Is it too much to ask for a relationship that works? When Stella Grant realises her perfect romance is a lie and that she's the other woman, she flees to her remote cottage in the Highlands to lick her wounds. Billionaire currency trader Jack Maclean has nothing but contempt for the woman who stole not only his sister’s fiancé but quite possibly a family heirloom to boot. Nonetheless, he wants answers and he intends to get them. A quick trip north should do the trick. Never in a million years could he have predicted a kamikaze sheep and inclement weather would leave him stranded. Jack might be gorgeous but Stella isn’t in the market for a man, especially one who hates her. No matter how attractive he finds her Stella is the very last person Jack should want. The trouble is, they’re all alone and the chemistry is irresistible, and, well, what happens in Scotland stays in Scotland, right?
If the purpose was for me to enjoy the story and route for the two protagonists then the author truly failed because there is nothing attractive, interesting or enjoyable about a H who has loved, lost and continuously mourning his one true love throughout the book! If I was suppose to believe that he found another "soulmate", then she failed because there is absolutely NOTHING I hate more then an author who inserts another love in the main story! For me, the true romance in this read was the H & his dead wife. That is the relationship I would have loved to read about. The female protagonist in this story was just a rebound for me - even though I really loved her and wished she gave both H & his bitchy sister the finger and told them to get lost!!!
And while I'm on the subject, could someone explain to me why in every read lately when a Hero has lost a dead wife or fiancee, he stays celibate for YEARS mourning the lost love until he meets heroine. But in every second-chance romance, when H leaves h (the love of his life), he immediately moves on to OW(s) - never staying celibate for her!
These are major pet peeves that are ruining my fictional romances and will soon make me stop reading them all together!
I read it the second time. I’m better at picking things these days, and this time I actually believe they’d have been together even if the baby didn’t happen.
Well at least the hero would have tried, I guess h may not have been too keen since she wasn’t really a fan of him and she was quite self sufficient.
He was after all going to go meet the h for NO logical reason just before she showed up.
I would have given it a solid 4 star if the sister picked up STI from the OM and died somewhere in a ditch though.
It was very safe! I think H was a virgin before his first wife or may be had one partner. He was not only celibate but extremely uninterested in sex until the h. He was plenty interested with the h. Poor guy was absolutely not cut out to be a billionaire. Since absolutely failed manwhore 101. His first thought after hearing about the pregnancy was: “first woman in fucking interested in after my wife and I had this mind blowing sex and she fucking gets pregnant? This is my punishment for having the best sex of life?” Second thought “I’ll have to convince her to get an abortion. By explaining logic, and risks, and then I’ll hide her away and I’ll never ever have sex in my whole life”! Well at least you can see he was thinking of still holding onto the h even without the baby.
The author dropped hints throughout the book or at least tried to. But TBH, they’re REALLY really subtle. So subtle that they don’t build up to work as a shield when the hero finally blows it. Half the book was very well done, then other half was pure lazy. It was like so huge goddamn angsty build up to the conflict, then poof! Flat. We get a one line about heroine’s neglectful parents, a 3 liner for hero’s reluctant parents and a two paragraph grovelish apology with a hint of HEA for bovine sister in the next book. So yeah, nah!
####################################### Old review 26/6/16
Hero REALLY was in love with his high school sweetheart dead wife. So much so that he lived like a monk for 4 years until he met the heroine. He was IN love with the wife. If she was alive, there’d be no story so heroine was clearly second best here. To be fair, hero didn’t look at any other woman after the heroine either. But still, I didn’t SEE the moving on part. I was TOLD he moved on. Heroine didn’t even understand she could be the source of his concern not the memory until he says it almost at the last page. His sister is a cow. She desperately believed heroine deliberately seeked her fiancé and seduced him and he couldn’t be at fault because as her brother has also pointed out to her that heroine is plain an unattractive. So why the hell would either her fiancé or her brother ever make a move on her??? And it was because of that callous comment by the hero that the bitch gained the footing! Even with proof, she didn’t give an inch to heroine and heroine was supposed to feel sympathetic towards her? Hero also NEVER stopped her when she spoke unkindly of heroine. He had zero possessiveness and zero trait of an alpha. I didn’t believe anything would’ve happened if heroine didn’t become pregnant. She at least would’ve moved on because she was way above his league. She’s so much better than him and he truly never deserved her.
