Remi Devereaux is a Louisiana born detective working murder cases in Louisville, Kentucky. While shopping for game-day with the guys, he spots the most amazing person he has ever seen. Peter is a man Remi wants with his whole being, a man he just can't let go.
Peter Romanoff is a photographer who possesses the spirit of two creatures. Two beings that are slowly tearing him apart. He needs a Supruga, a mate, to help give him balance. When he meets Remi, there is a magnetic pull he can't deny.
The next in line to lead a powerful coven, Peter is hunted, and the people he knows and loves are being killed. It will take Remi's love and Peter's skills to combat the enemy after them. Can Remi be the balance Peter needs before the coven destroys them both?
This book was a difficult one to read. Not just because of the wincing tropes, tropes both offensive and tired, but the writing. First, the book needed much better editing; it seemed as if it was mostly done by spell check. If you’re not careful, you end up with homophone issues, such as “reigns” instead of “reins,” or just odd word choices, such as having someone gain a “foot hole” instead of a “foothold,” or a character slowing their breathing “conscientiously” rather than “consciously.” My ‘favorite’ was when a murder victim was described as “decimated.” Technically those last two one could work, but… it makes me wince, regardless. Each time one of these issues popped up it jerked me out of the book, and it happened often enough. Not to mention one phrase that made me wonder about Peter’s anatomy. While getting hot and heavy with Remi, he felt his dick ‘unfurl.’ I’m imagining a wind sock. It’s not a sexy image.
Broken Pieces also contains my two most loathed tropes in romance novels: Stalking is cute! and GayFor You. Remi isn’t and hasn’t been gay — not to his knowledge — but one glimpse of Peter’s magic ass has him trailing after the man like a dog in heat, quite literally “storming through a grocery store” as he chases Peter into the parking lot. Finding out that gender isn’t as important as you thought it was is one thing. Being turned gay or straight just because the right person came along doesn’t work for me.
I loved this farcical bit of unreality. Luuuurrved it. It was over the top. It was an over the top paranormal romance mate situation. Did I say it was over the top? Well, it was. There were some beastly aspects of this that were just kind of ... skeery. Yep.
The author walked a fine line between gross and titillating, I'll be honest, but it somehow worked. And probably because the deceptively delicate MC, Peter, was really a beastly fucking badass while alpha cop and intuitive spiritualist Remi was just as badass from the bottom. What's not to love.
Still, it was over the top and completely unrealistic, even for a paranormal. That's not necessarily a bad thing here. I think the plot needed that "feel". It had kind of an opera-ish vibe to it if you know what I mean. The pacing was a little fast, even for something like this with a mate angle and let's face it, the whole first 'real' time they did anything together was ... scary as fuck but inexplicably hot. I'm a little worried what that says about me to be honest, but screw it.
Read it and see what I mean. Like I said, there are aspects of this book that walk a knife's edge with at least one pretty hard pass taboo, but somehow it works. It certainly gives a whole new meaning to the words: fearless acceptance. I'd like to see more of this world and find out what Peter and Remi face in the future and what they're capable of with their bond.

Remy, a detective. Peter, wolf/a different kind of vampire. He needed a mate to fulfill the needs of both parts of him.
A different kind of fated mates story. I liked the aspect of having 2 entities inside Peter. Both unable to shift without someone to balance them out. Remy was more than human I think. The story was sort of insta love, and when they finally got together it was very surprising. Peter being a different sort of vampire was also interesting.
I am so disappointed in this book. I wouldn’t normally spend $5 on a new to me author and a book with zero Amazon reviews, but this book got a good review on Boy Meets Boy blog and sounded good so I went for it. The first couple of chapters were badly written. It jumps around and is way too descriptive of random items and not characters you actually want descriptions of. I had to make myself keep reading for the first 60-70%. The last 30% was actually not too bad. Overall not well written but I see potential in the author. Could use a really good editor and some beta readers.
Loses marks for lack of proper proofreading/editing, along with some of the issues already mentioned by other reviewers, nevertheless it's not bad and I was able to finish it. The potential is there but it needs more polishing to be worthy of another star.
So, I picked up this book and was really intrigued by the blurb. I mean, it sounds sexy and dangerous and paranormal, I mean…this is right up my alley. I do so love me some good paranormal stories. I have to say that this story, when it finally kicked in…Blew me away…I had dreams about this book the night I finished.
