To her home town, Mercy is a huge Hollywood movie star, and her mama talks her up to anyone who will listen. To her mama, Mercy is the perfect daughter. To Mercy herself? She's a washed up actress who's pushing 30 and broke as the joke her career in Hollywood has become.
Coming home with her tail between her legs was never in the plan, and after the small indie film she did that got great reviews, she'd really hoped that would be the role that garnered attention. But down to her last dollar, she's got to make some changes. Mercy immediately began looking for a job. She was up for anything, server, receptionist, didn't matter. But her mother's big talk, and everyone's memories of Mercy clouded the job market. No one wanted to give her a job if she was just going to run off to Hollywood at the next phone call from her agent. How could Mercy make everyone see she was staying for good?
Clay is the town veterinarian, and Dilly, his young daughter, is quite a handful. Luckily his in-laws love their granddaughter to death are thrilled to help out. But he'd never had the best relationship with them. He was the bad boy in high school, and they blame him for their daughter's choices. Janna was wild and didn't want the responsibility of being a mother. Clay did his best to settle down and provide a decent life for her, but she didn't want her party lifestyle to end. When Janna died in an accident, he relied more and more on his in-laws to help out with Dilly.
When he hears through the town grapevine that Mercy is back, slinking in at night at the bus depot, he knows he'll have to avoid her. But that's hard to do when she's his sister-in-law.
Mercy and Janna were like night and day. Where Mercy loved dance classes and pageants, Janna had hated them. With Dilly throwing a tantrum after every dance class, Mercy sees shades of her sister and tries to step in and help. Clay doesn't need her poking her nose in his business, and courtesy of Janna, Clay had some hefty preconceived notions of Mercy. But as he sees how she is with his daughter, and he sees she's serious about getting a job in Welcome, he notices something else. Nothing Janna had said about her added up to the woman he was getting to know. Clay began to realize that maybe Janna wasn't seeing her sister clearly. But Clay was.
I wasn't sure how I'd like this at first, knowing they were in-laws, but I loved Mercy and Clay together. I loved how they got to know each other, and I loved the whole family dynamic. I think that was the best part of this. Bonnie Edwards has a knack for writing realistic characters. The love story was believable and sweet. I enjoyed this book, and it left me with a smile on my face. In this character-driven small-town romance, Bonnie Edwards recreates the feel of a small town full of second chances and happy endings. A heart warming romance with lovable characters and a happy ending, what more could you want?

Finding Mercy by Bonnie Edwards is the first book in the "Return to Welcome" series. This is the story of Clay Foster and Mercy Talbot. Clay is a widower who was married to Mercy sister. Clay works as a local Veterinarian and along with working to raise his daughter Dilly. His mother in law helps him with Dilly but their relationship is very strained. Mercy was a famous actress who has returned to homed. Clay doesn't think Mercy will be around long. But things start to change and the family worked toward helping Dilly. This was a really sweet heartfelt book that you won't want to put down.
Mercy lost her sister two years ago, leaving a baby and an overwhelmed father. Filling the need, Mercy’s mother, Hope, stepped up to care for the baby.
The only problem with her ‘caring’ is that instead of letting the child be herself, Hope was trying to make her a carbon copy of Mercy. Only trouble was, The little girl, now three years old, hates her dance classes. Mercy tries to intervene and convince Clay that forcing his daughter in this matter is a bad idea.
But Hope insists that the pagentries continue. She had made Mercy sparkle, and she would do the same for Dilly.
Mercy’s sister had given Clay a bad opinion of Mercy. Over time he discovers how wrong his opinion is. In fact, he falls in in love with her, knowing all too well such a path would lead to disaster.
Clay is convinced Mercy will eventually return to Los Angeles and resume being an actress, leaving him and his daughter, both of which have fallen in love with Mercy, with broken hearts. Thus, he tries his hardest to stay away from her.
The emotions in this story are poignant and strong. And life gives them unexpected twists.
While at times you might be frustrated with their behaviors, the underlying love they both work so hard to ignore, will not be silenced.
