Henri Nouwen, who died in 1996, was one of the most outstanding spiritual leaders of the recent times. A priest, academic and author of over 40 books, his ministry found a new depth of expression when he joined l'Arche. This work is created from an interview with Henri Nouwen in which he reflects on the themes that have inspired his writings.
A quick read - read it within an hour - which deeply inspires the reader to make room for Jesus through silence and solitude, community and prayer, to operate out of our belovedness, refuse the temptation of victimhood, and to live an active life of faith. I'll likely read it over again as it has the effect of strengthening your spirit and realigning the reader to intimacy with God. (I love the idea of using this for a spiritual retreat - there are reflection questions for each chapter.)
A small book recording a conversation. many of Nouwen's great themes are here divided into 14 chapters on 48 pages. One of things that caught me was not the themes which are familiar but the creative response to situations and circumstances that seems to be called forth. Also the importance of choice and the problems of emotional experience. "A lot of people are asking for the spiritual life and what they really want is to feel good about themselves." For Nouwen the contemplative life is not a retreat from the world but actually to a concern for the world.
I keep this book permatnely on my night stand. I will never be bored by the words in this book. I love it because through it...I know I am the beloved.