While reading this book I was caught by so much…I mean, it seems that Remi does ALL the chasing in this story. I do mean ALL. However, I liked that for a guy who always dated women to see this man and decide…That is someone I NEED to know. I NEED to be with. He just felt it and he went with his feelings. No hesitation at all…just he’s someone I need and that’s all there was to it. Remi who grew up listening to his grandmother’s words (she was the parish priestess) and being able to believe in what she spoke of…that helps him greatly in not only his job, but in what he’s about to face in being with Peter.
Peter…yeah, it took me a bit to get into his character. I knew that he had some stuff going on in his life…but he came across a bit cold for me at first. It was only after really getting to know him a bit better and understanding what his situation is…then I got a way better understanding of who and what he is. Peter’s life hasn’t been an easy life and fighting the battles that he has fought and continues to fight…yeah…I got the reasons why he is the way he is. I couldn’t imagine having to have this on-going battle inside your body for control and knowing what your future is supposed to entail. Peter is actually a really good guy who is trying his hardest to live a good life, one that is protected and yet, one that allows him to be free. Such an interesting character…I enjoyed watching him throughout the book change into who he is meant to become.
The side characters, Caleb and Kaden…Peter and Remi’s right-hand’s respectively…these guys are good guys. They would follow them into whatever comes and truly have their backs. I have to say that I really loved the way that Kaden just accepted Remi and his need to be with Peter. Didn’t really question it at all and just went along with it. That kind of unconditional love, friendship and respect…that was really just amazing to me. Caleb…now Caleb has some issues with humans that wasn’t fully revealed, yet, I have a feeling that it will be. I really appreciated the position that Caleb is in. He is Peter’s Second and has his back and yet, he’s also a wolf that has people that even he needs to report to. These two men, for me were some of the very best secondary characters that I’ve ever seen. I have to say that they weren’t the only characters around, but these are the two that were there the most and really gave the most to the story.
The mystery/suspense was actually given away early-ish in the story…however, even though we the reader knew what was happening and Peter had an inkling of why this was happening…Remi and Kaden did not and the way that these two men work together as a team was really great to see. To know that these people died to get Peter’s attention…that was hard to really bear and yet, the bad guys in this story…Holy Hannah, Batman…they are bad and the leader of the bad guys…Power-Hungry and Crazy. I normally can get down and understand a bad guy…but this B*tch is CRAZY. There were no redeeming qualities about her.
Now, I will admit that this book was a slow burn and I wondered how they would get there or if they even would, as Deja is a new to me author…I have to say that when these two men got together and allowed their passion to rein free…HAWT DAMN!!! I thought my poor sweet Kindle would go up in flames. Very tastefully done and you could see how it brought our MC’s closer together. The sexy times wasn’t gratuitous at all.
This was a really wonderful book and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more from Deja Black. If you’d like a story that is slow burn, with a good solid romance and some good action…this is the book for you.

4.5 Stars! Detective Remi Devereaux is finally getting his footing here in Louisville, Kentucky after leaving Louisiana and his family behind. He never expects his world to be turned upside down by a beautiful blonde he spots in the grocery store, especially since that blonde happens to also be a man. But for some reason, gender doesn’t seem to be of any concern to him because every part of him says this man is the one.
Unfortunately, getting to know Peter Romanoff isn't as easy as Remi would’ve hoped. The watchdog/bodyguard aka best friend Caleb seems to thwart Remi whenever he can. Demi’s not sure what’s going on and he won’t let anything stop him from pursuing Peter. Even a sick and twisted killer who may be killing people who’ve had intimate relationships with Peter.
Remi has no clue that a beautiful photographer like Peter is struggling to control the two beasts trapped within him. Or that Peter’s future is to lead his late father’s large and powerful coven. Peter is definitely going to need Remi.
What I Loved: I am a huge fan of Paranormal books so I was super excited to check this one out after I saw the amazingly beautiful cover and I read the blurb. Of course, it also helped that I have become a fan of Deja Black’s stories. I’m glad I had this opportunity because the story didn’t disappoint.
Broken Pieces was very well written and intriguing. It possessed humor, suspense, action and some pretty sexy between the sheets action. I thought Peter and Remi had incredible chemistry and a great connection and thought they worked well together. I’m hoping to see more of them in the future.
I also loved Reno’s partner and best friend Kaden. He brought the comic relief to the story and had me smiling more than once. I loved the relationship he had with Remi and enjoyed their banter.