Wow! This was more than I was expecting. Mercy, the perfect one who was meant to be a star, returns broke and homeless to her hometown, Welcome. She tries to get a job from people who have been told by her bragging mother that Mercy returned briefly while awaiting her agent's call. She has come home to her mother pushing her niece to become just like her; her brother-in-law trying to be a single widowed dad and live down the "Fosters" reputation; and finding out the truth behind her sister's accident/death.
Clay was her dead sister's husband that she was going to divorce before she died. Janna had been the rebellious child and adult, and Mercy was the "good child" and had been singlemindedly focused on her career to the exclusion of everything and everyone else. This gave some depth to the story as how Janna became Janna was unraveled. Also, Mercy gets a chance to step up when it comes to Dilly and challenge her mother on why Dilly is having tantrums around her.
Dilly, Mercy's niece and Janna's daughter, was teetering close to becoming as rebellious as Janna as Hope, her grandmother, pushed her to become like Mercy. Against that occurring, Mercy, Clay, Hope, and Nate had to look back and re-evaluate their part in how Janna turned out. In part, of course, it was on Janna ultimately, but by their self-reflection, they were able to see their part in it too. That is what blew me away with this story. Rarely is that level of introspection offered. And it made all the difference in all of their lives by being honest and grieving for where it all went wrong.
This story offered a blossoming romance with some sexy scenes between Clay and Mercy. Just enough description to keep it sexy and not explicit.
By the end of it, the story doesn't offer a black and white ending. It offered a more textured way for better relationships between Nate and Hope, Clay and his daughter, as well as Mercy making a very big decision about her future.
Then there were some side characters such as Logan, who I would love to see get a romance of his own, and Shandy, a single mother with the means but no real dating options, and Ellen, Clay's sister, who we do not get to meet but hear about a huge fight between Janna and her. I am already looking forward to book 2!
This is my first book by this author, but it won't be my last.
I absolutely loved it! Such a beautiful cover and love the characters names…
I absolutely loved sweet and tempered Dilly oh my heart! She really hates dance and classes so I don’t blame her for that one….Because I was like her exactly cause I’m into sporty kind of a girl..I can’t wait to read more book series soon..
I volunteered to review this book without any promises about the review (the rating or the posting).
This is the first book I’ve read by Bonnie Edwards and it certainly won’t be the last. This book was a very clean read (minus one steamy bedroom scene) which when it comes to a family-orientated book that directly involves children, I’m a sucker for. Bonnie’s writing is a breath of fresh air and completely wove me into the story. How much better can it get than that?
The following is my personal opinion and thoughts about many aspects of this book and its author.
COVER: ✯✯✯✯✯ - Anything with a child on the cover is a 5 star in my books. This cover is no exception. Plus the joyful feeling you get just makes the idea about the book more irresistible.
PLOT: ✯✯✯✯✯ - The plot was just enough to make the characters feel like a real family with real issues. An overprotective grandmother, a struggling father, a bouncy and growing child, a mediating aunt, and a grandfather muddling through to keep the peace for all involved. Just enough angst to keep you interested without everything falling over the cliff.
WRITING STYLE: ✯✯✯✯✯ - Bonnie’s writing style is exactly what I love. Descriptive details, lots of dialogue, and so much realism that my heart ache and soared through it all.
CHARACTERS: ✯✯✯✯✯ - So many characters...where to start.
Mercy (the main-main character) - She’s always felt like the golden child. But that golden child quickly sees what has been staring her in the face her whole life. She sees how her mother molded her and overprotected her. Mercy realizes that unless her mother’s “caring” attitude isn’t put under control fast, her niece will rebel just as Janna, Mercy’s sister, had prior to her death.
Clay (the main character) - Having lost Janna nearly two years prior and having a non-existent relationship with his family, Clay leans on his parent-in-laws for support and guidance to raise 3 year old Dilly. Clay is a very caring and compassionate soul whose shed his bad-boy ways when Dilly was born. She was his saving grace and he unknowingly struggles to find balance within the “adopted” family.
