Charles Repington is the third son of the Duke of Castborough. He's not in line to inherit a title, lands, or social standing. He is, however, a war hero.
Beatrice Taltham is the daughter of a baron. She's also the daughter of a gambler. Her father is not present in her life much at all and she longs to get away from her terse and bossy mother.
These two are a perfect match, but they're not meant to be together. There are too many hurdles for them to pursue a life together. Or can the obstacles be finally set aside?
Straight forward read. It was pleasant if slightly predictable. Some bits didn’t feel quite right. ‘Charles had danced nearly every dance with her’. Well my understanding was more than 2 dances was scandalous and you you would be getting betrothed, so the next part of story would be different as Charles had effectively already declared himself. Also the actual ending with Lady Judith and Mr Townsend having to get engaged as having been alone together, but it’s just been established Townsend had been poisoning his brother and the constable is coming. Strange situation which I think needed clarifying. Would Lady Judith be forced to marry a poisoner, or not marry because he is a poisoner trying to kill his brother? Either way she’s seriously ruined !! Needs some explanation I think.
