Tampa Two marks the return of Judy Atkin, the teenage runaway who P.I. Burnside arrested a decade earlier for prostitution. He made an enormous mistake by trying to help her, and wound up losing his job as an LAPD officer, along with his honor and reputation. Judy was the catalyst that led him down the path of becoming a Private Investigator, and all the good and bad that came with it.
But Judy is back in L.A. again, and is desperate for Burnside’s help. Her life is in danger, and she tries to persuade Burnside to accompany her into a dangerous situation. While Burnside isn’t fooled this time, she still manages to rope him in, and he quickly finds himself to be a person of interest in a grizzly Santa Monica homicide.
Tampa Two continues to showcase Burnside at his wise-cracking best, exchanging quips with an assortment of fascinating characters, no matter what side of the law they are on. This well-crafted novel is the embodiment of the classic Southern California noir mystery, set against a Los Angeles backdrop, a city that many think they know, but few really do. The story leads readers down a trail of theft, murder and deceit, with sharply honed banter and strikingly original characters.

P.I. Burnside is ex-coach, ex-LAPD officer. Ten years ago he tried to help underage prostitute Judy is back, wanting his help. Ends up being the suspect of the murder she was involved. If you like football and read and liked the first book, you might want to read this. Only thing interested me was learning the three different meanings and usage of Tampa Two.
Loved the characters, the L.A. scene, the hamburger haunts, the breezy, easy writing. Football, murders, call girls, cops and P. I.s. Great book! Thanks!
The protagonist is an ex-football coach, ex-cop who is a PI in the LosAngeles area. He is brought in to a murder case because his business card is found near the dead body in an apartment used by prostitutes. He works on his own to investigate the murder (and another case of possible spousal infidelity) and comes across a colorful cast of characters and miscreants. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-Galley for an honest review.
I read this out of sequence in the series and was pleased to be provided with the back history in an enjoyable way that didn't pull me away from the current story. The book is well written, the characters are believable and you can get behind them. The story comes to a satisfying conclusion and thankfully, not a cliffhanger ploy to get you to the next book. You will want to read the next one though, because you'll enjoy this author and these characters.
Santa Monica, CA. Judy Atkin (27, prostitute) had gotten P.I. Burnside (USC; FB) kicked off the LAPD force. Now she needed his help. It seems there is a video of her/Walter Anawak (Eskimo, LA Rams, Washington Huskies LT). Her pimp Owen Magid was blackmailing her wanting $20 G’s to not release this disc. P.I. Burnside told Judy no several times.
$1,500 @ day. Done deal P.I. Burnside was hired. Deputy Chief Barney Sack called P.I. Burnside & told him to get over to an Ocean Vista Condo building; 1440 6th St. #612 ASAP.
Office Callaway (SMPD) said the deceased is Henry Knapp (club security). It seems Judy knew him also. P.I. Burnside was doing his own investigation. P.I. Burnside was on his 1st day of stake out on Madison. It was time for him to pay Owen a visit. Rolf Anawak’s (Alaskan, cousin, freight mover) body had been found in the alley behind a King’s Head pub shot in the head twice. Surprise, surprise. Quentin called P.I. Burnside. Same scenario, someone wanted $50’G’s from him. P.I. Burnside is Quentin employee also. Candy Pence (prostitute), & Tommy Lyman (pimp) were charged with murder, conspiracy, & blackmail.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written PI thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great PI thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Despite some good choices regarding not getting involved with Judy Atkin, and not pursuing a person who tried to harm his family, Burnside still got sucked into Judy’s situation. How he resolved that took more brainwork and footwork and less belligerence than in his past, though that part of him is still close to the surface. Gail has helped him moderate that beast, but it’s fatherhood that has really made him stop and think about consequences.
PI Burnside, has a visit from Judy, trouble was still her name, and wants help. Curious, has always gotten to him, and so he listened. You need a body guard, not me. A call, a murder and victim had his card, so Burnside is now a person of interest. A new client looks just like the dead guy, so now they are trying to blackmail him. Can Burnside figure it out. Sit back and enjoy the easy dialog as only he can put the pieces together. With the added touches of his family, friends, and football, this is a readers delight.
Interesting plot involving a PI who investigates these areas in his work. Why he has sympathy for a prostitute who got him kicked of the police force makes you wonder. But the reader will be satisfied that justice is served when Burnside is on the job.
I've read 5 or 6 novels in this series over the years, and I've always enjoyed them. Burnside, a modern-day Spenser, wise-cracking but good-hearted. Unfortunately this one just didn't work for me. It felt a little forced and uninteresting. Even as I write this, I know I'll read more of the series ;)
I’m not sure about Chill’s Burnside. He has had a lot of careers for his age. This reads like he’s mostly interested in football and being a PI is just a side job. But then the two start to overlap and he’s in his sweet spot. Given his apparent intelligence, his propensity for knocking people around is flawed.
Judy Adkins, the person responsible for Burnside leaving the police force, is back. She wants him to be her bodyguard while she makes a delivery. Burnside tells her "No" and the person she does hire ends up dead, with Burnside's card next to him. This makes him suspect #1. Judy is eventually arrested for it, but Burnside doesn't think she is guilty, either. He is going to find out.
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a “light” read. The author has a good sense of humor which enhanced the book. The disgraced cop now PI is a very familiar story. This was a free book on kindle. No, I do not plan to read any more books in this series. Many readers gave it high marks.
A new author and a new character to enjoy! A reformed former cop who lost his job after being accused unfairly is now a PI and gets pulled into a complicated sting gone bad!! This one will keep you guessing till the end.
Very entertaining storyline about a former cop turned private detective and his adventure and misadventures as he solves crimes and tries to maintain a normal family life.
I always enjoy this smart mouthed private investigator. He is getting much better at keeping his smart aleck comments from slipping out of his mouth, but he still shares them with the reader by thinking them. Great series!
The commendable fact that this story had no blasphemous references would had gained it 5 stars. However, I am not a fan of American football (I'm a Scot!) and was totally bored by the references to it - and the seemingly full account of a game at the end.
Ex cop, ex football coach and now a PI, what a storyline. Very interesting real characters that were brought to life by David. The twists and turns from the very beginning made it interesting. Thanks for the entertaining read.
The strategy is to minimize your exposure to a loss it always doesn't work. In this case no good deed goes unpunished. Here the good deed resulted in complications in the life of the detective.
I really like the main character. Burnside is smart, creative, good character, and William to help others. Not all cases are solved, but Burnside stayed with the facts and solved the murder of two men.
I ENJOYED REMINDED ME OF SOME OF THE OLD DETECTIVES LIKE SAM SPADE OR SPENCER FOR HIRE TYPES. I LIKED THE CASESHE WORKED ON THEY WERE REALLY TWISTED LIE CHINA TOWN. I DID HAVE A BIT OF TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING SOME OF THE FOOTBALL TALK BUT WAS HAPPY IT EXPLAINED SO EVEN I COULD UNDERSTAND IT. ;D
Good P.I. crime solving story that includes several cases. Easy to read as a stand a lone story as adequate background info is provided to bring you up to speed. 4 stars
I have just read 8 books in this series. All well written and gripping in their own way. At no time did I not want to finish any of them - and there is always a twist.