The book was below average for me. I totally agree with Kiki. They wouldn't have been together if not for the pregnancy. I didn't feel any chemistry between them.
I did enjoy this story quite a bit, and it had a smidgen of feels to it. The ending though was a bit fluffy though. I can't imagine real life men actually talking the way Jack at the very end of this story, whether they are in love or not.
Reading the blurb I knew going in to expect some drama. The cover pretty much gives it away with its sweet baby bump out to here look but this book surprised me.
Stella is not a home wrecker – no matter what people are saying about her. When she finds out her boyfriend isn’t the “one” because he’s about to say “I do” with his fiance, Stella is mortified and ashamed to be the other woman in this scenario. Embarrassed and feeling bombarded with the unwanted extra attention, she leaves to lick her wounds in peace.
Except that Jack shows up. He was only looking out for his sister. He never planned to be so drawn to Stella. But they meet at a time when both are vulnerable and hurting. They find comfort in each other and one thing leads to another and two people with bruised hearts find a silver lining. Sorta . . .
What I liked: The writing style was smooth. It drew a picture of two people that you can relate too. They weren’t OTT or in your face. They were everyday people that deal with some awful past trauma. For the most part, both Stella and Jack were characters that, while you don’t instantly fall in love with, you do get to see them go through their own personal growth. The underlying note of hope and forgiveness had a strong vibe and that rated the 3 stars for me. It would have rated higher but for the extremely aggravating Cora character. I couldn’t stand her snarky attitude and couldn’t get over the fact she chooses to believe her lying cheating ex and places all the blame on Stella. Granted she didn’t know her but has she never heard it takes two to tango???
Memorable Moments: Stella’s sheep. I know, right! But I have a soft spot for animals and these guys are really good listeners, Lol!
Also Jack’s big gesture was sweet. I’m a sap for all that mushy stuff.
Would I recommend? If you like surprise babies and marriage in name only tropes.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Yet another tough review to write. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. Plenty of angst, a pleasant strong female and an all bark and barely a bite man who couldn't pull himself together and get out of his own head. Past aside, he was a drama king. A role most often reserved for women. I loved how Stella challenged Jack at every turn. She took no prisoners. She carried this story. Jack was background filler and his sister was a witch on a broom, happy to say her couple of appearances were enough for me. This is a short and quick read. Fairly predictable and I might have liked it better were Jack a bit stronger in his role and not so self involved. It's just ok.

This was the first Lucy King book I've read and it won't be my last. Stella Grant is hiding away in a small cabin out in the middle of nowhere. She had her heart broken by the man she thought might be the one when she'd discovered, in truth, she was the "other woman"! Ben, or rather, Brad (his real name), already had a fiancee and was just using Stella.
Jack MacLean is on a mission to find the woman who seduces his sister's fiance and make her pay. A billionaire, he has the means and wherewithal to do it too. Then he meets Stella and finds things aren't exactly the way they seem. He's attracted to her right away and, even more surprisingly, he actually likes her. Instead of being bent on destroying her, he wants to know her better.
What follows is a delightfully entertaining read that I breezed through in one sitting. I love spirited heroines and heroes who won't back down from a fight. While the two, Stella and Jack, butt heads from the start, they manage to find their happily ever after in the end. There's a couple of twists in the story that I don't want to give away here but I can tell you that Jack's wife died, along with their unborn child, which makes him reluctant to get involved but Stella is a hard person to resist given her personality and, of course, her beauty. This is one I definitely recommend.
One simple reason: I'm not feeling it. Maybe I'll finish it some other time.
Observation: It doesn't seem as the h will be second best. I can clearly see the H is feeling things he's never felt before. Definitely more passion in bed.
A great start to a new series. Jack has come to Stella to confront her on breaking up the engagement of his sister only to find to find him in a situation that will change his life. Get ready for a roller coaster of emotions that will take you on the ride of your life. Where they can't deny the chemistry between them but will it last for a life time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so many emotions that Jack was going through, so afraid to open his heart again. Stella is use to being on her own, a very strong person. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. A quick read that I highly recommend.
Stella Grant discovers on New Year's Eve that her boyfriend Ben of the last few months is actually Brad and engaged to another woman. Devastated and feeling bad about being the other woman she runs off to her cottage in Scotland to lick her wounds and express her feelings through her painting.
