Little Children: The Shooting Script

Rate this book
The new film from Oscar®-nominated writer/director Todd Field (In the Bedroom), based on the acclaimed novel by Tom Perrotta, starring Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, and Patrick Wilson.

Little Children centers on a handful of individuals whose lives intersect on the playgrounds, town pools, and streets of their small community in surprising and potentially dangerous ways. While it is based on an acclaimed novel, Todd Field and Tom Perrotta wanted to create a film that stood on its own, independent of the book. Field says, "The struggle for identity is what these characters battle from the start; it leads to a hunger they are unable to satiate—violence and fear hold sway. The shame of how they see themselves when the fingers start pointing. It was with this idea in mind that Tom and I began our work together."

Tom Perotta elaborates, "For me, as a novelist, the attraction of a film adaptation lies precisely in this opportunity to re-imagine my book with someone else, and explore new possibilities for the characters and the story."

This fascinating Newmarket Shooting Script® book documents the successful collaboration between these two talented artists. The book includes an introduction by Tom Perrotta, the complete shooting script, critical essays, a Q&A with Todd Field, a section of 23 color photos, and the complete cast and crew credits.

This script is so fucking good. Currently looking to read screenplays and watch stuff with a third person omniscient narrator, and I think Little Children and Y tu Mama Tambien are my two favorite examples of this.

Also read Todd Field's Tar the next day, which is technically not published so not on Goodreads for me to comment on, but it was also a really great screenplay. Although I did read somewhere that they shot his first draft, which I find rather annoying as a struggling screenwriter! The bastard.

Picked up this one at a clearance sale when the book store at Kendall & 107th closed.

It's an interesting story of people who live in the same neighborhood. A few are stay at home parents, one is a convicted child molester, one is a closet internet porn perv and there are a few others. Each chapter tells the story from a different person's point of view. The main story line is between Todd and Sarah who begin an affair. It's the story of the ugly duckling meets the swan.

The insight the author gives each character is very interesting. Every person has a back story - you are really able to understand the backgrounds and motivations of different people. The way they arch and come together at the end is like watching ballet.

Good story about the choices we make and living up to the decisions. About not being happy in marriage/life and choosing different. Sometimes it takes a situation for people to realize what they truely need out of life. Even if in the end it isn't with the distraction, but sometimes to just be. I did think the whole back story about the conficted sex offender was too much. Too many scenes with him and his mom.

This one was a little different from what I normally read, a bit steamy in parts. Made me be glad my husband is not a "stay at home dad!"
