A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.
Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.
Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.
Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.
Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.
Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.
He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.
After a couple lesser Marvel omnibi i decided to read one i know i would love. Brian Michael Bendis is great, and will forever be one of the best Marvel writers out there. His DD run is one of my most praised books, but also his Spider-Man is great and his new Avengers stuff. He always shoot on multible cilinders with kickass action, but also can excell with slower moments and dialogue. He always has huge casts and its so cool to see him handle, Daredevil, spidey, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Man i would have loved a Luke Cage comic from Bendis, he knows this characters so well. Secret Invasion might be the biggest event he has ever done, mixing stuff from House of M and Civil War! And making this unique story about a pretty obscure alien race from the Fantastic Four. Somehow The Skrulls are everywhere and when the New Avengers are on a mission and hunting down Elektra and accidentally kill her, finding out she was a Skrull all along ! Everybody is scared as hell, nobody could sense that their was a Skrull along them... The story then goes back to The fantastic Illuminati, a group combined of all the leaders of the different groups, and something they did years and years ago. Many things happen, Nick Fury is suddenly back, Cap is back after being shot in Civil War ! And the shit hits the fan all over, and somehow Bendis makes this work so well. It also works to have one of the most stellar artists in the bizz working with him because Leinil Francis Yu works wonders here and i was amazed with all these big splash pages of action. I read one complain about this run that this only collects Bendis his stuff and not the 100s of tie ins. But i am so happy that they kept it like this ! If i want to read more of the side stories i will look for them, i like my omnis centered on the main story to keep momentum and Bendis who worked 4 years on this story knocks it out of the park. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I’ve had this omnibus for about 2 years and was waiting for the perfect moment to crack it open. So, with the hyped upcoming tv series based on this storyline, I thought what better time than to finally check it out. ‘Secret Invasion’ is the Marvel event lead by writer Brian Michael Bendis in which he writes the story of Earth being filled with Skrulls and our mightiest heroes being none the wiser. It starts in the pages of ‘New Avengers’ when the team finds themselves battling Elektra, who is the new leader of ‘The Hand’ (a deadly ninja clan). They’re also there to save Echo who is under some sort of control. After they snap her out of it, she rushes Elektra and kills her. The team is shocked when they see the corpse of who they thought was Elektra, is actually a Skrull. How long has this Skrull been leading ‘The Hand’? Why couldn’t Wolverine smell her out, or Spider-Man get a spider sense about it? Most importantly though, who else is a Skrull and who can be trusted. The team is split on what to do with the corpse but Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) decides to go against the team's wishes and take it to Tony Stark. Stark calls in the Illuminati (A secret team compiled of; Iron man, Charles Xavier, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Namor, and Mr. Fantastic) to get their thoughts as they have experience with the Skrull empire. They all come to the conclusion that this means war and everyone should be looking over their shoulder cause there’s no way of knowing who’s a Skrull and who’s not.
As mentioned the main creator spearheading this project was Brian Michael Bendis and as much I like Bendis as a writer, this didn’t hit as hard as I thought it would. I think the premise is super intriguing and the start of it all was real “edge of your seat” kinda storytelling, but as the story went on I just felt meh about it. The twists and turns were cool and shocking, but there’s too much you need to already know for this storyline to be at its most enjoyable. That’s the problem with this era Marvel, and unfortunately no matter how great of a writer you get, if you can’t execute a great story on its own cause you want so many ties involved then you shouldn’t market it like it can be a starting point. There are some exceptions to this era of Marvel, where almost every season there was a blockbuster event, but alas ‘Secret Invasion’ is not one of them. It also doesn’t help that this omnibus in particular isn’t mapped for the best reading order. You get a chunk of ‘New Avenger’ and ‘Mighty Avengers’ in here, but the order in which they tell the story is sorta whack. It doesn’t necessarily make the reading worse but an improved mapping of the omnibus would probably have made it more enjoyable.
