Chicago Heat #2

Improper Conduct

Rate this book
Nick Novak is stunned when Isabel Grayson, daughter of an ambitious US Senator, seeks him out years after she’d broken his heart. Does she really think he’ll help her find her missing sister just because he’s doing a documentary on runaways? Trying to deny his feelings for her, Nick tries to get rid of Isabel, first telling her she must hit the streets with him and live like the homeless kids do. When Isabel agrees, Nick goes a step further and tells her she must keep him warm at night. Still in love with him, Isabel assumes he’s serious and provokes hot and heavy encounters neither will forget. To Nick’s shock, Isabel will do anything to save her little sister... and someone will do anything to get rid of both sisters. For good.

Excerpt:
Isabel Grayson... well, if just seeing her name didn’t give him a hard on.
Having taken up residence in Helen’s Cybercafé, trendily painted in crackled pale yellow with overstuffed sofa and chairs near a fireplace, Nick Novak was sitting at one of the computers imbedded straight into a glass table lined up against a wall. He needed his internet fix along with his morning coffee. His high-end laptop had crashed a couple of months before, and he still hadn’t replaced it because he always found a better use for the money.
He fingered the socialite’s calling card, admired the rich texture of the stock and the simple elegance of the design. Both reflected Isabel herself, he thought, tamping down his initial physical reaction and flicking the card straight into the nearest waste container.
“What? You’re really not going to get in touch with her?” demanded owner Helen Rhodes, a blond knockout and formerly a baby corporate webmistress in another life.
“Nope.”
Narrowing her green gaze on him made the small mole at the corner of her right eye all but disappear. “Aren’t you curious about what she wants?”
Nick thought about it for a moment and lied. “Nope.”
“But it must be important. She’s called every day that you’ve been gone.”
He’d been gone for more than a week this time. So Isabel was persistent in addition to being elegant, smart and a bitch on wheels.
What he said was, “I’m just not interested in the problems of a poor little rich girl.”
“Go on, get out of here, before I do something really radical like revoke your caffeine and internet privileges forever.”
He exited the café, which faced the six-corner intersection where Bucktown and Wicker Park met in an eclectic fusion of mindsets. Nick rushed up the flight of stairs to his business and home.
But he wasn’t alone on the staircase. A woman was coming down toward him. One with luscious long legs, a graceful demeanor and a familiar if more lovely face than he even remembered. She had the same good bone structure, the same flawless skin, the same perfect features, but at the moment, the delicate flesh around her luminous blue eyes was drawn and tight, making her seem decidedly unhappy.
Nick’s smile faded.
Isabel Grayson had shattered him emotionally once.
What the hell made her think he was going to give her a chance to do so again?

This is the second book in the Chicago Heat series and thank god it can be read as a stand alone because I had not read the first book in the series. For me this was an average book which had its both ups and downs. It is the typical story of a rich girl and poor boy who fall in love and the parents and money come in between their relationship. It was my first time reading a book by Patricia Rosemoor and I found myself sometimes getting confused with the triple point of view writing style, which was a big downfall for me. The characters were kind of cliche and at many points in the book I found myself disliking Isabel's character because she was stuffy and judgmental. I liked Nick's character because he wanted to help those in need because he understood their circumstances. The chemistry and sex scenes were steaming hot and were well written. Overall there is nothing special about the book, its just a cliche love story from a different angle.

The rich daughter of a Chicago politician runs to her first love to help her find her runaway sister. He cons her into having sex with him, not that she’s at all reluctant. In addition to that he makes her live the life of the homeless people she’s encountering—well, he cheats a bit—rather than go right out and find the sister, who’s in danger. He’s a bit of an ass, but then she’s no prize either. By the end they understand each other better, show they regret the times they acted like jerks, and come together. . . and oh yeah, remember about the sister in danger.
This was kinda bland. Can’t think of much to say about it. Actually a good story frame for the silly romance, but they spent so much time denying their feelings I got exasperated.
