, really hard to supress their agressive instincts. Only, no, actually that's not it either! Actually Alphas can't be together because society is super judgemental about these kinds of pairings and...OMFG please decide on what the actual problem here is supposed to be.

Then there's the choppy editing. Time jumps are usually not a problem for me but here the jumps are so abrupt that I had whiplash and was super confused within the first two chapters.

The protagonists inner thoughts are incredibly confused and not in the good way. It's a lot of telling of deep emotional turmoil that never once translates to the reader.

And then add in such disturbing details as the army apparently fighting on US soil against US citizens (I mean even if it a terrorist organnization that's NOT the army's job) without further commment and I'm out.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Alpha’s Law is co-written by Sara York and H.L. Holston and as seems to be the current trend in the genre, the story is told alternately by the two protagonists. The narration is third person, which I personally feel detaches the reader from the characters and events. I was never emotionally invested in Max and Jamie because of this detachment and though events in the story are dramatic, I did not feel that Max and Jamie are ever in danger.

Holston and York’s writing styles do blend together and this allows Max and Jamie to retain their individuality. Initially, it is Max who appears to be the weaker of the pair and this is not only because he is viewed as an inferior Alpha, qualified by his smaller stature and infertility. Max and Jamie seem to exist for one another and it is simply being together that drives their actions. Yet, it is Max who sacrifices the most and risks his own life more than once to save Jamie.

So good, really entertaining

I really enjoyed this story of two young boys who met at school, became best friends, then ordained to be mates only to discover they could not be mated because they were both Alphas. The story of how they overcame this obstacle is worth the read. I loved it.

Love this story! Incredible storyline that captivated me right from the beginning and kept me hooked right through to the very end. Max and Jamie are wonderful characters who have been friends since they were kids and always thought they would be mates. But when they both present as alphas, they have to accept that they can't be mates. A very unexpected twist in the story could change that. It's a great story with drama, suspense, action, twists and turns, and lots of loving. Highly recommend.

Hot men, terrific plot, creative world-building, lots of action, even heart pounding rescues. A great love story! The writers created an interesting and cohesive story that results a complex world that is truly reflects their beautiful writing talent!

i enjoyed reading this story and i really liked both MC's. Max and Jamie are nicely crafted and likable. Their families, especially Jamie's were likable and developed enough to give me a feel for them. Max and Jamie took me on the who spectrum of emotions, from happy to sad and frustrated to relieved and worried and celebrating. Both men were strong and good people.

The story had depth with dealing with the social norms and how these two men could find a way to love each other and be together. I enjoyed the aspect of the story where the norms were viewed from the alpha/omega perspective and one could see how skewed perspectives are for traditional gender roles.

Highly recommend this story and will look for more from these authors in the future!

Fantastic shifter story

I loved the twists and turns this story took me on. Jamie and Max are an amazing couple who go through so much to be together. I could go on and on about this book, but I won't because spoilers, but really, if you're looking for a good gay shifter story, this is a must read.

I enjoyed Alpha's Law, but a review with a major plot spoiler was quoted at the top of the seller's book description. I didn't realize what I was reading until I was 3 sentences into it, and by then it was too late. It ruined the surprise, and dropped my review of this interesting and well written story by a full start. What a bummer...

While I enjoyed parts of this story, I’m a bit disappointed that it went in the direction that it did. I wanted a book that showed that two alphas could mate and be together despite the odds and I got a book where one of the pair was turned into an omega basically allowing them to mate that way. That bugged me. A lot. I understand what the authors were going for, but I just think the story would have been more impactful if the two could have made it work as alphas. Also Max’s change from being a lawyer and contemplating a risky procedure to turn into an omega to joining the military as a super-soldier seemed out in left field for me. Also absolutely no explanation as to how Jamie was changed into an omega other than he may have been part omega all along was sketchy. So while I liked the book enough to finish it, it had a lot of problems for me.

