The Faeryland Companion
From folk mythology and classical theater to contemporary film and dance, the mischievous and playful faery has fascinated mankind for thousands of years. These intriguing and ethereal creatures, with the myths and legends that surround them, have never ceased to inspire artists and illustrators.
From Puck to Peter Pan, children and adults alike have never really stopped believing in faeries. The earliest religions and superstitions had their spirits and hobgoblins, symblizing the forces of nature or watching over human infidelities. Although based on earlier myths and traditions, Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was a huge influence on the fantasies of generations of artists. Highly fashionable in the eighteenth, century, faery paintings were a foil for discreet eroticism in a time of prudity, and captured the spirit of national pride in their portrayal of an idealized English landscape. With the invention of photographic techniques came the opportunity to create realistic 'spirit' photographs and elaborate hoaxes, which captivated many respected figures.
Accompanying the wide selection of bewitching paintings and engravings, Beatrice Phillpotts follows the image and influences of faeries, from ancient mythology, through Shakespeare and Victorian art, to modern manifestations of faery stories.
As well as her two Faery books, "Faery Painting" (1978) and "Mermaids" (1980), both of which are regarded as classics, Beatric Phillpotts is the author of seven children's stories and one junior non-fiction title, and was one of the principal contributors to the bestselling "Dinosaurs" (1990-) and "True Action Adventures of the 20th Century."

Tengo 20 años y en cuanto vi este libro no pude resistirme.
Las hadas han estado presentes en mi vida (y en la de todos) desde pequeña. Salían por todas partes: libros, dibujos, películas Disney... Y siempre me dejaba embelesar por sus historias y aventuras, pero nunca me paré a pensar más allá de lo que allí se decía sobre ellas.
Este libro es un recopilatorio de la historia de las hadas desde siglos atrás y se centra, sobretodo, en leyendas y cuentos de Inglaterra, Escocia e Irlanda.
En un principio, las hadas eran concebidas de tamaño humano o incluso más grandes y se las asociaba con el mal. Ahora, en cambio, la mayoría de veces se las representa de tamaño reducido y de buen corazón. Esta y otro tipo de evoluciones son de las que trata el libro.
También contiene algún que otro relato corto o canción y muchos, muchísimos dibujos preciosos y de gran tamaño de hadas y otros seres mágicos.
Me pareció útil, sobretodo si quieres escribir un libro que trate sobre ello, ya que te resume todo lo que se sabe del tema.

I bought this book ages ago, when I was collecting anything and everything related to The Other Crowd. Understandably, since I actually started going through my library, I have found some of the books are very "twee" and "fluffy bunny", which is of no interest to me. I absolutely love the format and the accompanying illustrations are fabulous, so I was hopeful.
This book is a well-researched volume of Fairy artwork, which includes stories (both fictional and documented encounters) as well as poetry. It is so interesting to see how the folklore evolved over time and also how human beings made certain "adjustments" to fit the time (I'm looking at you, Victorian England), as well as their own sense of morality.
One doesn't get the sense that the author actually believes in The Other Crowd, so that is a bit of a drawback. But on the whole I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book.

Preciosas ilustraciones y un excelente texto (que incluye algunas leyendas conocidas) componen este libro sobre hadas. Interesante viaje a un mundo fascinante y lleno de color y belleza... No, en esta vida no todo es la "Tink" del repulsivo Disney... En fin...

Pretty to look at but not much to read and somewhat repetitive. Pet peeve - none of the lovely illustrations were conveniently labeled so you a) knew what you were looking at and b) who did the art.

EL MUNDO DE LAS HADAS de Beatrice Phillpotts es una deliciosa obra que nos aproxima a este universo mítico, eso sí acotado a las manifestaciones de la cultura británica; obra, por otro lado, que no resulta un mero catálogo a modo enciclopédico de los que tanto abundan, sino que se estructura desde un punto de vista temático, a saber: “El reino de las hadas”, “La naturaleza de las hadas”, “El pueblo de las hadas”, “Trabajos y diversiones”, “Las hadas y los humanos”, “El Arte y el país de las hadas”.
Así, en cada apartado dividido a su vez en varios subapartados, Phillpotts hace que se den la mano folclore, literatura y arte, ofreciendo, como resultado, un más que entretenido y didáctico volumen el cual descolla por la constante inclusión de referencias a leyendas, testimonios, ensayos, poemas y, sobre todo, obras pictóricas que hacen de la lectura un sumo delecte visual.
Por tanto, el lector no solo aprenderá de manera amena sobre el folclore británico de las hadas y sus diferentes manifestaciones, sino que también se le presentarán nuevos umbrales, gracias a la profusa intertextualidad de la obra, para investigar ulteriormente sobre cuentos y baladas que remontándose a la época medieval, véase “Tomás el Bardo” o “El joven Tam Lin”, pasando por otras modernas como “Nymphidia” de Michel Drayton o las archifamosas de Shakespeare, terminan en la propia época victoriana, donde el género féérico estuvo en boga y produjo manifestaciones interesantes. Y es que EL MUNDO DE LAS HADAS enhebra de forma sencilla pero rica, la relación de las artes con este universo sobrenatural, mencionando a dramaturgos, eruditos, poetas, pintores e ilustradores que le prestaron atención.
Cabe apuntar que este volumen esta cuajado de ilustraciones que se integran perfectamente con los textos y al final se ofrece una tabla para no perdernos detalle. Esto sumado a esos dos anexos finales como aquel dedicado al ilustrador Brian Froud (cuya obra HADAS realizado en conjunto con Alan Lee recomendamos) conocido entre otras cosas por haber participado con Jim Henson en películas tales ‘Cristal Oscuro’ o ‘Laberinto’; así como ese otro dedicado al célebre caso de las hadas de Cottingley que tanto revuelo levantó cien años ha en Inglaterra y al que Conan Doyle dedicó el caso, hacen de este libro un más que interesantísimo y recomendable trabajo que a buen seguro hará disfrutar no solo a los curiosos, sino también a lo interesados por estas materias, e incluso a escritores e ilustradores que necesiten de un libro básico que ofrezca multitud de referencias para ahondar en este mundo lleno de encantamientos.

If you have grand daughters, you know about fairies! Its about time you read this book to get the complete historical accuracy about these little creatures and how they originated. Far from the classic Disney interpretation, fairies have quite a diverse nature and background coming from mythology and ancient folklore to Shakespeare and Victorian art and finally modern stories. This book has beautiful illustrations which certainly add to the enjoyment.

Interesting to read, but two complaints...at times the background image made it very hard to read the text, and the artwork was only identified at the very end, not on the pages where the image was printed.

References historical literature and artworks to give a comprehensive overview of Fairyland. I cannot get over how beautiful the artwork is!

This book has several different artists with different stories in it. I really enjoyed looking at all the various artists and stories in the book. It was great because it made it feel like many books instead of one large book. It would make a nice book for someone who is a fantasy lover or someone who loves faeries.
