Elephant and Piggie strike again in this wonderful tale that Neo thoroughly enjoyed reading alongside me. With the sun shining, Gerald and Piggie venture outside to play. However, soon the sun disappears and the rain comes down, first a trickle but soon a downpour. Soaked and less than impressed, Piggie announces that she’s no longer keen on playing outside. Gerald comes to the rescue as they bemoan Mother Nature’s intervention of their play time. It is only after watching others enjoy the rain that Gerald and Piggie see that the rain can be fun. Mother Nature no longer controls their happiness or playtime, rain or shine! Neo and I sped through this book, reading as the clouds pushed across the sky and the rain began to fall. Funny, he looked out and wondered if we might play in the rain. Talk about a book having a lasting impression on young minds.
Ja no jubenunnud pildid. Eriti need, kus Notsu mossitab.
Another wonderful Willems book that kept both my 5 yr old and twin 3 yr olds fascinated. Not enough words to be even a reading level 1 book, Willems still has a way about him to bring the reader into his wonderful world. These books are ones my whole family loves. And a fellow friend on GR recently told me that the pigeon was hidden in each book and we now love to look for him too! But we couldn't find him in this one! :( If anyone knows where it is or if it's not there, let me know! Fun for all and a great addition to any children's library!
Adorable easy to read book about two friends-Gerald the Elephant and Piggie the Pig and their planned day of fun. Simple language and color coded text boxes help distinguish the two and their wants and needs..Piggie is a hyper little guy who wants to go outside with his friend and run, skip and jump but all his big dreams are thwarted by a smattering of rain. Oh Piggie does not like rain, he yells and pouts and almost gives up his hopes for a day of fun, negatively wondering if anyone could enjoy the day when he and Gerald spot a pair of worms wriggling excitedly for the rain. Loveable optimist Elephant surmises that if the worms can have have fun they can and his energy is contagious infecting Piggie with a new attitude and a newfound LOVE for rain!! The two end up stomping happily in puddles until ha- the rain stops just as soon as it started and Piggie again laments they can’t have fun outside unless they have rain. Again Gerald saves the day and comes up with the ingenious plan of spraying Piggie with water from his trunk simulating rain for puddle jumping! Such a selfless act to make sure his friend got to play even if he didn't, Gerald just looked happy making sure Piggie was happy what a guy-way to go Gerald....Super cute book about best friends, finding the positive in life and working together…another fun read aloud by Mo Willems –a staple in a children’s library as his books and illustrations just make readers smile 😊

Are You Ready to Play Outside begins with two friends excited to play together outside. It begins to rain, which makes Piggie sad because he does not think they can play in the rain. Gerald shows Piggie that they can have fun together no matter what the weather is like!
A. This book is an Easy-to- Read book because it uses very simple words that young readers could easily recognize and understand. Piggie and Elephant have word bubbles near their mouth that clearly indicate who is speaking. The exaggerated facial expressions and actions of the characters will also help young readers interpret the emotions taking place in the story. B. There are only four colors used throughout the book. This adds to the simplicity of the aesthetic of the book. The characters look like they were sketched with pencil, which adds to the playful nature of the story. C. I would use this book with children to help them practice their beginning to read skills. This is book is simple and enjoyable. I believe it could help them develop a love for reading.
The combination of illustrations and text make these books so funny - without the pictures you would miss half the greatness of these stories. Piggie and Gerald (the elephant) and going to play outside! Nothing can stop them. Except when it starts raining. And Piggie HATES the rain. He's miserable. Until he learns to love it. Then he's cranky when the sun comes out again. But Gerald has a solution for that too! A lovely story for newly independent readers about friendship, feelings, and problem solving. Also good for predictive text.
5yo: This book is awesome and exciting. I love these books, especially if Gerald is helping Piggy. This is one of the best book series I've ever read. I love it! The part where they have rain falling on their head is especially exciting. I love rain. 😁
10yo: 5 stars. Gerald and Piggie books are interesting. Normally one of them has a problem and the other one helps.
Mom: I've thoroughly enjoyed adding Gerald and Piggie books to our repertoire. They're quick, but fun, reads and make an easy "yes" for story time.
So cute and funny! I am really enjoying these books, which my 5-year-old is reading to me. They all give little ones a positive message about not sweating the small stuff, and to look at the opportunity and fun that exists in everything regardless of the seemingly gloomy predicament.