This book was nothing like I expected from reading the blurb. I thought that we would be getting a retired army man returning to his pack and having to deal with his lost love, and a threat that would wipe out his family and friends that would throw the pair into working together and learning to compromise and have a relationship. This is not that book. Instead, we ease into their lives with Max’s move to a new school, and how he meets Jamie, where we also learn of a werewolf hate group, The Amity Brethren.

The book explores gender roles and gender identity through the werewolf ‘genders’ of Alpha, Omega and Beta. Though the Betas were never really explored much, the Alpha paralleled the male gender in our society while the Omega represented the female role, up to and including a lot of 1920s thinking on what was suitable for Omegas. They were deemed unfit for active duty in the army—except in medical roles—despite human women being able to serve.

I found the take on Max not feeling quite right in his body and being told what gender he was going to be, despite that not ‘presenting’ itself until his middle teens, interesting. He never felt like the Omega he was told he would be, and even presented as an Alpha, yet he wished so much he could just be an Omega—how it could make him happier, even though he disagrees with how they are treated. In so many ways I hope anybody who feels disassociated with their gender pushed on them can relate to it, and that it helps them in small ways to know they aren’t alone.

Jamie’s acceptance of Max, and the love he has for Max, is sweet and makes you adore his character even more. Especially when he is faced with the potential hardship and the discrimination they would endure to be together, as it was almost a law that an Alpha could not mate with an Alpha.

I also feel like the threat of The Amity Brethren was never real. They talked about them, how their actions were affecting others, and we even got a rescue mission that showed some of the horrors they perpetrated, but the book never lingered on this and never really allowed our empathy to be engaged. While there was some action, and Max and Jamie did end up fighting some of the Brethren, they were never that immediate.

Ultimately, Alpha’s Law is a book that deals mostly wonderfully with a tough topic that sadly falls into the category of a bit bland.

Good
I received this book by the author for a honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book though it did have its problems like the time jumping through there ages which led me to be, did I miss a bit of the story? and broke the flow of the book for me a bit so therefore my rating is not a 5. That saying the story and characters carried me through and I'm eagerly wanting to know what happens next for Max and Jamie after there tumultuous beginnings of their relationship and of course the breathen an organisation that is trying to wipe out the shifters.
The story begins when Max who is scrawny and picked on comes to the attention of Jamie when a bully starts on max. Max is small and therefore suspected of being an omega though he doesn't always feel that he should stick to omega tendencies though he's been urged to from his mum to prevent him being picked on.
Jamie is popular and feels an instant kinship for Max and intervenes. They feel as if there meant for each other but on Maxs first hunt before transformation they get an unexpected surprise when he turns alpha and is quite dominant. Though there hearts are broken as no two alphas can mate without killing one another they still remain friends even if buried dreams are still simmering away underneath the surface. When they act on an impulse it sets into motion a chain of reactions that will make them feel hardship and loss before they can reach there happiness. I liked the character's and am looking forward to book 2.

Gave 3.5 stars but rounded to 4 for this review

This is a story about what you believed yourself to be and how your life will play out. Then all of a sudden everything changes and you need to learn to adapt and change with it.

Max grew up thinking he was a Omega and then at 16 years old finds out he is really an Alpha. Max is in love with his best friend Jaime and grew up knowing that they would be mates for life. When one day he whole life is turned upside down and they realize they can't be together anymore. As the years go by, Max and Jaime remain best friends but the tension is high between them. They both love each other very much but can't mate because they are both Alpha's and it is against pack law.
Jaime believes they can make it work but some failed attempts later he starts to lose hope. Max isn't a usual Alpha and even though he loves Jaime, he wants him to move on and find a Beta who can give him what Max can't.
Jaime's cousin is killed while in the Army fighting the bad guys and when both go back home to pay their respects something happens and Jaime runs off. He joined the military against his family wishes mostly to get away from Max and the pain of losing him forever.
They definitely have the chemistry going for them and you will find yourself rooting for them to try and make the relationship work.
There are twist and turns in the story especially when Jaime gets taken. Their lives change again and hopefully for the better.
I felt the story started moving very fast once Max goes to rescue Jaime and I would have liked to draw it out more. Max joins the military because he misses Jaime and they he gets him back.
By reading the story you will learn about all the changes to Max and Jaime. I enjoyed that both men realize that they were meant to be together no matter who they are because they are true mates.
This is the first book in a new series from these ladies and will definitely read the next one.

