Emmaline and the Second Summer tells the story of Emmaline Hazeltree, a young girl living a rather ordinary and sensible life until, one day, everything changes. Emmaline is sent to spend the summer on her grandfather’s farm and, on the way there, her parents announce they may be splitting up. She is heartbroken, but decides to make an effort at having an adventure over the summer, as her parents hoped she would. Adventure seems impossible with her worries and the loneliness of the farmhouse, until something extraordinary happens. Emmaline is transported to a different time and place, and she discovers something remarkable: that her world is all one great story, and there are those who ensure the story plays out as planned. They are the storysmiths, and Emmaline Hazeltree soon finds herself with the choice to become one of them. And, of course, where there are storysmiths, there will be storychangers, those seeking to disrupt the great story. Working on the side of goodness, Emmaline soon learns, is not always the simplest task. Can a girl whose own story seems to be falling apart really help put the world's story together?
"That's what I've been trying to tell you. We are in a story. Our world is a story - a good one. And that is why you are here. For the story."
Emmaline Hazelton is sent to spend the summer with Grandfather while her parents work through some problems they are having. Upon arriving, Emmaline's Grandfather gives her a magic ring that transports her back in time and she becomes a "storysmith", tasked with making sure everyone's life story remains safe from the "storychangers."
This story was beautifully written, with well developed and adorably sweet characters, and a story line that everyone can relate to - life is a story; it's up to you how you shape it.

Book review of: Emmaline and the Second Summer 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 stars
Emmaline Hazeltree was a girl who loved a good story, and she was about to be within the greatest story of her life. Emmaline was a sensible girl who rarely showed emotion. Emmaline is being taken to her grandfather’s farm to spend the summer. She can feel that something is not right but she cannot put her finger on it at the time. As she travels with her parents to her grandfather's, her parents give her some news that will change her life forever. After Emmaline is dropped off, her grandfather gives her a special gift from her grandmother that takes her on the journey of her summer. Emmaline is transported to the past where she learns she is a storysmith, who journey’s through stories making sure that they stay on the correct path. She is sent on journey’s from the Author of the stories. She must also make sure that the storychangers do not disrupt the story and change history. Along the way, she meets her great-grandmother and great-grandfather and helps save a little girl who will become a great inventor in the future. 📖📖 Emmaline and the Second Summer is a quick read, but one I wish would have continued. I was not ready for the story to be over. I was so excited when I saw that @britthampton_writes is already working on another Emmaline adventure. I cannot wait to get my hands on it. I think this book would be a great read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction as the majority of the book is set in the past. I would recommend this book to anyone 10 or older. This is a book you don’t want to miss!

Emmaline Hazeltree is sent to live with her grandfather at his farm for the summer. As her life begins to unravel her parents give her some bad news on the ride over. Her parents need time apart and while they work some things out, they want her to have a fun adventurous summer and not a boring one.
Once her parents drop her off and leave her grandfather hands her a beautiful ring. But what Emmaline doesn't know is that the ring has magic. It transports her to the Place of Stillnes where she sees her friend Susannah. Susannah tells Emmaline that she is her guide and Emmaline is a storyguide. Meaning she has an opportunity to move through time and help the story happen as it should.
When she walks over the bridge her adventure begins, and she goes back in time before her grandparents met. But as her adventure goes, it's up to her to stop storychangers from making small changes and messing up the story. Very well written, short sweet chapter book of an unforgettable adventure..
Thanks to Britt Hampton for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own. This is a beautifully written middle grade book that sweeps you write into the story. Emmaline is sent to her grandfather's house when her parents are going through some marital issues. She is given a magical ring that brings her to a different time and place which leads to a big adventure! She must deal with loneliness, anxiety, and the storychangers that want to change the story of life. I found myself quickly turning the pages to find out more. This book reminds me that life really is a story that we create every single day! I TRIED wearing my fancy Mother's Day ring to get transported a bit! Didn't work for me!
Overall this short read was absolutely adorable. I would recommend it to younger kids. This book challenges your imagination and forces the reader to look at the bigger picture. I loved the connection between the characters and the writing. You can follow the adventure of Emmaline as she learns to trust her feelings and enjoy her summer. My 9 year old read this for her book club so I read it too. I caught on to the allegory, but my daughter didn't. Emmaline has an adventure and learns through it that we are all in a story, and "it is through the story that one gets to know the writer".
an endearing, old-fashioned girl + a magical adventure + sweet, but not sappy! • “For Emmaline was a girl who dearly loved a good story.” • instagram book reviews @brettlikesbooks

“Her name is Emmaline Hazeltree, and to her, good stories are the best of things.”
This was an absolutely delightful adventure story with an utterly delightful heroine. Emmaline is a practical, serious girl for whom the world makes perfect sense. But that all changes when her parents take her to spend the summer at her grandfather’s farm, and announce on the way that they may be separating. Heartbroken and lonely, Emmaline isn’t sure she’ll be able to enjoy her summer at all. Until something truly extraordinary happens, and Emmaline is magically transported to another time and place where adventure awaits…
“It had been a summer full or ordinary things. There had been chickens to feed, dishes to wash, and sunsets to see. But Emmaline found all of those things full of wonder as she sat in the evenings with her grandfather, out on his front porch… She realized then, on those quiet evenings on the farm, that everything was a part of the story, that she was a character, that life was an adventure, and that while sometimes there may be dragons to slay and treasures to find, other times there would be stillness to take comfort in…”
I loved this story so much! I could honestly feel the love Ms. Hampton put into writing it as I was reading it, and I cannot wait to share it with my daughter in another couple of years! It was a joy to read and I had chills as I was finishing it. I will be anxiously awaiting Emmaline’s next adventure!
At first I liked this book, then I wasn't sure about it, now after finishing it, I really do like it. It's so easy to read and I love Emmalines personality. It's definitely meant for a younger audience than myself, but I still enjoyed it. It has also gotten me out of a little book slump. I'm definitely going to be giving this book to my younger sister, when she learns to read of course...haha <3

Emmaline and the Second Summer is a delightful middle grade novel about a young girl who discovers that she’s a storysmith and goes on a time traveling adventure. Emmaline has always loved books and stories. She is sent to her Grandfather’s farm for the summer while her parents try to figure out some “grown up” things. Her very first day there’s she stumbles into an adventure. There are a lot of important themes in this book about looking for guidance but also about doing what you feel is right. I admired Emmaline’s honesty and determination. There’s enough action and adventure to keep a young (or not so young) reader interested. Overall I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who loves middle grade fiction.