One for sure win for this read however is the great talent of artists on this series with Leinil Francis Yu being the main artist for the main event series. You get some awesome stuff though from; Mark Bagley, Jim Cheung, Billy Tan, Alex Maleev, David Mack, John Romita Jr, and many many more.
Overall; I didn’t hate this read but I was hoping for a bit more. I’d say the main series is alright with the additional Avenger issues making it a bit more fleshed out, but it suffers from the era of Marvel where if you weren’t reading every event and every tie in, somethings get lost and the overall enjoyment gets tainted. This omnibus is also not the best mapped and it might be better to read this even digitally with a suggested reading order from online.
This omnibus has Brian Michael Bendis' Secret Invasion output. That means that you get the main story, a few Illuminati books, and a chunk of two Avengers titles. While this is more than enough to get the complete Secret Invasion story, you will have to go elsewhere for the issues for The Fantastic Four, Captain Marvel, Nova, She-Hulk, Deadpool, etc.
While most of the modern Marvel events of the mid to late 2000s (starting from Avengers Disassembled) are fairly tight, I find that here we start getting events that are far too bloated. Even clocking in at less than half of the entire event (which, if you read everything, spans more than 120 different issues), there is just too much going on here and so much that could have been cut without hurting the story. In fact, most of the issues in this volume are simply flashbacks. For an event that devolves into heroes and villains punching each other in the face in a huge battle (as they do), this is just too much set up.
As an aside, I also don't like what Bendis did with Mighty Avengers and thought bubbles. He was trying something new by showing us the internal monologue of everyone, but it ends up just being thought bubbles everywhere that are mostly dumb jokes that only serve to add twice as much dialogue to books that are already pretty dialogue heavy.
Unless you are specifically interested in the books in this volume, I would suggest simply reading the prologue and main event, and just picking up the event books for anyone else you are interested in.
I enjoyed re-reading this event as i have fond memories of getting back into comics with Civil War and picking up this event as the issues were coming out. Even after all the years and context, the story can be tough to follow and is not new user friendly to jump into.
The omnibus gives you the full event and also incldues the new avengers and might avengers tie ins as well as two of the Illuminati issues. Some may question the layout of this book as the tie ins end up being flash backs that provide additional context to the event. Some issues cover what is happening in the event from a different point of view. I enjoy Bendis as a writer but feel his voice has never fit well with team books as all the characters end up sounding very similarly. This bleeds over into his event work especially when it is on a large scale like this. Still, this is worth a read if your interested in the big Marvel event books or are interested in what happened in the marvel universe at a large scale post civil war.
The extras include the variant covers and interviews with Bendis and some of the artists.
I find it really hard to enjoy most omnibus event books without reading all the related issues and titles.
I also want to appreciate all the planning and hard work of a writer by reading their entire runs.
I don’t think I would have enjoyed the Secret Invasion Omni w/o starting with Disassembled and reading House of M and Civil War because you can go back and see all the foreshadowing.
Secret Invasion weaves together so many events and creates one large tapestry of paranoia. I’m definitely glad they didn’t reveal too many Skrull which would have cheapened the surprises. Definitely loved how we saw the Skrull’s plan being set up because we get to see how certain events were not all as they seemed.
Spider-Woman’s setup, the Return of Nick Fury, and creation of Secret Warriors were great.
The setup for Osborne being the new Stark is awesome and can’t wait to get into Dark Avengers.

5:39 PM 9/6/2019 Impressive collection of the lengthy Bendis story event as the Skrulls attack! Skrulls' plans to takeover the earth come to fruition as a variety of heroes have to try to see through the paranoia and disguise. This was a sprawling collection/event from the late 2000s I just now got to, catching up on my event OHCs and omnis. I was impressed by the overall consistency and quality of the story and the art. Spine and durability of the omni was well done too having been on the shelf for a couple of years. Recommended. (j4.)