Possible Spoiler ALERT.....I actually really liked this book. H.L. Houston took this book in a different direction then most shifter books go. The fact that both main characters start out as Alphas and one is turned into an Omega is a first for me. I really enjoyed the twists because I can honestly say that I never seen the major twist in this book coming.

Jamie fell in love with Max from the first moment that Max walked into his life in grade school and stood up for him. Jamie always expected Max to be his mate and given that Max is an Alpha and how small Jamie i, Jamie assumes hat he is an Omega. That would make this mating perfect. But not everything turns into a perfect little mating like Jamie and even Max imagined.

Turns out that Max and Jamie are both Alphas. There is a law strictly prohibiting them being together both being Alphas but it is so hard for both men to let go of the hope. More so Jamie. Jamie is determined to figure out a way to turn into an Omega since that is what he always wanted. But Fate has different plans for These two men.

Can Jamie and Max figure out a way for the two of them to be together even though it is not what the shifter law says is acceptable?

This was such an incredible read. As I said there is twists to their book that I did not see coming and I am really hoping that there will be another book. I would really like to see what comes of this book.

Alpha's Law
By H.L. Holston, Sara York

Max and Jamie knew from the moment they met they were meant to be together. Jamie presented as an Alpha. Now they're waiting for Max to present as an Omega. Max has always known he'd be an Omega and can't wait for he and Jamie to finally be together, but when Max finally turns he becomes an Alpha instead. Knowing two Alpha's can't be together they still try to make it work. After one last encounter leaves them both heartbroken Jamie goes off to join the Army leaving Max behind. But Max is strong and determined to find a way for them to be together. They do have their HEA, but not in the way they (or we) expect.

I very much enjoyed this book. I loved both Jamie and Max. The story is written in both their POV. The angst is medium. I could feel the struggles they went through in their relationship. It's definitely in my reread pile and I'm looking forward to their story continuing in the next book.

Something is off in the plot of Alpha's Law.
I liked how this book began, but then the plot started to get weirder and weirder. At 3/4 of this story, nothing made sense to me. So at the end I wasn't even interested in sex between Jamie and Max, or even about their HEA and mating.

A Surprisingly Good Book

This book is a 5 Star because it really took me by surprise. A good surprise.

The characters are well developed, likable, & believable. There are no Billionaires or Royalty that are slumming it with the unwashed masses. The storyline moves ahead at a good pace, slow enough for you to enjoy it but fast enough that you don't lose interest. It's not full of over used & repetitive phrases. i.e. he said, she said, they said, said, said, said & "let out the breath they'd been holding". There's enough foreshadowing to keep your brain busy without giving away the entire plot in the first few chapters. Most importantly, no long winded descriptions of every outfit any & every person wore, or overly long descriptions of places. Sometimes I think that authors tend to forget that sometimes less is more. You can say they went to the mountains to hunt without adding in descriptions of all the flora & fauna that live on it.

3sOf course, the absolute best part of this book is that it's Book 1. That means there should be a Book 2. Even better, the whole series is on Kindle Unlimited so you can read the whole series as many times as you want without it busting your bank account. Now that's a Happily Ever After if I ever saw one. Bottom line, if you made it to here in my review then you're Going to like this book and hopefully the whole series!

Consigliato.

The Blogger Girls

Well, this one diverted way off from where I was expecting it to go. As I read the blurb, got to know Max and Jamie, and watched the storyline play out, I knew what was going to happen…but I could not have been more wrong. I was so completely off from my initial assessment. So, moral of the story? Let it play out and don’t assume.

At first, I was not sure I liked the new direction, but there were little clues along the way, and eventually it made sense. It just took awhile for my mind to wrap around their roles. And then the military thing just seemed to come out of left field, and I knew I had no choice but to stop trying to figure things out and just enjoy the ride.