Jack Maclean is the brother of Brad's fiancee, Cora. His sister is devastated and a valuable family heirloom has gone missing. Jack and Cora assume that Stella has deliberately seduced Brad and stolen the heirloom. Incensed, Jack hires a private detective to track Stella down and he hares up to Scotland to confront the scarlet woman, not realising that she is just as much a victim as Cora.
An isolated cottage, an unmade road, angry accusations, all lead to heightened passions. Ashamed of their one night stand Stella and Jack part company, until an unexpected consequence of their night together occurs. But what kind of relationship could ever develop between a man and the woman who ruined his sister's life?
This was an enjoyable read. It's a familiar plot but the English/ Scottish setting and the likeable characters made this feel fresh. Although Jack and Stella have issues from their pasts, they deal with them maturely and they are big enough people to recognise when they made a mistake.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I'm a ball of mixed emotions with this story. 3 stars.
I feel like the plot is totally given up by the cover so you know at some point it's going to happen which kind of ruins the surprise. I personally feel like had it been kept under wraps it would have made a great plot twist, especially under the circumstances in which they met.
I really enjoyed Stella as a character. She was strong and fierce which she needed to be to put up with the bull she did. Extremely relatable in her troubles and my heart went out to her for the positions she was put in. She was funny, sweet and grounded. Her thoughts and actions showed her sincerity and honestly she's the glue that held this story together. I feel a little lost when I comes to jack because for a massive portion of this story I feel like he's an outsider looking in. I understand that he's been through a horrific loss but it doesn't excuse his constant shitty actions. There are times when he's super sweet and caring towards Stella but I just felt like he gave the cold shoulder for most of it so couldn't really connect to his character until the end in which by that point didn't feel enough to love him although I didn't hate him either.
I felt like Cora was an unnecessary headache in this book. She was rude self intitaled and a royal bitch even after she was told the situation. It's not often I instantly dislike a character but she was one of them times. I just hope she can redeem herself in her book next.
This story isn't a bad one and it had so much potential!. I enjoy the authors style of writing and I loved Stella. It's written well and takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. I haven't read anything like this plot before so it was different and I enjoyed that to!.
I feel like if it had more of Jack and Stella happy together I would of loved this. But honestly it was a decent read with some great chemistry and a pretty hot build up.

A well written and an easy to read romance novel with little angst, a lot of passion, a bit predictable plot and a heroine who carried the story with her strong character. This was the age-old story of accidental pregnancy after a one night stand that should have never happen. There's the billionaire, the strong heroine who grew up alone, and family who causes drama. There was nothing that I didn't like about the story, it is a good, solid tale about falling in love and dealing with your past. Jack Maclean was not as strong and confident as I would have preferred. He is stuck in his past, he has not dated since his wife died four years ago. A wife who was pregnant and was the love of his life since the tender teenage years. He is lost in his mind, has no idea what he wants from the future, I felt like he was unraveling right in front of my eyes. He was not in touch with his feelings, would rather avoid them or talking about them giving Stella Grant a challenge to get through to him. But Stella was well equipped for the challenge. She had made a mistake in the past by trusting a wrong man and Jack didn't seem much more promising prospect. But Stella is strong, professional, capable to take care of herself, successful with her career, and in no need of Jack to rescue her or to take care of her or the baby on the way. It is Jack's choice just how much involved he wants to be with the baby. Stella and Jack fumble with emotions, communications, and family drama surrounding them. They try to get to know each other and learn as much of each other as they are comfortable with sharing, it just seems that Jack's limits are tight and involve no feelings what so ever. Scorching hot passion, difficult emotions, the enticing setting of Scotland countryside alternating with the busy London, provided a good, solid romance story, a great getaway for an evening. ~ Three Spoons
Sometimes I just want to read a simple easy romance, and this was perfect yesterday when that was my mood. I'd just finished an intense fantasy read and wanted something to relax with.