Genre: Picture Book Awards: Geisel Award Winner Audience: 4-8 years old This book is great for children learning how to read because it has large, simple text and minimal illustrations. It tells the story of two friends with different personalities wanting to play outside, but the rain may ruin their play date. This book is categorized as an Easy-to-read book because it emphasizes the text over anything else. The simple illustrations add to the meaning of the text. This book is appropriate for all readers, especially those that are learning how to read.
Julianna read me this book tonight. She gives it 5 stars. Super cute book. Funny & cute friendship book. Julianna read it again tonight & we enjoyed it.
Amidst the slew of awards announced last week, I was thrilled to see Mo Willems' Are You Ready to Play Outside? named the Geisel Award winner (given for the most distinguished book for early readers.) One of a series of books featuring Elephant and Piggie, these books are TRUE beginning readers. And they are TRULY distinguished.
Every element of the books works to facilitate understanding by a new reader: the pictures, the text, the font size, the font color. The simplicity of Willems' drawings is so deceptive; they are doing so much! The plain background gives emphasis to the text and the two main characters (occasionally another joins, and if so, is given their own color). Gerald the elephant naturally is gray, and Piggie pink. When they speak, the background of their text boxes is the respective matching color.
The text is appropriately sparse, and the font size varies according to the emotional import of the story. When Piggie is sad, the text is small; when she is mad, it is large and then even larger. The uncluttered layout, varying typefaces, and oh so expressive faces of Elephant and Piggie make it easy for a young reader to decipher their emotions and even to read with expression.
And if this wasn't enough, the story is funny, engaging, warm and something almost all children can relate to -- wanting to play outside (yea!), then a rainstorm (oh no!), loving to splash in puddles (yeah!), then sunshine (oh no!). My first grader loves to read these books to his younger brother, and both usually end up rolling around with laughter! Some are a bit more absurd (There's a Bird on Your Head!) in their sense of humor, others more universal (I Love My New Toy!), others delightfully quirky (I Will Surprise My Friend) but all are so full of child appeal. May Elephant and Piggie's friendship be long-lived!
2009 Theodore Seuss Geisel Award I confess, Mo Willem's Pigeon is one of my favorite characters in children's literature, second only to Dr. Seuss' Horton. And yet, this is my first acquaintance with Elephant & Piggie. The Theodore Seuss Geisel award criteria, like other ALA awards, expect the winner to be 'distinguished,' which is further defined as a 'significant achievement,' 'excellent in quality. displaying 'conspicuous eminence,' and 'individually distinct.' It is ironic that so many multisyllabic adjectives are used to describe a beginning reader. And yet, this book deserves them all. New readers will benefit from the text balloons that separate the words from the pictures, the few words per page, the frequent repetition of words, and the uncluttered space, either white or rain-spattered, as demanded by the plot. The illustrations clearly demonstrate the story being told, thus acting as comprehension clues for beginning readers. In fact, the expressions on Piggie's face are so evocative of his emotions and drawn so simply with a few black lines, that the book is a perfect blend of text and illustration for a young reader. I love this book! Like a 2nd grader, I now want to read all the other Elephant and Piggie books. I also wonder what my old friend Pigeon is doing peering out of the back endpapers? What a great question to pose to kids for their next creative writing exercise.
When I saw the new Elephant and Piggie easy reader on our department's cart of new books, I think I actually squealed. The new entry will not disappoint fans of the series. In this outing, Piggie and Gerald are all pumped up to start playing outside, but a rainstorm appears to threaten their fun. Once again Willems somehow crams so much expression onto his character's very simple faces with Piggie carrying much of the dialogue this time. While there aren't as many laugh out loud moments in this story as in some of the other Elephant and Piggie readers, the sweetness of the story and the possiblities for acting it out make up for that fact. I can just see a room full of preschool children running, skipping and jumping with Piggie or you could put Are You Ready to Play Outside? with Rain Play by Cynthia Cotton and The Rain Stomper by Addie Boswell for a rain themed storytime. I can't wait to see what will be next for Elephant and Piggie.
I love the Elephant and Piggie series! Willems does a fabulous job telling humorous stories about the unlikely friendship between an elephant and a pig who do silly things, and most often get a little confused :) In this book, Elephant and Piggie are just so excited about playing outside, until the unfortunate event of a rainstorm. The friends are so upset because they HATE the rain. However, as the story goes on, the two friends discover the rain can be fun to play in! Just as soon as they find fun in playing in puddles and splashing around, the rain stops, and they are once again, dissatisfied with the weather. Elephant cheers up Piggy when he makes water blow out of his elephant trunk--his act shows great friendship because he makes Piggy happy. Young students will love this hilarious book about friendship with somebody who is different than you, but can help you out in times of need. I hope to own every book in this series :)