Max and Jamie were destined for each other, and no matter how convoluted the path was for them to get to the end game, they do get there. And I kinda liked that Jamie never lost his alpha tendencies and Max forced his wolf to accept Jamie as is. It was an eye-opening story, with a subplot of omegas being seen as less than, laws against alphas mating another alpha, and during all of this, the military and experiments aspects keep the reader guessing.

It was good, and made for an enjoyable read. I wish that it was a little more developed. Especially the rescue scene which seemed to come out of left field without any build up, but regardless, it is still recommended.

Overall Impression: I really liked it!

Alpha's Law is quite a unique take on shifters and shifter lore, and I thought it worked well here. Max and Jamie grew up thinking they would mate, that Max would present as an omega to Jamie's very obvious alpha. When they both present as alphas, however, that dream ends. I liked seeing them as they got older, though the jumps in time in the first half were a little abrupt, but the story really gets going at about the halfway point. Events cause Max to pull away, leading Jamie to take off and join the military. When Jamie is captured and tortured by the Brethren, his entire life changes before being rescued. I really liked this aspect of this story. Suddenly being omega allows Jamie's way of thinking to evolve and for him to become more aware of the issues and prejudices omegas deal with every day. It also means there is nothing stopping Jamie from finally being able to mate with his love. But will the Brethren ruin everything and destroy their entire species?

I love the way Max and Jamie grow into their new relationship. I could feel the love they had for each other and the strength of their bond through the writing in this book. And really, they might be strong scary wolves at times, but I kind of thought they were adorable too. I am excited to see where book 2 takes this couple.

✔ Letto!
A me è piaciuto, lettura semplice, bem scritta e anche divertente.
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ e aspetto i prossimi.

This omegaverse book was so entertaining. I was riveted to it from start to finish. The world building was excellent and the character development brought life to the book.
Max and his mother moved to the shifter town of Lyons, Colorado after Max’s father was killed in action. Max is small and an easy target for bullies. It is assumed that when he comes of age he will be an omega. That is especially clear when a young alpha comes to his rescue when he is being bullied. Jamie is a big shifter and obviously will become an alpha, so the attraction between the two boys and later men makes the reader assume they will be fated mates when they grow up.
There are many twists and turns in this story. A hate group that is determined to eradicate all shifters plays a large role in the story, and when Max and Jamie become service members deployed to Afghanistan a branch of these haters is there, as well.
I really liked this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series.

Wolf shifter MPREG DNF

1 star

This book is so confusing and weird. It starts with a strong wolf child defending a weak wolf child. They were inseparable and everyone assumed one should be alpha and the other omega. But rust doesn't happen. They are both alphas. This confused me because how can you have a weak alpha? It's in the definition of alpha to be dominate. Anyway, so the weak alpha wants to be the omega he always wanted to be. (Are they trying to make this like a trans wolf shifter?)

As the story progresses (which BTW is so choppy. The timeline starts around age 13, them the next chapter they are 16, then the next they share an apartment in the city. No warning just BAM changes! )

Without ruining the story within spoilers the alpha, beta, omega thing in this book is so confusing. I got to 50% and just couldn't do it anymore.

Really didn't love the writing style and the time line was weird. I won't be reading any of these authors work.

I was completely unprepared for what occurred in this book. There were so many surprises everytime I got a little complacent - BAM! The writing team of Holston & York really pulled off a great shifter book. This is the First Book of a Wolf shifter trilogy by one author new to me and another that I'm quite familiar with. Despite the 100s of shifter tales I've read this is the first time I've encountered the unique scenario of two Alphas falling in love without a third Omega mate that connected them as fated mates.

This story was so exciting with so many twists and turns. I hated the necessity of having to occasionally put it down. It has danger, hate groups, the military, experimentation, disgusted family & pack members, a shattering liss. Roommates, bullies, aggressive Alpha instincts, but a determination to be together despite the odds being against them. This story is a rollercoaster ride. Strap in and hold on tight. Be careful it just might knock your socks off.