Stella is lovely, and I felt so sad that she hadn't any decent family, and her childhood left her so reserved she didn't even have any real friends. No wonder she was taken in by the jerk Brad, who neglected to tell her, outright lied when asked, that he was engaged. That's not how his ex-fiancee sees it though, to her Stella is what Brad tells her, someone who came on to him, seduced him, knowing he was engaged, and wouldn't stop harassing him. Her brother hates to see her so upset, so he determines to find Stella, get answers for his sister, and find the missing heirloom they believe she has stolen. When he sees Stella though he's hid by an immediate bout of lust, an attraction he feels hard to ignore. At first he's all in her face, but when he calms he thinks on what she says and realises it makes sense, it fits the person she is and who Brad is, who he always had doubts over. And that attraction – it just won't go away.
Trouble is what happens in Scotland doesn't stay there, and some weeks later they reconnect. It isn't easy though, they don't know each other, his sister hates her, both Stella and Jack have reasons for not being in a relationship. Is there any hope for them? Well, it was a great story seeing all the issues and how they affected the story, how both Stella and Ben reacted to them. I really enjoyed it. Its not a story I'd re-read, a little light for that but one I loved as a one off read.
Stars: Five, a fun, easy read, that pulled at my emotions.

I liked this story, it has a solid plot line and a really strong female lead in Stella.
I did find it a bit unrealistic that two people with so much emotional baggage, could just get over it all in they ways they did. I wish that Jake had been a bit stronger and emotionally deeper,
I felt that the cast list of just the two main characters and meeting just one/two other characters (though I guess we heard about 5 more) was a little restrictive.
Finally, I agree with other reviews that the book cover kind of spoils some of the story twists.
While the book wasn't faultless I enjoyed and and wanted to keep going to see how it ended. I enjoyed the authors writing style and I would consider reading the next book in the series.
I received a copy of this book for free from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
This was a freebie on Amazon & it was pretty good! I generally have bad luck with the freebies.
First in the series. I put this on my Harlequin shelf, though it's not a Harlequin. It's the right length though, & the right storyline. This has the heroine wronged by a loser, secret baby & tortured hero tropes. The heroine has been tortured by her past too, but she at least went to therapy.
You can get the premise by reading the synopsis. The drama is surprisingly low key, but interesting. I love these stories about regular women winning over the handsome, buff billionaire. It's not real life, but a girl can dream!
Jack Maclean, a billionaire trader sets out to find the woman that came between his younger sister and the man she loved. In the process of finding Stella Grant, artist he realizes that she was lied to and left with the bad feelings of being 'the other woman' and has retreated to a remote cottage in Scotland. In the process of sorting out what really happened, he finds Stella attractive and makes His Best Mistake ever.
His sister is still mad, Stella turns up at his office six weeks later expecting his child, he is an emotional wreck about the situation where he lost his first wife when she was pregnant four years earlier. Stella suffers from lack of self-esteem and never feeling she is good enough. This sets the story line for a sometimes funny, almost romantic courtship where neither of them can figure out how the other one feels. The emotional ups and downs kept the pace just right and what Jack and Stella feel is deep. I think it was Stella talking to the sheep that started all the trouble in the first place that brought the story full circle to a very satisfying end.
This is the first book that I’ve read from Lucy King and I really enjoyed reading this book. Jack may had sought Stella out to confront her and ask her why she slept with Cora’s fiancé but once he saw her the sparks just started flying. Jack may have been totally wrong about Stella’s character and after listening to her side of the story, feelings/lust wins out. They both promised each other one night but it was a night that had serious consequences. Both Jack and Stella helped each other out by getting over their past and becoming stronger individuals. A must read!

This is my first read by this author. The premise drew me in. I enjoyed the female lead quite a bit. But I have to say that overall, the story telling was just ....ehhhh.... Not too exciting but not too disappointing either. I will give the sister's story a try before totally giving up on the series.
*Complimentary copy provided for an honest review.
Implausible tosh with a woman who is beyond stupid and a man who is an arrogant bully. When it turned into insta-lust sex-fest I gave up. Shallow, vapid characters. And why the hell did she let a total stranger, who had been so abusive to her, stay in her cottage? She had no internet, no phone..... idiot. Meh.
Jack Maclean has come to the Highlands determined to get answers from Stella Grant, —the woman who had an affair with his sister’s fiancé leaving her a wreck—and by extension, retrieve a signet ring, a family’s heirloom.
But when he finally meets Stella he’s unable to fight the attraction and soon they can’t deny the chemistry between them.
Novella is as a novella does. Too short, insta-lust that does surprisingly develop into clear to see love, however it was mostly tell. I get it, but I don't love it.