Hope (minor-main character) - Hope is the overprotective, needs to the world to see the perfect family type woman. She’s a little sassy and a lot intrusive. But there’s one issue. She doesn’t realize how she pushed one daughter away causing her to rebel while smothering another. Her reality shifts as she begins to realize how her “caring” nature towards her granddaughter is pushing Dilly down the rebellious path her mother, Janna, had gone down.
Dilly (minor-main character) - OMG...what a little sweetheart. Dilly is everything a 3 year old should be. Temperamental and loving all in one. Being a young child and not knowing how to explain things you aren’t happy with….imagine that being Dilly. She’s a bundle of cuteness that just made me swoon.
OVERALL FLOW: ✯✯✯✯✯ - This book was easy to read. The story stayed with me even when I was forced to put it down. I found my footing quickly and remembered what was happening when I able to dive back in.
I truly recommend this book to anyone who loves a slow and sexually charged romance. You could feel your love for Clay resonate in time with Mercy’s feelings. If there is a real Clay out there...ladies beware cause I do fight dirty.
Under no circumstances was I approached by the author to read or review this book. I offered without any agreement or promise for any compensation. I am voluntarily giving my opinion about this book. My only affiliation with the author is that I am a fan and want to support by reading and posting this review of my own free will.
Bonnie Edwards has written a book that drew me in from the beginning. Mercy has returned to Welcome, broke and broken. Janna, her sister, died in an accident two years ago, leaving her husband, Clay a single father to his daughter, Dilly. Janna’s mom, Hope has helped Clay out, but Mercy thinks Dilly would be better off not taking all the dance classes and going to beauty pageants. Mercy did those and loved it, Dilly not so much and she’s not afraid to show when she’s not happy. Mercy and Clay become closer, the closer Mercy and Dilly grow. When Hollywood calls, will Mercy leave as fast as she arrived? Grab your copy and get ready to fall in love with Welcome.
3.5 stars The town pageant queen comes home after a disastrous Hollywood spree. The town’s former bad boy, now single father and beloved vet. Oh, and he’s her dead sister’s husband. Interesting premise. Mercy’s mother is lovingly toxic. She wants Mercy’s fame way more than happiness. She failed to make a pageant queen out of her older daughter, who turned to booze and bad boys as revenge. Mercy is as down on her luck as a failed actress can be. But slowly, being home heals her. He heals her as does her father. And working with rescue dogs and answering phones for an old friend trying to break big in real estate. It’s a sweet story. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

In Finding Mercy the author touched in that pit bulls are not all killers as people receives them to be. It's how that are treated from birth just like people. Mercy and Clay had many obstacles to overcome for their love to work for their future together. Dilly was a sweet character for this book. An enjoyable read.
Clay was married to Mercy sister and now a widower. When Mercy comes home, broke, and not the famous actress as her mother talks about. Wanting to leave the town as soon as possible. Then again their is a niece Dilly that needs people to help in raising her..Three years old, and needs to be developing into her own self, not a image that Mercy’s mother wants her to become.
I enjoyed the story about a down and out failed actress who falls for her deceased sister's husband and his child. The author did a good job developing the characters and Jerry's emotions. It is a story about how her mother's parenting destroyed her sister, the wild child and was about to repeat the same mistake with her grandchild. I am glad it had a happy ending.
Dreams do not always come true. Mercy is disillusioned and broke as she moves back home. A lovely story line with characters that you will love This well written story will pull at the strings of your heart
Mercy has come from having a no go career in L.A. Clay is her brother in law, but they haven't seen each other since her sisters funeral. She needs to figure out what to do with her life, and deal with her over bearing mom. But also help her niece Dilly.
This book had surprising depth of character development. At first I just thought it was one dimensional with a failed actress coming home. But all the characters had their own stories and it was fascinating reading about how they interacted.
Mercy and Clay need to get along. Dilly, Clay’s daughter is Mercy’s niece. With Mercy back in town they need to do what’s best for Dilly. But there are sparks.
This is a story of second chances, owning up to failure, but not letting that failure define one's life. It's a story about starting over in a town where everyone knows everyone else's business. I enjoyed watching Mercy fight for her niece's right to choose and pursue her own interests in spite of what others expected of her. I enjoyed this book.