Ever since Captain Marvel the MCU has been teasing something with the Skrulls.
A Secret Invasion tv show is in the works and I hope they do take some off this Marvel event into consideration.
Bendis' Guardians didn't do it for me, but Secret Invasion is a very fun read with high stakes and lots of plot twists. I loved Spider-Woman and do hope she'll be able to get a major role in the Marvel Universe soon.
I always thought the Skrulls hung out in a kind of dumb corner of the Marvel Universe. They are short and obsessive and seem more like bad ex boyfriends than an actual threat to anything. Secret Invasion totally changed that for me. The same way Bendis turned the Purple Man from a joke to a terrifying menace he found the paranoia that runs through Invasion of the Body Snatchers and most good spy stories and infused them into this surprisingly good comic event.
I owned the Secret Invasion book before this. It was good but there were so many questions. This completes the story with a prologue main story and epilogue. This one of the best books Marvel has ever put out.
I also felt like SI had so much potential, instead it casts Skrulls as a blanket villain and has a muddled motivation for the whole arc. Throw in a whole bunch of shaky continuity things and I just end up feeling disappointed.
My favorite 2000s Marvel Event so far. I liked this a lot more than Secret War, House of M and Civil War. I liked it so much I read all the tie-ins, which I don’t always do for events.
The basic premise is that Skrulls, a shapeshifting alien race, are invading Earth. Skrulls are a longtime staple of Marvel lore, they were in the famous Kree/Skrull War, and the Fantastic Four have had several encounters with different Skrulls over the years. What sets this event apart are the timing and scope of the invasion.
There’s a common thread of breaking down institutions in the Marvel universe throughout the early 2000s. Starting with Avengers Disassembled and working through Secret War, House of M, Civil War and now Secret Invasion, each event has disastrous consequences and leave a piece of the world in chaos. SHIELD is gone, our heroes don’t trust each other, the Mutant population has been decimated, and now there’s aliens among us. It’s very tense and very effective.
I can’t help but see the inspiration from the Red Scare that went through America throughout the Cold War. It could also be inspired by the feeling that terrorists were among us, remember that 9/11 was only six or seven years earlier.
The writing is probably the weakest link here. Bendis is Bendis, and if you hate his style this won’t change your mind. It’s still got the call-and-response exchanges, several characters sound and talk the same, which is often like teenagers. There’s also some humor that doesn’t work at all.
Art wise it’s solid. Leinil Francis Yu does most of the main event, and of course the different tie-ins are done by their respective artists.
After reading New Avengers, Mighty Avengers and Initiative leadup, i felt like I had some better context and this made more sense. Very enjoyable, although I wasn’t in love with the story. Bendis’s amazing character writing is so good that I can forgive that.
******First read******
Intense, man!
There’s so much good... let me knock the bad stuff out really quick;
This omnibus is huge, and annoyingly, out of sequence. The main story ends about halfway through, and then the second half is all tie in issues. It doesn’t ruin anything, but it would have been nicer to read the whole thing in order. The tie ins range from ok to great. Mostly really good. In order would be better. Ok. Great.
That’s it for bad!
This story rocks. It’s so suspenseful and nerve racking. You never know who the skrulls are until it’s too late. Every time it’s revealed, there’s a major “oh shit!” moment where you’re like “noooooo!!!”
In many ways, this adds a whole new level of narrative significance to Civil War. It was always about the invasion!
The two most emotional character arcs involve Luke Cage/Jessica Jones and Hank Pym/Janet Van Dyne. I didn’t cry... but I felt it. It was poignant.
The Skrulls are so goddam evil! They make outstanding villains. The violence in this story is a cut above your typical marvel fare. Lot’s of deaths. Lot’s of heroes losing their nerve and getting brutal. I love it.
Anyone would enjoy this story. Yes, it draws from recent events in other arcs, but it’s easy to read between the lines and figure out. I think this is one of the great marvel stories.