What I Liked: I honestly liked the way we saw the crimes and investigation through Remi’s eyes. It added an element of creepiness to it all. It fit with the idea that while the paranormal world doesn’t reveal itself to human, humans still find themselves in the middle of it without ever knowing it.
What I Didn’t Like: So I am probably going to be part of the minority but I found myself lost or confused a few times. The world we are shown is detailed and well thought out, but it is sometimes almost too much. I found myself having trouble following the fact that there’s a Coven, a Coven leader and all the things that have to deal with that. Then, there’s the Pack and the Pack Leader. It all became a jumbled mess in my brain in the beginning.
There’s also the matter of Kaden and Caleb. While I loved Kaden and didn’t care for Caleb, I repeatedly confused the two.
Overall, I’d say that this is a really great read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading paranormal stories with magical elements.

Tigger warning there is some scenes of torture. This first book of the series is a little confusing in places. There is a prequel story called Broken Bones which in my opinion should be read before reading this book to gain some background knowledge to the world and a few of the characters that will be recurring throughout the series.
Peter is a hybrid, part Wolf and part Nelapsi, one that needs his mate for balance. Remi is that mate, the detective is on the hunt for a murderer with ties to Peter. They have a slow burning romance with some obstacles, I did find it a little slow going with most of the action taking place in the last 20% of the book. I did however find this to be an enjoyable read overall.
I kinda liked this book, I kinda didn’t. Parts of it were confusing, and it seemed like there was another book that I was supposed to have read prior to this, but it’s book one? I REALLY didn’t like the weird dream sequence at the end of Remi and Peter’s first night together because it made it seem like possibly one of Peter’s beasties raped Remi? But then the next morning he seemed fine so I’m not sure what happened there. It just overall felt a little disjointed and like some parts were too drawn out.

I felt like I was missing something, rather than this being the first book of the series.
So Remi meets Peter, one look and insta love, throw in werewolve, scarier vampires, sandmen, and all kinds of fey and we the basis of this story.
While I was cheering these two on, at times I felt frustrated. Remi is aware there is more than human. He is aware that someone/something is after Peter, yet he still goes on a public date with him. Then later when he knows the truth and that he is Peters balance, he goes out without backup
I absolutely LOVED IT!!!!! It was amazing, action packed, suspencefull and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved every single character and I can not wait to see what happens next. I love the fact that Remi accepted every part of Peter and through everything that happened is still standing by Peter's side and supporting him. I love that they got their HEA. The intimacy between them was HOT & SEXY. Deja Black well done on an amazing book.
Peter is unique among the supernatural with the dual personalities within him. Remi grew up in Louisiana but moved to find a new place for himself. As these two cross paths, it is a lot more complicated than simply meeting a cute guy.
This world is absolutely fascinating and will pull you in within no time. I would recommend to read Broken Bones first but it's not required to understand the story. It just gives you a little glimpse into this world.
He is a detective and he is planning a party with the guys when he spots them. He is blown away by what he sees and he wants them so much. They have two spirit creatures inside of his body and they know they need to find a mate before he is turn apart by them. Will they get together? How will they work it out? Can it work out? See how it all goes
I really loved this book. Peter and Remi were just made for each other. The story line was well thought out and the characters just evolved as the book went on. It was a wonderful love story with a bit of action and steam to boot. I am looking forward to the next book and see who the next lucky couple is.
Broken Pieces follws the story of Remi and Peter. The book is an mm paranormal romance with a bit of mystery suspense. Overall it was an ok read, but needs some attention at times to make it a better read. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A really great use of a detective character and a fated mate in a paranormal story. Remi and Peter have an amazing, instant connection and the idea of Peter needing Remi emotionally/physically for balance and for protection from the coven was a really interesting plot device.
Strong premise, lovely cover. This book had me hooked. It started out good, but soon lost it's appeal. First of all, there were quite a few editing mistakes, i.e. homophones and odd words. Then, while the MCs were pining for each other, they had dates, sex and more sex, but we didn't learn a lot more about the case and Peter didn't really tell Remi things about himself. Remi had to figure everything out in a moment of need without people explaining to him, while it was almost too late. He wasn't afraid or overly surprised and this was described through the fact that is grandmother was a voodoo priestess. That felt rather weak to me, especially since the supernatural in Remi's life was mentioned in passing in the beginning and then it wasn't explored any further until this point, even though things pointed in that direction several times. The ending was a bit stronger again, but not strong enough for me to give the book more than two stars.
